Canada Will Return in 2023

and there is another story saying he is gone

That didn't age well.

Canada was a bad hire two years ago and now after two poor seasons offensively, Tomlin doubled down on Canada being his offensive coordinator by keeping him for year three.

He may have hated the Steelers from his coaching days but I never really felt like it bled into the broadcast unless Immaculate reception was brought up.
It didn't. He was good with that. I'm a youth from the 70s, though. I hated everything Raider. And Cowboy.

Don't be shocked if we see more of the same. Whatever they install for the year pretty much stays. The only thing that changed this year is they found a running game after the bye week.

That helped tremendously.

Just have to see how they draft. They need to invest in both sides of the line. ****** lines cost you championships.

Let me play devils advocate here.

First off, Toss out year 1 of the Canada as OC… they know every bit as much as we do that he mostly ran the Fitchner offense to appease Ben.

Secondly they factor in that the first half of this season, he had a brand new qb that quickly gave way to a Rookie Qb, and both were playing behind a rebuilt line that for the first six or seven games, looked like it wasn’t going to be even average in anything. Also the starting RB played through a lis franc for the first half…

Then they look at his primary three things the owner and coach wanted
1. Run the ball better (they were top 7 after the bye)
2. Not turn the ball over ( they had 4 picks and 1 fumble lost in the 9 games after the bye… 3 of those picks were when Trabisky went in cold vs the Ravens…
3. Develop Pickett.. after the bye pickett went 6-1. His Passer rating and qbr climbed into relative good levels for a rookie, and he had back to back 4th quarter game winning drives in spectacular fashion…

Then they look at his playcalling, which had been very bad because he had virtually no nfl experience going into the OC position, but had gotten much better down the stretch

And so they determined that he should be retained.. however i fully expect them to add a sr offensive assistant who will take over midseason if he falters. Maybe Leftwich or Whipple… there should be a ton of guys that fit that criteria…

If they are keeping canada because he has 1 year left on his contract then AR2 has to sell the team. He's become Mike Brown, a cheapskate who will never see real success unless he gives up control.

This is sickening. You drafted Kenny Pickett round 1. I didn't love the pick. Still not sure he's the guy but you have to go all in on developing him. Canada is not the guy. The franchise has gotten spoiled with years of Big Ben where you take QB play for granted. You were able to get by with substandard playcallers but now you need a real teacher.

The steelers are hoping that Matt Canada can develop as an OC while also developing Pickett as a QB. It's crazy.

Did it or did the level of competition decrease?

Does he get a pass for no NFL experience?

We will see what this team looks like the next time they face a Juggernaut.

Triple reverse on 3rd and 2, it's good for me and good for you!

The Poet who doesn’t know it………

Brain child, but don’t get wild……….

Stick with the double reverse, keep the QB out of the hearse………

While playing with his Pokemon,
the loon misplaced his crayon.
Now those three plays..
are gone.

DK Daily Shot has a pretty good piece out today about bringing Matt Canada back.

I agree with most he sayes on this topic and it seems to legitimate In the pros and cons.

I mean they did Face the Ravens, who were one of the best Run D’s in the league, with the season on the line and both teams playing for something and put 198 yards rushing on them

16 points scored in that game. You will need more than that against the KC,Buffalo,Niners, etc of the league.

Points scored is what impresses me. The good playoff teams average better...

To score you have to not play like a ***** in the red zone, and save for a small but of time during the haley/ Ben era… that hasn’t happened.. so im pretty sure that issue isn’t tied to OC

Therein lies the big problem here… FANS want one thing, but it’s beyond obvious that the owner and head coach are asking for something else entirely.
Its a flawed logic issue on the team side, if you ask me… the teams greatest accomplishments typically have come from a strong defense, punishing run game, and ultra conservative passing game…

This is not the way to win consistently in this NFL, but the fact is that when Ben had his greatest offensive seasons, our d often had down years or our run game was secondary at best.. and we simply didn’t win anything… it wasn’t cause and effect… but it looks that way to people who don’t get big picture concepts

Ben threw for fewer than 20 tds in like 6 seasons…
-one was 2019 due to season ending injury
-one was 2006 when he played after missing most of the offseason due to recovery from being hit by a car and having his mouth wired shut then having an appendectomy.. he was not physically ready to play until about midseason, but did anyhow.
the other four were 2004,05,08,and 10… they produced 3 Super Bowl appearances and an afc cg loss…they simply don’t think scoring is as important as defense, despite all tge metrics that disagree with that across the league… just look at what they spent money on and you see it…

Morning show on The Fan is saying that right now.

I hope I'm wrong but I don't see this offense being anywhere near as good as it could be with Canaduh as the OC. He is a terrible play caller. Sure, he has a few spurts where they move the ball but he can't do it consistently and he can't adjust (like Tomlin) on the fly based on game conditions. That and I expect NFL DC's to have answers for his college plays within 1 year of seeing them and possibly during the year. I'd be surprised if this O averages more than 22 points per game next year. That's an improvement from this year but still nowhere near good enough.

Wow...finally some logic instead of emotional outrage. Thank you for this perspective, Mad.

I'd like to add that when you have a rookie QB and use the running game more than the passing game, the scoring is less. Running the ball eats clock.

One of my predictions next season, if I remember, will be 20th or worse in average points per game.

What does Mike Tomlin see in Matt Canada that we don't? 2021 he had Big Ben and averaged 20 PPG. We were told Big Ben was the problem with the offense in 2021 Obviously. We run the guy out of town and he retires. Steelers sign Mitch Trubisky & Draft Kenny Pickett (The Future). 2022 Steelers average 18 PPG. The offense did seem to improve slightly towards the last quarter of the season but still struggled and averaged just 18PPG this season. Show me an NFL Playoff team that made the playoffs this season averaging 18PPG. There isn't one! Even the Chargers fired their OC who averaged 23 PPG this season.....it's just not enough! You need an offense that is averaging 25PPG or better.

KC - 29 PPG
Buffalo - 28 PPG
Cincy - 25 PPG
Jacksonville - 24 PPG
-
-
Steelers - 18 PPG (Far below the line.....playoffs will never happen when this is what your offense scores on an average week in the NFL.

This is what I hate most about Tomlin is that he doesn't make the necessary changes when it come to his assistant coaches. Canada was a major problem in 2022 and he will be the difference maker and I don't mean that in a good way when it comes to this team making the playoffs in 2023. Perhaps we get in because of a weak NFL Schedule for the Steelers but they will be one and done in the playoffs with Canada's offense.

So frustrating! I'm sure the same crap will happen with Teryl Austin as he will get a pass too. He sucks and he should be FIRED also. I'm so pissed off and the 2023 season hasn't even officially begun yet.
18 PPG seems really crappy and is 26th in the league. However if we just averaged 4 more ppg we would jump above the giants to 14th. Another 6 ppg would get us in the top 10. At the beginning of the season we were lucky to not get a 3 and out. Toward the mid / end we were a ball control grind it out offense who led the league in 10+ play drives. Boswell had a bad season and we were pretty terrible in the red zone. Another 4-6 more points per game is certainly do able especially if Pickett develops and we build up the line. I 100% thought Canada should have been fired at the bye week or sooner, but the offense seemed to turn it around a little. If we continue to build on what we did after the bye then I am not against retaining Canada.

I would have been more than happy to see them move on from Canada, but I get why they wouldn't. He did improve to a degree, Kenny improved along with almost every aspect of the offense. Even DJ started going forward more often than backward. It still needs a lot of work and added complexity in the passing tree and better play calling to be less predictable without getting overly cute. I would have him on a short leash.

Personally, I feel it’s a mistake. But Tomlin has a pulse on the team, and as shown this year, knows what he he is doing. I felt Canada should be launched to the moon, but who knows, maybe Tomlin is going to bring in another assistant. Heck, if Leftwich gets fired, bring him in as pass coord to help with actual routes.

Okay, so The Fan Morning Show is obviously reading our board and stealing my material.

29th until they opened the floodgates and scored a crap ton of points in the last game. Prior to that KC was AVERAGING two TD’s more per game than we were.
