Call it here, do you see Ben Roethlisberger returning to Steelers next year

With Fichtner gone does Ben want to start with a new OC?

Watt has no remaining signing bonus counting against his fifth year, his cap hit next year is all base salary. Yes any signing bonus of a new deal will hit next season, but I think they can just take his salary and turn that into bonus money so basically he'll play next season for what the final year of his rookie contract was going to pay him.
That could be way off though, LOL.

i think we are saying the same thing.

I just looked Watt's monies on Over the Cap. No SB bonuses to speak of and 10M in base sal. Yes, they could take that 10M and give it to him as a bonus and then spread that across the term of the new deal - Say 5 years. that is what they have been doing with a lot of vets (Ben included). This is a basic restructure. In this case, that would take this years salary, turn it into a bonus that hits the books for 2M each year for the next 5. However, he will also get a big bonus to do the deal. Lets stick with an easy to work with 25M. That also goes across each of the years at 5M per year. So we are now at 2m + 5m each year or 7M. He will still get roster bonuses and salary layered on top of that as well. In short, restructuring him like this along with is big payday (which he deserves) is going to take him over a 10m hit in 21.

He's hinted big time he wants to play.

I'm not a cap expert but I say if they can do it they give him a 1-2 year contract extension to spread out the cap hit and he comes back at least 1 more year

I can't imagine retiring after playing a year in empty stadiums.

If the Steelers cut Ben Roethlisberger, would anyone sign him as a starter?

he will back most of the time he changed plays once teams saw he was going to just release after 2.3 secs that entire dallas game we only won because of ben, Canada was smart oc at the college level I am sure if he doesn't go to south beach he will be great OC with us

We need to find a QB asap.. Just retire, for the good of the team.

He's just being selfish if he wants to play again.

Anyone remember how threatened or perhaps insulted he felt when they drafted Mason? That's the impression I got back then anyway.
.
“Well, that’s fine. He can do that. But I plan on playing three to five more years, depending on how the line goes and staying healthy, if I can stay healthy.”

”If he’s going to be their guy, that’s great, but in my perfect world it’s not going to be for a while.”

Those two quotes (courtesy of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) came from Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, when he was asked last week about the team’s decision to select Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft..

He even ran to Mikey:

”I went and talked to Art and Coach [Mike Tomlin] and coach Randy [Fichtner] and basically said, listen, I can’t control--barring major injuries, barring things at home, and things out of your control--the way my body feels. The way our O-line is put together, as good as they are, they kept me healthy as can be the last couple of years. I really feel I can play this game another three to five years.”

Yes. He has one more year left on his contract. Then he will retire.

He'll probably see how things go during free agency and the draft and make his call in May/June. I think he'll be back.

Yes. One more year.

Do I think he should come back? No. There is no point.

He can't wait that long, he has a pretty sizable roster bonus in March I believe

Yup. They will have to have a sit-down and heart to heart prior to that. Ben and the Steelers have about 6 to 8 weeks to decide. I don't think they force him out though. He may have had some bad moments this year but he also showed he can still sling it with the best of them. If he stays, they have to give him a dummy 1 to 2-year contract like they've done in the past that will reduce his cap hit this year and make it easier to part ways afterward. My gut says he stays for another year but he will have to do what I said in another post and start exercising and eating right starting in about 2 weeks. He can't afford to take a couple months off like he normally does. He has to be in the best shape of his career to come back.

They need to get the Oline fixed, that will solve alot of problems on offense, they have to hit on an Olineman and RB in rounds 1 and 2. Tomlin needs to just let Butler run the defense, to many good players there to play a conservative style, if that's how he's going to call the defense, especially in big games, there was no point getting Minkah, let that guy make plays like in 2019 when Ben was hurt and Tomlin said, "I call the defense differently when Ben doesnt play"

If the Steelers cut Ben Roethlisberger, would anyone sign him as a starter?

Someone definitely would. Based on our offensive scheme, I'd still take Ben over Jackson, Ryan, Brees, Prescott, Cousins, Wentz, Carr, Stafford, Jimmy G, Rivers, Goff, Mayfield, Murray, Newton, Alex Smith, Tua, Bridgewater, Daniel Jones, Trubisky, Drew Lock.

Ben is still at worst a top 15 QB, I'd say top 10 or 12.

I think Bens plan all along was to get on with his life's work after this season..

But I don't believe he envisioned it would happen after a playoff loss to the Cleveland Browns...

and frankly, I don't want to see the Browns "retire" him either,,

One more year! One more year! One more year!

And they will be right here and they will be right here.

Look it isn't Ben. Ben could play at a championship level, though it is fair to question whether he could. But this isn't a championship level team, with a championship level coaching staff. Move on move forward and hopefully it forces the ownership to realize that Tomlin needs to be fired so this franchise can get to where they should be in 4-6 years. Wake the **** up people.

Ben will be back can’t leave that kind of coin on the table... hell hed scub the toilets and wash the towels if need be... he’s coming back but *** I wish he’d lose about 50 lbs! He comes in every year big beer gut guy “oh man i worked out sooo hard this off season!!! His gut’s so big he can’t get under center! Then by the end of the year he’s noodle arm guy that can’t throw twenty yards down field. COME ON BEN!!!

what in the holy ******* hell are you babbling about?? Ben hasn't had a "gut" in like, 3 or 4 years, einstein.

Ben is coming back until he hangs them up

Next year could be messy. Can you imagine if they hire one of these "new fangled" OCs who wants to use crazy ideas like motion and play action? What's Ben's response going to be to that? "OK, Coach, whatever you say" or "Get out of here with that. I've done it this way for 17 years and I'm going to fight this new stuff every day"?
Personally, I don't think they let Fichtner's contract expire if they think Ben is coming back or if they don't have plans to "counsel" him that it's time to hang 'em up (ala Troy).

With Fichtner gone does Ben want to start with a new OC?

I say yes, because a new OC might actually take into account how Ben plays rather than trying to force him into the 2-4 yard passing game that was so successful this year for the Steelers under Fichtner. And, Ben being able to play football the way he knows best will get him excited particularly when he looks up and sees Johnson, Claypool and Washington all 3 guys will battle for 50/50 balls.
