Can a defensive player win the Heisman Again? Coolie Pimps Ed Oliver

Aaron Donald is 6’1 and 285.
Geno Atkins is 6’1 and 293
Sheldon Richardson is 6’2 and 294
Sheldon Rankins is 6’1 and 299

Those are some pretty good guys who are the same general size as Oliver.

With all the quick passing, lots of teams are looking for the quick DT that can get pressure up the middle. Gruden knows how disruptive Sapp was as a 1 gap shooter. He could love what Oliver brings.

When was the last time Arizona won the Pac 12? Tell us! The Outland Trophy ( which Oliver has little chance of winning in 2018 ) does not equate to automatic success at the pro level.

To think the title of this thread was can Oliver win the Heisman? LOL, that looks pretty foolish right now, wouldn't you say?

I predict you will be moving the goalposts backward saying, yeah but Oliver missed games, and not do the same for the rest of the field when I point out Oliver's lack of productively vs the pass.

Stop twist words, and keep your poise if possible. When Oliver's will play again? That knee is still causing him issues.

Hot damn. That's gonna leave a mark.

Sort of like the Heisman. You can draw between comparisons, but it doesn’t mean one iota of anything in regards to the differences between college ball and pro ball. Until there is a appropriate level of material to review at the pro level, there isn’t anything to compare.

“For once I have a point”? You mean, again, you’ve been shown you don’t know what you are talking about.

I was a subscriber to Steelers Digest for 20 years, but I’m not going to go through all those back issues to see if you “assured” us. Why don’t you identify which issue, date, volume and number indicates this.

All you really have to do is look at documented works from Kiper and Bushbaum at that time, in addition to Beano Cook who had inside connections to Notre Dame. He was ESPN’s college football patriarch when he was there at that time.

I agree with you on the Heisman point, As I mentioned earlier winning the Lombardi trophy does not guarantee success. Coolie went defensive. So you are agreeing with me at a later point.

Steeler Digest was quality, and a necessity for me pre-internet. If you have the issues just after Zorich was drafted, look for it. The editor, Bob Labriola, who's perhaps the best Steelers writer ( and also knows Dan Rooney ) but just mediocre in terms of knowing football went defensive, saying he believed the players the Steelers drafted would be better NFL players than Zorich..something close to that.

So Ike, check it out, and you might be shocked on my recall. I used to keep the draft issues. On Zorich, I thought he was hyped and over rated. Not a fit for our 3-4 either. I was correct. There were sports illustrated articles on Zorich, I recall him using manholes for weights.

But back to business. If Oliver is 6'1 280 pounds with shorter than average arms ( My observation on the Arms ) and not a pass rusher, what type of success do you think he will have in the NFL? Tell us, Ike. Go out on a limb for once if you can.

I do not think he going to shed Guards and Center's like he's doing in college

Hot damn. That's gonna leave a mark.

I judge the mark by the desperation of the reply, and the inability to debunk what I'm saying. Film does not lie.

film doesn't...you do

I've already debunked 99% of your bullshit. From the way your "analyse" plays, to the success of Outland Trophy winners but just keep on patting yourself of the back.....

I think winning the Lombardi trophy exemplifies success. So again, you don’t know what you are talking about.

Coolie hasn’t been on the defensive, he’s been trying to focus on the whole point of the thread and your bet. Will Oliver win the Heisman or be picked within the first ten selections of next years draft.

Coolie is smart enough to know the Heisman vote isn’t set up for anyone not on the offense and rarely will a Defensive player win it. Just to mentioned as a candidate is a accomplishment in itself

You are the one explaining why you don’t think he will drafted in the top 10 (or in the first round with your “evaluation” of him), yet all the experts seem to think Oliver will be drafted before #10. There are at least 5 DL in the top ten rankings by prognosticators right now. So it’s actually you on the defensive and not Coolie.

On the record, I’m DISAGREEING with you. I think Oliver will be another Aaron Donald type player. Same measurables, but stronger. In fact I think Coolie will go two for two on your musings and that he may actually win the Outland again, which you guaranteed he wouldn’t.

Dear Lord you are clueless. First you said the Steeler Boards, which didn’t exist, would detail your example about Zurich, but yet you now say Digest was your “necessity pre-internet” for football. You are refuting what you said was your rationale for your comparison in the first place.

You peacock your “recall” on Digest stories but won’t validate it. You rather leave someone else to do it for you. Your are just speaking BS like you do and try to orchestrate your statements as fact when they are every bit as BS. “I was correct”....LOL, sure I bet you were in your infantile mind.

BTW, Labriola has been with the Steelers organization for a long time. He is the Steeler writer and not an independent. He’s been the editor for Steeler Digest for a while as well. So of course he “knew” Mr Rooney, he knew Myron Cope and Chaz too. He also been around pretty much every senior administration in the organization for over 20 years. So don’t act you are giving us new information. Just more deflection from the subject.

You’ve made your statements ad nauseam about Oliver. You don’t have to repeat it over and over. It’s your opinion. I respect it. I also think you are wrong, like with most everything else you proclaim without objective analysis.

Give it a rest. You are going on vacation. You know it, everyone on this board knows it. We will just wait for your BS excuses as to why he he shouldn’t have been chosen so high by such and such team.

First off, Oliver DID NOT win the Lombardi. Get it right Ike, it was the Outland. A sample of the past Outland winners since 2000. Only a few of these guys were pro bowl players. We had one. Kirs Farris. How did he work out :)

Wrong. Coolie thought Oliver had a chance at the Heisman, Ike. He doesn't get it!

Oliver another Aaron Donald, you say? My ***. ROLMAO, Donald has two 11 sacks seasons in college Ike. Oliver never had more than 5.5 sacks, and vs weaker competition I might add. By the way for as good as Donald was, he want 13th overall. And I thought he would be a good player. He showed in in the college all star games.

Its not Zurich, its Zorich, and if you research you will see I was correct. Thanks for the bio on Labriola, I'm familiar with him.

And finally Ike, why don't you research how many DT's actually went in the top 10 the past few years of the draft and get back to me. Deal? Quick preview, I'm right saying most of the years recently do not have a DT in the top ten. Now take a look and see.

Ta-ta, and keep those shades clean!

wrong again....as I've stated several times...this is my very first comment in this thread

not likely....but two national guys wrote stories about my guy Ed Oliver....the second one below is more about how he was raised....

This is a kid to watch play next season.....

this thread was started to pimp Oliver as a guy to watch this season.

Here is what I previously posted about the Outland Trophy winners

As for the Outland Trophy...it goes mainly to OL players, but going back to 2000 there have been 5 other defensive players win it...Aaron Donald, Ndamukong Suh, Glenn Dorsey, Rien Long and John Henderson...

Suh and Donald have been exceptional. Henderson and Dorsey both had solid careers and Long was out of the league in 3 years..so it would seem (at least since 2000) that 4 out of 5 defensive winners of the Outland Trophy do well in the NFL.

so since 2000 12 OL have won the Outland Trophy. 2 are too new to judge (both injured Robinson & Garnett) so that leaves 10. Robert Gallery won it but was a bust at left tackle although he was okay at left guard, so a push on him. 4 didn't make it 4 years in the league. Of the remaining 5, three had careers over 10 years as starters. One started every game for 6 years before he got injured (Jammal Brown). the other won (Scherff) just a few years ago and and started every game as a pro for 4 years so I would count that as success.

so 5 out of 10 OL who have won the Outland Trophy since 2000 and 4 out of 5 defensive players who won have been successful in the NFL. That is a bit better than 1 out of 3.

for the record, I think Oliver has missed too much time to repeat as the winner of the Outland Trophy

Look at your second sentence on the first quote. You said Lombardi you moron. I corrected you that Oliver won the Outland.

Blame auto correct for listing the German city. Wish I could for your idiotic ramblings.

I actually did that already you simpleton, probably right here in this thread. Why don’t you go through it yourself. My lazy obtuse friend.

Your own post shows Suh and Donald in the list. Lol....you give us so much joy in your ridiculous BS. During your absence write a book about how your lack of coherent thoughts causes you to be a laugh fest for the masses.

Coach, I believe in the first 10 posts of this thread that Coolie mentioned Oliver's heismans hopes as 'tongue in cheek'. Though he wouldn't mind if it happened. Though it won't this year because of his injury, unfortunately.

Even after missing multiple games, Oliver is still considered one of the best in the game

The reigning @outlandtrophy winner, the #HTownTakeover's @Edoliver_11 named a semifinalist for the award in 2018!

What was Coach A’s rationale for tell him to remove it? Looked like a Houston Cougars Outerwear. There were other guys wearing black coats too. Weird.

Coolie, Ed pulling a Bosa in preparation for going pro? Doesn’t seem that’s his modus operandi.

after watching the clip, it seems more Applewhite with some kinda control issues. It's a Houston cougar jacket. Its ticky tak and stupid.

Those are the coats that fit over your shoulder pads. Oliver wasn't playing, so Appleweit didn't want him wearing one.

It may seem like a petty move from a head coach, but most schools only have a small number of these coats (no more than 20), and if that is the case, I can see why the coach wanted that coat available for players. I was just on the sideline this Saturday for the JMU RIU game in Harrisonburg, and that was defintely the case on the URI side of the field. The game temperatures were around 25 degrees, wind was up, and there weren't enough coats to go around for the sideline players.

Oliver won't take off his jacket. While I agree this is silly, breaking a team rule and not returning to the sideline won't help his draft status.

Coolie, who's side are you taking, the coach and program rules or #10's?

Oliver may have gotten more upset by the fact that Applewhite pushed the coat down off of his shoulders while telling him he wasn't supposed to be wearing it. Oliver shouldn't have had the jacket on, but Applewhite could have handled telling him that better. There wasn't a need to start pushing the coat off of Oliver while talking to him. Tell the man to take it off and let him do it himself. McShay called into the announcers and talked about how he didn't think he would have pushed the issue with a kid like Oliver who has done so much for the university and thinks the game film of Oliver will still be more important than those few seconds on the sideline come draft day

Reports are Oliver possibly could have played but is playing it extremely safe with his knee and doesn't want to be on the field until he is 100%. He told the sideline reporter before the game that he was definitely playing next week against Memphis. Hopefully that is true.
