Next year's coach?

Fike no, I want an offensive coach. No more d-coordinators
This is key to me. If you find the right offensive mind you could be set for a decade. If you get a defensive coach and then get a good OC he's gone. Traditionally, I'd prefer a Defensive HC but the game has changed.

I believe you're correct, DEI got him the interview, his ability to talk and talk and talk got him the job.
I'm not getting into any of that bullshit. It has no purpose. When Cowher got in the HOF.....Tomlin became a lock. And we can all spin his success 15 ways. Fact is he will be a HOF coach who has been a great ambassador of this franchise. But his time should have been done when Ben was done. If not before.

Good post man.
Mike Tomlin is like a loved relative or good friend from out of town that came to visit for a vacation or the holiday, and overstayed his welcome because he couldn’t read the tea leaves, and the host allowed him to stay rather than jeopardize a long time relationship and risk being seen as an ungrateful friend or relative.

Good grief, man!
You sound like my financial advisor!
He always hits me with that line.
Boring! 😑
I’m a bit of a risk taker myself
Yeah but you aren't the Rooneys.

You’re absolutely correct, sir.
I was not born fortunate enough that my grandfather won a fledging professional football team with his gambling winnings
However, I did achieve the American dream that my grandfather wanted for me when he came to this country from Italy with nothing but a couple suitcases and a few lira in his pocket.
For which I am very grateful to this wonderful nation all my grandparents decided to come to.
Legally and proper of course

I always think of a good friend of mine, ugly mother- ****** who could talk and talk and talk. He always got any woman he tried for back in the day. Id always ask wTF man….how do you do it? He’d laugh his *** off and go….bull-**** baffles brains every time.

Mike Tomlin could teach a masterclass of bull****ing.

I wouldn't say just because Cowher got in, Tomlin was a lock. Cowher won playoff games with 5 different QB's, I wonder how many, if any other Coaches have done that. Coached teams with two different QB's to a Super Bowl, 3 different QB's in conference title games.

how many playoff games did Marvin Tomlin win with a HOF QB?

IF and that’s a big IF, there is a regime change because that’s what it is, It’s a regime change not a coaching change in Pittsburgh.
From the college ranks, of course I would love the young man from Notre Dame to move his family to Pittsburgh and become the next head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, but I might have a better chance of winning mega millions tonight.
in the college ranks I would look at Mike Elko and Brett Key.
Both men have outstanding old school leadership characteristics and a proven record of turning around poorly run programs, which is what we’re living through right now.

That is the spin I was talking about. You and I both know he is in. It's a lead pipe lock.

Love Freeman. Great leader of men and fixes problems. But he is a defensive guy and they need an x and o attention to detail guy from offense. But happy Marcus has brought back winning to our college team Dino.

Hmmm. I thought you were a fellow Canuck / Hoser. Guess I was wrong.

Assuming the unassumable, and Mike is gone, maybe gamble on a young guy like Brian Hartline. Although I think he could’ve on PSUs list as they don’t seem to be in a hurry.

Lol
Pittsburgh born and bred.
However, I did live in North Central Ohio up on Lake Erie for 20 years.
The winters up there felt like I was a Canadian.
I also made many trips to Montreal on business as part of a project team to move manufacturing equipment from a Johnson & Johnson plant to a Playtex facility here in Delaware back in the day.

Do those things count to be considered an honorary Canuck?

Good enough for me. As the kids say "My Bad"

Does anyone remember Tomlin’s contract situation was like in Ben's sunset years. To me that was the logical breakpoint. Someone else should have led the rebuild and they'd be 4 years in, min. Now, statistically it's going to be another 3-5 when Shades is gone.

Tomlin signed a 3-year extension in April of 2021. Roethlisberger retired after the season.

That was the biggest mistake and the team did not initially plan to bring Ben back. They knew he was pretty much cooked. They should have told them both their time in the burgh was over.

Ben's retirement game has been the most exciting moment for the Steelers since 2021. I'm glad he came back for one more year.

Ok lets see... from several angles:

I dont like bringing college coaches in to the pros... they have an insane catastrophic fail rate, but if you had to, Id look at Marcus Freeman from Notre Dame.
He has traits you'd think would translate far better than most.

As for Pro coaches

The retread:
Kliff Kingsbury, current Washington OC, Ex Arizona coach... offebsive whiz, good with QB development. Only 46

The pittsburgh connection retread
Mike McCarthy- he is 62. He wont be coaching for more than 8-10 years tops.... most likely like five.. the only way he gets hired is if you need a guy to find abd develop your next franchise QB and you dont trust a younger guy available

The ex Steeler:
How about Antwaan Randel El... assistant head coach in Chicago and Art Rooney2 favorite?

The hot offensive coordinator - Joe Brady from the Bills... he will almost certainly get a gig this year

The too young OC
29 year old Declan Doyle. People think he is going to be a star soon

The cowheresque defensive coordinator -
Anthony campanile DC Jags

The Defensive guy with too many icky Harbaugh connections
Jesse Minter DC chargers

The Pedigree guy
Klint Kubiak. His dad was an impactful coach in the NFL, who's blocking schemes changed the way run games worked...

The in house option:

The combo Special: Brian Flores... probably the strongest candidate... ex Steelers coach, only 44, has previous coaching experience, a defensive guy like the Rooneys like..,

Im sure there are more... Thats just from the stuff i looked at earlier this season, lol
I really like Randle El as an offensive coordinator. Let him earn his stripes there. I’m not feeling Joe Brady but I can see it.
I really like Kelvin Sheppard DC of the Lions. There is just something about him and watching that defense. He has Bill Cowher energy and he seems to feed off of Dan Campbell.

I'm one who is saying he was a DEI hire and I pointed out the perceived benefits of hiring him. And, he wasn't an awful hire. But they could have done better.

If you recall, the coaching choices were:
  • Mike Tomlin
  • Ron Rivera
  • Ken Whisenhunt
Tomlin checked the black box, Rivera checked the hispanic box and Wiz was the white dude. Thus, the Rooney Rule specs were met. Rivera and Wiz went on to become head coaches, so its not like Tomlin was head and shoulders above the other two. Yet, at the time it was almost a given that Wiz would be ruled out due to the Rooney Rule, and despite being a part of the Cowher coaching tree, was a token interview.

I don’t know why people are offended by this. Did the Rooney Rule force them to hire Tomlin? Of course not. If they hired the white guy four years after the Rooney Rule was implemented, would it have been a bad look and would they have been lambasted as hypocrites by the media?

Of course.

Look at those three and Russ Grimm. None of them did **** really as head coaches. That was a weak crop for the job to begin with. If it's a close call, the best interview gets the job. That's just my opinion, but he's been here a long *** time for being given the job based on something as intangible as that nonsense. I'm not a Tomlin fan myself, but I can see the difference between a young guy who had a great interview getting a chance and hiring some retread or a guy with just as little experience who didn't have that interview.

We all know there are folks who are what they are when it comes to the race conversation. You are not one of those, to be clear. But when some of them comment, it's embarrassingly clear. That's who I was specifically addressing. It's time for Mike Tomlin to move on, I just hope there's someone like Ben Johnson .out there after the season who can coach offense. You won't win without it in this league
