2019-20 Penguins and NHL Offseason

93.7 The Fan is reporting Jack Johnson will be traded in the next 48 hrs. Salary dump.

Sid, Rust and Galchenyuk were no go at practice this morning. Sid did skate on his own, though.

I don't have a good feeling about Rust. He came off the ice fast and went straight down the runway. I think Sid and Chucky will be ready (hope). Yohe tweeted there are offers on the table to take JMFJ. I can't wait to see what our retention $ are and who we lose. Just don't trade the damn 1st rounder.

I'm ok with JJ going, but I don't think that he was a bad as everyone seems to.

I agree, he just doesn't fit the system. Still he has never lived up to his lofty draft status. I think it was a worthwhile reclamation project but it failed. Giving him term was a fatal miscalculation. I'm not getting excited until I see what moving him costs.

I was listening to Stan the other day. His guest said that Johnson's play this pre-season was about the same as last year. He didn't see any fire in him at all. If you can get a salary dump and a bag of beans please trade this guy.

I don't think it's going to be worth much to the Pens but to take the salary off the books to get under the cap. I wouldn't be surprised if we pay half of his salary for maybe a late round pick or a minor leaguer

Johnson was a terrible signing from the start. These are starting to become the norm for Rutherford.

Here's my take on JMFJ. The Pens have a solid history of making struggling defensemen better. He had the pedigree to be at least #5, Hell, the guy was drafted 3rd overall. He played 82 games, averaging 19 minutes last year with 147 blocks and 233 hits. He only ended the year at -4. If he didn't make $3.25M and for the next 4 years there wouldn't be so much bitching. This is the risk you take when you mortgage the future in "win now" mode.

I complained louder than most on the guy. He had amateur pedigree but has only had one strong season since 2012. I still believe like most, that this was done with blind hope and as a favor to Sid. That said, He wasn't the reason the team fell flat last year and wouldn't be this year. It was a mistake, you make them, you move on.

JJ was ok, not terrible, but didn't impress. He was quietly sorta solid? If it comes down to trading Rust(like it was reported) or JJ, I rather keep Rust. We know one hammer will fall to get under the cap and if they can unload Johnson, so be it. They have capable guys that can fill that role.

Damn.... Pens put DeSmith on waivers. Keep Jarry, I didn't see that coming. Jarry is cheaper and supposedly has a starter upside. I've always like Jarry's game but it rarely showed at the NHL level.

I've got a feeling Rust has a broken hand and will be out. That may have trumped trading JMFJ.

In other news.... Daniel Sprong and Garrett Wilson are on waivers.

could be. Not sure, but JJ makes a lot more than Rust, does he not?

Rust could possibly be a sweetener in a deal to move JJ's contract. He's been in the rumor mill for a long time. I like Rust but we have a glut of middle forwards and little cap space. None of this will matter if he hits LTIR. If only Rust could use that speed to put the puck in the net.

really??? I'd bring Sprong back. I thought it was a mistake we traded him away. Throw him down WBS until we need him.

Although the Pens screwed up his development. Sprong has proven he has little hockey IQ. H's still young but I think any hope of a career is in Europe.

I agree 100%. I would also add that he was very good using his body. He never hesitated to stop a forecheck with his brawn. Also, he could get between a puck and a forward by positioning. I liked the guy. Blue collar work.

I was lukewarm on the signing, always hoping for the best, but he didn't piss me off. He did his job. Slow, not flashy, but serviceable. LIke UB said, if he didn't make almost $4M, I don't think he would get the crap tossed his way. Malkin, on the other hand, pissed me off with his lazy play.

The good side is that Malkin seemed pissed at his play too, and he can step it up. He gets back on track and it's all forgiven.

Really not happy about Jarry over DeSmith. I hope I eat my words on that one.

He'll get another chance at the NHL level. Some team will give him a chance. He made an impact with the Ducks. There were flashes there.

Hope so for Malkin, as Phil's exit was largly his call. Needs to put up or shut up.

Jarry is still young, so I think this is his shot to give Murray a push, if he falters. DeSmith is 28 and will always be a career back-up.
