What to do with Jarvis Jones if (by some miracle) he does not start.

You don't think Williams could start for another team? Shazier? Timmons? And Spence is a damned good back up who just might develop into starter material ... heck, he performed as a part-time starter for this team last year. As for Wheaton and Bryant, I think we tend to undervalue the talent of WRs not named Brown. Beyond that, Coates could develop into, if not something special, a very good starting WR; as could Rogers and Goodwin. As a matter of fact, Goodwin and Rogers may have a hard time making the team even though by all accounts they are having good to great camps.

The statement that you made did not mention "starters" initially ... it mentioned an abundance of talent. And we do have that at ILB and WR.

I guess the good thing is with a healthy Harrison, Jones won't have to be THE guy and put even more pressure on himself. He will know going in that he is going to split time. Hopefully, he will be able to excel in that role and then take over full time next year. At least, we can hope it works out that way.

So we have to wait for 4 years to get our #1 pick who played in the 3-4 in college and was 24 when drafted to be ready to start, LMFAO, he is a bust any way you cut it.

Wow, I'm out of it for a little while and there are to my eternal surprise --- another thread about Jarvis Jones. Damn, I thought that horse in the Godfather was dead.

At least there was a thread complaining about the CB the team acquired for a 5th round pick. Amazing -- anywhere else in the world fans would be thankful a team acquired a veteran to play CB (with a solid track record) and this site is about to blow up with how bad a trade it was and how bad a pick the 2nd rounder was.

The more things change.....

shazier can't even start here , the only good ones are timmons and deebo , others are average or bust...moats and villiams maybe are little above average .. we have quantity

No it did not mention starters. Also I am not sure Spence is starter material yet but is a good back up as is Williams and who might be a starter on some teams. My point is and it does not look like I was clear about this we do not have so many that we are going to have to release someone that is likely to start somewhere else. We have room for our players we are not overloaded with talent at the position so that we will need to release a good player for someone else to grab. Sorry I was not clear enough. I do see your point that there is talent and good depth at some positions and that it is likely the steelers will not be hurting for players in some areas.

The Steelers are overloaded with players at LB. They are not overloaded with talent.

Some of the reports I've read on Jarvis Jones are that he seems to be struggling against 2nd and 3rd stringers on the O-line which for a #1 draft pick in his third year is discouraging. For every negative comment on Jones in training camp I have read many positives about him in camp also. I'm on the fence with him and have been since he was drafted. When it comes to a guy like Chickillo he sounds like he's doing all the right things for a rookie. Kinda reminds me of Josh Mauro from last season one of the final cuts of last seasons roster and ultimately he was scooped up by the Cardinals and I actually saw him start a couple of games last season is Arizona and he held his own out there. That was a tough pill to swallow last season to see a kid with talent like Mauro goto another NFL team and not only play but start several games and play very well. I hope that doesn't happen with Chickillo this season. Preseason is his chance to shine....lets hope he can make an impact.

Coach should be limited to creating one thread per week.
How many times have I said this???

Coach, I think FoxNews may have an opening for you on their crack news team.
I just woke up my wife. Going to sleep in the guest room...

Well many here think he's good, so if they are correct he's worth a lot more than a 5th round pick. I think a 5th round pick is about right. He's tradable because he does not have a big cap number.

I think Moats is ahead of him, and the rookies have flashed better talent.

By the way the title of the thread has not been answered. Jones is not a lock to start.

Coach, Moats doesn't play on the same side as Jarvis. Your reports are, as usual, based on speculation and thin air...

Today's edition of The Newspaper Whose Name We Dare Not Speak says that Coach Porter has high hopes for Jones this year. It also quotes Coach Porter as telling Jones, "You’re going to read the articles, they’re not all going to be good because you haven’t done anything to make them say anything great about you.”

James Harrison plays on the same side a Jarvis Jones. Harrison is the better player vs the run or the pass, and has leadership. Are you telling me if both are healthy Harrison is on the bench and Jones starts? Come on Bermuda, I could use a laugh.

That sums up JJ right there "you haven’t done anything to make them say anything great about you" I also think that is why many of us are down on jj as a football player. This is year 4 and he has not flashed anything that those of us that do not like the pick shows he will be something. By comparison Timmons showed some ability as did Woodley by this time in his career. It would be nice if he finally turns out to be a good player but if we use this mold no one needs to show they belong till sometime in year 4?

100% correct. How much upside J. Jones has is debatable. To his credit he looks stronger. In the past he has the arms of a DB. But he'll never be fast, big, or that strong. I think he's close to maxed out, and rookies are impressing more than Jones did in his first camp.

Jones pro day was awful. He worked out like a rookie free agent. His short shuttle time was awful. ( 4.71 ).

Jones didn't help his NFL draft stock, though, after running a muddy 4.92-second 40-yard dash in chilly conditions, The Associated Press reported Thursday. Among the linebackers who ran at the combine, only Virginia Tech's Bruce Taylor was slower. Jones' 20 bench-press reps would have tied for 16th.

This below link sums it up best: Jones is 2nd to last among Steeler drafted linebackers...below Alonzo Jackson and Bruce Davis!

Believe this is his 3rd year.

This is year 3, but yeah.

Believe this is his 3rd year.

Might be but it seems longer.

Here is an article on recent measurables and numbers regarding a bunch of picks the steelers made at OLB some of which did not last very long at all. Now if JJ can over come this type of thing and become a play maker that would be a major accomplishment. It is a real uphill battle for him and at the rate he seems to be going he is likely to be older and slower before it happens.

Joey Porter: No more patience for Jarvis Jones

“The first year was the first year, you don’t judge that,” Porter said. “The second year I thought you started off pretty good. You had two sacks in the first three games and then you got hurt. So they’ll be patient with you then. But please believe they’re counting on you to have a big year this year, they are. You’re going to get scrutinized, I’m going to get scrutinized. I’m going to help you the best I can to play at a high level. You put in the work to prepare yourself to play at a high level, and we’ll go from there.”

Jones says he feels comfortable and “playing a whole lot faster” as he prepares for his third season. As Porter says, that will need to translate to the field or the Steelers will have to start looking elsewhere for a building block of future defenses.

You gotta love Peezy as a player and a coach he wasn't/isn't one to sugar coat anything.

I am down on Jones, too. Have been since they drafted him.

But judging him play by play at practice is stupid. The article in the paper had a line in about Jack Lambert not looking good in drills at practice. It's bullshit where they give you a play by play in practice. Imagine for a moment if we had a play by play at work every day. I wonder how good we would look all the time.

Let's say on a play someone observes him he is trying something a little different to see how it will work. Kinda like pitchers do during spring training outings. Maybe it doesn't work real well, and now it is written Jarvis got beat by a tackle. I refuse to read it. We'll see when games come.

At the beginning of the season, this is exactly what I think happens. If both are healthy, Jones starts. Harrison relieves during the game and his snaps are limited. The coaches have said as much.

If Jones is playing average, I think it stays that way, at least, through the middle of the season. If Jones is playing <gasp> above average <gasp> it stays that way all season.

If Jones is playing below average and showing no improvement during the season, Harrison moves up to start, unless Dupree is showing quite a bit on the left side where they could move Moats back to the right and still keep Harrison's snaps limited. They want to keep Harrison fresh in case we make the playoffs and he could still be on fresh legs.

They would say "Good Lord, how does he stay on Facebook and a Steelers board all day?"
