Colbert or Tomlin whoever has the final say needs to go

4-12 or 10-6 is this even a question? can you imagine 12 Mondays of not turning on sportscenter?

Hell, I would argue that 11-5 and losing in the first round to the Ravens is as bad as 4-12. I see it as a missed opportunity with this team. I think people may look at this team and think the arrow is pointing up, and maybe it is offensively. But man, defensively it could be real bad for a while. So again the missed opportunity. Since they got there they needed to make some noise, because I don't know if they will automatically be there over the next few years.

The difference with me is I am not running around screaming Tomlin or whoever has to go. I don't feel this childish need to assign blame, because it just isn't as simple as all that. I wish it was, but it ain't.

I would say it is simple they continue to funnel in mediocre talent thru free agency and the draft. You have to be good in one of the areas.

If something isn't working you do not do it over and over and over and over again.

The team seems to have a hard time adapting to whatever faces them.

You don't have to scream for change, but it isn't unwarranted to want changes in-light of 2 playoff wins in a 8 year span.

Even if the fix isn't a easy one, attempting to fix nothing won't bring the results a nation of fans desires.............

We've been cap strapped by bad decisions AND bad foresight.

Colbert was drastically unprepared for the "flat zone" of cap dollars after the last CBA (2011-2013). He also failed to take advantage of any of the advantages 2010 (uncapped year) provided him (although that may have been directed by the Rooneys as part of the owner's collusion on that issue). This issue might also be more on Omar Khan as well (I'm not sure how those divisions of power/knowledge are separated exactly). When you watch that stupid movie Draft Day the GM seems clueless to cap dollars and justs "asks the nerd". I doubt (but can't be for sure) if Colbert is like that.

If I were to argue in favor of keeping Colbert (which I am not) and be jesus' advocate, I could say give Colbert a chance now that the cap is projected to rise 5-6% annually over the next 5 seasons and get back to an era where Colbert was more effective (early to mid 2000's) in free agency and cap management.

I still think we aren't as efficient with our cap dollars as some teams out there. And when you combine that with not being efficient with our draft choices, you get chinks in the roster around Roethlisberger.

I could go with a new GM. I remember the belief that Omar Khan was being groomed to be our next GM when Colbert hands in the keys to the kingdom - or has them removed from his possession. Just wonder if that would still be in play?

Omar Khan - GM
Tomlin - coach
Haley - OC
Butler - DC

It's hard to know much about Omar Khan. I don't think I've ever even heard him speak. His biography is very limited. We only "sort of know" what his job responsibilities are.

We do know he's NOT an ex-football player or coach (which I'm actually okay with). We don't know how that translates into his ability to evaluate talent or if he's even had that role much in his career (his Wiki page says he was a Scouting/Personnel intern for New Orleans but not for how long before he was moved into their football operations department).

He's currently 37 years old, which I'm okay with too.

Really, it would come down to knowing him. How progressively thinking is he? How smart is he? How open minded is he? How does he get along with others when given a position of authority?

Again, I've long held the belief a GM should NOT be a glorified scout and his primary job is actually resource management - i.e. the ability to squeeze as much talent/players out of the limited resources available (draft picks, cash, salary cap). I also think it takes a bit of a natural ability to read people and see through players/prospects to find qualities not on the field that lead to professional success. I think any good scout(s) can tell you all you need to know about what a player can do on the football field. The good GMs take that info and evaluate the person and whether he can become a pro as quickly as the NFL demands.

I am intrigued by Khan and would probably like to see some experience OUTSIDE football to balance out his resume a bit (I also don't believe GM's need to be football lifers and that the ability to manage resources successfully in other businesses would translate to the NFL).

If I was an NFL owner, I would almost groom my GM like I would groom my son for the business/takeover. You want smarts. You want a high quality of education in a TOUGH major that pushes his limits. You want to have him work in different departments and aspects of all your business with the grunts early in his life to gain humility and understand hard work. You want to have a trusted employee teach him things you don't even know. And then when you think he's ready you start teaching him to be a GM (not a scout) and prepare him to take over the position.

Sometimes I just don't understand the NFL. This is a ******* $300 million business and it fires/hires people like no other business in the world. Any other $300 million business has much more sophisticated ways to develop it's key executive positions and plans upon plans for succession if any key person leaves. In any other business, if a company had so little plans for succession at such a key position and hired people on such apparent whims of the owner, no one would invest in them.

This is easy to explain. Other businesses have to motivate people to buy their products. The NFL doesn't have that issue. The game is not the game I grew up with and enjoyed, yet I will still watch because I love football and the Steelers. However, for years I got NIKE shoes as my workout shoes. I just don't like them as much anymore and have gone to other shoes. The NFL is one of the few things that a person may not like as much as they used to but they will keep coming back to. They have us, we are hooked. Teams could hire nothing but Elmer Fudds as their GMs and we would still watch.

I have no allegiance to Tomlin and agree that change could be good. I would be fine with that.

I approach my fandom in this way. Being a fan should be enjoyable. This should be fun, and I refuse to get myself all miserable worrying about who is coaching or GMing them. Besides, I have no control over it, anyway. To be honest, for a portion of this year is was not enjoyable, but toward end, those last 4 weeks, it seemed they were turning the corner. I really started to like the team, which is why the one and done is a disappointment, why it almost does feel like a losing, or non-playoff season.

Another thing is, let me use this example. I really disliked the Jarvis Jones pick. They had attached his name to the Steelers while he was still at Georgia, and because of that, I watched him some. I remember talking to my buddy and stating that I sure do hope they don't take him, as he kinda just runs around out there. He doesn't do much, at least the games I saw. It appears right now that my feelings about him were right. But I don't wanna be right. I want to be wrong. I think there is the difference with some fans. They would almost rather the Steelers lose but they be right, instead of they be wrong and the Steelers win.

Khan's name came up frequently as a potential GM candidate for other teams in the 2008-2011 period. One doesn't hear it anymore, for obvious reasons.

Jets were interested in him in 2013 and the Dolphins in 2014.

I can't speak for "other" fans, and sure I don't mind being wrong about a coach etc.

personally I would rather win and be wrong....

if say the problem is simply who scouts OLBers and CBs I would be for changing that

if say the problem is Colbert has the final say and he is responsible for bringing in a plethora of free agent scrubs and a smaller productive percentage of draft picks. I am alright with just replacing him.

From Tomlin to Dick whoever be the culprit.

Small stretch of games was enjoyable for me. As a lot of the games including the last one was painful to watch.

You are right being a fan should be enjoyable. And for a good stretch of time for me it was. Way back when....

As I could see legitimate sensible effort from the players as well as for the decisions the team made.

Lately it is just more draft picks wrong over right, majority free agents wrong over right.

I would like to just see the Steelers competitive, and that Raven game just wasn't. The season ended for me just like it started.

The O has made strides, but 15 points in a playoff game will not win most of them.

D has a lot of issues, probably more than one seasons fix.

If they at-least make sense in the off-season with effort, I am sure the games next year will be enjoyable for me.

Other teams like the Patriots, Denver, and Ravens make off-season moves that made sense.

I guess that is what I desire more than anything besides being competitive game in game out, it is off-season moves that make sense.

..................give the team a fighting chance talent wise.

Blount in some ways made no sense, not replacing him with a experienced vet after he was cut made no sense. Bringing in Cam Thomas to start made no sense. Expecting Ike to rebound made no sense. Not drafting a corner higher made no sense, not bringing in one rated higher than 31 other starting CBs made no sense. Not replacing Adams made no sense. Starting Polamalu coming of a extended injury in a playoff game when Allen was playing better made no sense. Handing rookies starting gigs when their performance didn't earn it, made no sense. Not spreading the field with Moore, not activated against the Ravens with secondary issues, made no sense. Not changing D schematics to fit your current talent on the roster makes no sense.

Been a long time that I thought the Steelers could actually go and win it all. Regardless if they do or not.... enjoyable for me rests with the obvious' obviously.

I can't argue with any of that. That is how it is done. Well thought out points, without ridiculous hyperbole.

Where are folks gettin the whole "two playoff wins in eight seasons..." ? We won THREE playoff games in just one postseason the year we won the super bowl....the following Super Bowl in 2011 we won two playoff games.....so thats FIVE wins by my count in eight seasons....

I use standard universal math..not that backwoods West VurrJenya version

Well see, first you have to throw out the Super Bowl years because .... well Cowher('s players). After you discredit Tomlin for anything that has to do with those Super Bowl years (because ... well Cowher('s players), it's easy to get to two wins in eight seasons. All you have to do is close your eyes and pretend that Tomlin wasn't the coach ... because ... well Cowher('s players).

That's advanced Algebraic, calculus, revisionist physics there.

I didn't back that stat up I think another poster referenced it and I saw no corrections... we will just leave it long over due for a playoff win..............

And as we know, 2011-14 doesn't count in the discussion of Mike Tomlin Era. It's off limits.

Who said that?

12-4 8-8 8-8 11-5 is that really worth firing over?? I mean seriously. This is after two super bowls in the 4 previous years. I dont see how you can fire anyone with those stats.

Those years weren't what was asked about. I simply responded to what was asked. Feel free to discuss whichever years of Tomlin's tenure that you would like. It would just be more "helpful" if folks didn't make patently and factually erroneous statements in order to bolster their points.

Those of you who revel in 2007-10 and claim THAT'S why Tomlin should be guaranteed his job.

Those stats depict TEAM performance, not that of any one particular cog in the machine.

Of course they do. We only go by arrows around here. So im guessing after missing the playoffs for two years and now making it the arrow is swinging upward.

I don't know why you bother. Gratz on the persistence, I guess.

Glutton for punishment I guess..

we need to stop losing to ******* pathetic teams, especially when we come out and look unprepared, that is on the coach.

as i said before, I think Tomlin is a good coach, horrible at talent evaluation and in game adjustments.

Unprepared the most used word on here that no one here can prove.
