After another subpar game and a third loss in a row to an inferior opponent, there have to be some legitimate concerns from the FO moving forward with Ben as QB. Let me be open about this, he's one of my favorite players and I want to see him go out on his own terms. I also acknowledge the business side of football and setting up a winner for the future.
Taking a step back and thinking about it...if the Steelers cut Ben after the season, would anyone sign him? I don't think anyone would. Why not?
*He's physically breaking down. The deep ball hasn't been there all year. Don't let one perfect pass to Diontae Johnson sway your opinion. You can't forget the two grossly underthrown balls to Washington the past two weeks that would've been big gains or even TDs if he hits him in stride. He can still put zip on the ball, but its inconsistent at this point. He can't hit the tight windows with consistency. The lower body mechanics have been bad, throwing flat footed far too often. He used to be able to muscle the ball in there like his interception on third down when all of the Bengals' linebackers dropped. Instead he threw a soft INT.
*He doesn't want to get hit. Why is he getting rid of the ball so quickly? He doesn't want to take the physical pounding. There are very few long developing plays and other times when there are, he doesn't allow them to develop because he's looking for the short option. It doesn't help that the overrated pass blocking of this offensive line allows so much pressure.
*His play is limiting the offense. Blame the OC all you want, they adjusted last night and Ben just couldn't connect with his receivers like we're used to. Without a strong running game this year, he carried the team on his back. It looks like after all of these years he's finally getting tired and can't do it alone. The problem is every team in the NFL knows it and they're having an incredibly easy time defending this offense. All of the creativity in the world isn't going to make him mobile in the pocket, bring back his ability to thread the needle on every pass, or hit on those deep balls like he used to.
*I simply don't think he has a full healthy season in him. I don't mean physically injured, but rather physically limited. At some point you break down. These defenders are smart, fast, and strong. Ben isn't getting any better and I don't want to see his play fall off a cliff playing another season.
*It was not a coincidence that Schefter reported Ben wants to come back to play another season in the midst of this stretch that he's showing he doesn't have it anymore--and by "it," I mean franchise QB stuff.
I'm loyal to a fault to long-time Steelers players and I wanted to believe Ben could be out there for another 2-3 years, but my eyes didn't deceive me last night or the past few weeks. I am beginning to believe this is it for Ben and you better believe I will enjoy every second left in this season because we don't know the next time we'll have one of the greatest players in franchise history under center.
