Giant Confederate battle flag visible from I-75 in spotlight again

TAMPA — Tampa’s mayor says it’s time for the huge Confederate battle flag flying near a heavily traveled Hillsborough intersection to go.

But the only way the flag will come down is in a hurricane, says the leader of a local Confederate history group that maintains the flag and flagpole.

Even then, the world’s largest battle flag would rise again, said David McAllister, commander of the Judah P. Benjamin Camp, the local chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

“We all sympathize with the poor victims of Charleston, but the flag did not cause that to happen,” McAllister said Monday. “That was a horrible crime done by a mentally ill criminal responsible for his own actions, and people calling for gun and flag limitations in response are standing against the American Constitution. The flag shouldn’t remind people of a bad thing, but remind them that bad times were overcome.”

The statement in red puzzles me...

Yes. Yes I do.
Guess we're not going to get any visual aid to support this...

Oh don't worry, the Stars and Bars will be next...the Left hates that one even more

Farrakhan: I Don’t Get Debate Over Confederate Flag, ‘We Need to Put the American Flag Down’

The racist leader of the Nation of Islam told a largely black audience in Washington, D.C. that "we need to put the American flag down" because "we've caught as much hell under that as the Confederate flag."

http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2015/06/farrakhan_we_need_to_put_the_american_flag_down.html

Farrakhan has lost his rocker.

I'm in the Asheville, NC area for a long weekend. The confederate flag is all over around here. Cars and trucks are flying it proudly. At dinner tonight I saw mini redneck parade of 4 pick ups and a Lumina flying full size flags and cruising the downtown strip in Hendersonville, very slowly, just begging for someone to screw with them.

Luminas still exist????

Luminas ran forever.........odd for a GM product.

My parents had one when I was in HS. I drove it, and then when I got married 6 years after HS, they gave it to me. I want to say the car was 10 years old then, and that was 1997.

My flags arrived a couple days ago. They're beauties......well made, vivid colors, really quality. Problem is they're 6x7 which is bigger than my U.S Flag. Was gonna run it up under Old Glory and the Gadsden I always fly but will have to get a bigger U.S. first.

I just saw what the good ole boys here in Dayton did when NASCAR asked them to trade in their Rebel flags for an American flag. They laughed, then they got persnickety and then some started to push back.

There's a push now..believe it or not, for a new "The South will Rise Again" campaign. So far it's limited to trailer parks and people with old washing machines in their yard but it's growing.

Well the flag came down in SC. Glad their racial issues are officially solved.

Poor Nikki

I suspect she will be voted out - Rednecks are funny that way.

Kid Rock is still flying it on stage and telling protesters to **** off.

So you really think that taking the flag down has helped racism?

I would venture to guess it has probably made it worse. That flag doesn't stand for slavery any more than Muslims stand for Christianity. I have no dog in this fight. That flag doesn't make me feel more one way or another.

Removing that flag is symbolic at best. Throwing people a bone and nothing more. Seeing it as a step toward a solution is laughable. They can remove all the flags and statues they want. It will not change our history, ugly as it sometimes was. And removing that flag will not change the heart of a racist. Pretty sure that flag didn't turn anyone into a racist, just like it didn't go into a church and kill nine good people.

This is exactly how I feel. I'm curious to hear bermy's answer.

Just another example of how polarized this country is. What will it take to unite us. .....an attack from aliens?

I agree with this as well. Also, I have no dog in the fight, either. The flag pisses me off really only when displayed by some idiot PA kid who doesn't know ****. They lost, for **** sake. It would be like us flying the 1995 Pittsburgh Steeler AFCC banner, instead of one of their Super Bowl banners.

The lesson in this though is they are never, ever done. They got the flag down, now they want to dig up dead guys. When is enough enough?

When I was growing up the flag stood for Southern Rock. I have a mini rebl flag from Blackfoots 1981-1985 tour....and they were American Indians.

Blackfoot is an American Southern rock musical ensemble from Jacksonville, Florida organized during 1970. Though they are primarily a Southern rock band, they are also known as a hard rock act.[1] The band's classic lineup consisted of guitarist and vocalist Rickey Medlocke, guitarist Charlie Hargrett, bassist Greg T. Walker, and drummer Jakson Spires.
They have had a number of successful albums during the 1970s and early 1980s, including Strikes (1979), Tomcattin' (1980) and Marauder (1981).........

......... after learning of another band on the West Coast named Hammer, decided to change their name to Blackfoot to represent the American Indian heritage of Walker, Spires and Medlocke (Spires was part Cherokee, Medlocke part Sioux, and Walker part Eastern Creek, a Florida Indian tribe).

BTW......I have seen a lot of really cool bands ever since my first concert in 1977....of all the great artists that I have seen no one stands taller, shined brighter, or had more stage presence than Rickey Medlocke during the Blackfoot years. That dude has always been the whole ******* show.

In Birmingham they love the Governor (George Wallace) ........BOO.....BOO......BOO

Ronnie van Zandt and Lynyrd Skynyrd getting all racist and **** with the Confederate Flag. While penning a song called Sweet Home Alabama which had a verse dedicated to criticizing George Wallace for his stand against integration.

Sweet Home Alabama is now the Official State Song of Alabama.

The inside cover of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Pack Up The Plantation Live Double Album recorded for the most part during the Southern Accents Tour.

Tom and the Heartbreakers obviously recruiting for the Klan.

I saw Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers a few years later when someone threw a Rebel Flag (what we called it) on the stage

TP said that at one time he loved this flag, it reminded him of growing up in the south and the pride he had of being from North Florida. Then he said some groups of hate have co-opted the Flag and now he won't have anything to do with it anymore.

That is an honorable position to have, and was stated very well. In fact I agree with pretty much all of it.

But it does not mean Tom is not a racist now any more that it meant he that he was a racist then when he used the confederate flag as a stage prop.

Just because Tom changed his mind, does not necessarily mean that I have must adhere to his evolving belief system. That would be tyranny.

Freedom and liberty is a beautiful thing.

The Mob Mentality is what is destructive. It is what happened in Rwanda. It happened in Germany. It is happening right now in the middle east.

One of the first outrageous acts that the Taliban did was Blow up 2 statues of the Buddah carved into a mountainside. I saw that on the nightly news when it happened and my immediate thought was how EVIL. And that was prior to 9/11.

Now Isis is doing the very same thing.

This is the town square in beautiful Abbeville SC.

up-BNSCI6V280A1OA0D.jpg

In the middle of the town square that is adorned with multiple United States Flags is the Confederate Soldiers Monument. On it is a confederate flag etched in granite. Part of the inscription states these words from the Daughters of the Confederacy originally engraved in 1906........."In our hearts we know our boys was right"

If the sight of a Confederate Flag is so offensive and it must be banished, when do you think we start going all Taliban on these historical monuments that are built on public property?

Last night while in downtown Asheville NC, we went by the Vance Monument to see if we would be offended. The Vance monument is for a former confederate soldier, Governor and US Senator. Right in front of it is a monument to Robert E. Lee. A soldier of note and a world renowned racist.

I told my wife and daughter that within 3 years the Lee monument would be removed and the Vance monument would be renamed. Just a few weeks ago someone painted Black Lives Matter on it. When I see anarchists using race to divide Americans to further their Socialist/Communist causes it PISSES me off.

ALL LIVES MATTER

There is an old axiom "Those who do not remember their history are doomed to repeat it"

140 years later The Civil War remains the Deadliest War in US History. These monuments, these battlefields, are reminders of what once happened. The point at which we start erasing our history is the point where we become closer to the next civil war and not further away from the last one.

It will be the point where we start forgetting our history.

The end result of the Civil War, the key acts leading up to it, the Emancipation proclamation, the 13th Amendment, is something to be cherished and revered. The high cost should never be forgotten.
