I figure ND fans will view my pick as sour grapes, but make note that I hate Ohio State.
I can't see ND winning this game. Their offense is not good.
I was surprised how easily Penn State dominated their rush defense. Penn State's OL is a lot better than Ohio State's but Chip Kelly is a great run designer. I think they will be able to do some of the same things Penn State did on the ground and Howard can do more RPO than Allar.
ND plays a ton of man coverage. That worked against Indiana, who could not block ND, and Georgia, who had a backup QB and WRs dropping balls, and against Penn State whose WRs could not get open at all. (On a side note, that final INT by Allar was on the WR. He ran a lazy route and Allar threw it where he should have then took the blame in the presser).
ND will play man against Ohio State's WRs who are both likely 1st round draft picks. Their secondary will challenge them but I doubt they can shut them out like they did Penn State's JV squad of WRs. The only hope is Ohio State's patchwork OL has trouble picking up all the blitzes and stunts and Howard gets rattled.
I think there's a chance ND gets shutout. They have to run the ball to win and their OL is injured.
Ohio State's defense is outstanding and has no real weakness. ND has no threats at WR. Penn State had a great plan to take away the QB power run of Riley Leonard using their safeties. Ohio State can replicate this plan or just use a LB to spy. Leonard is not outrunning their LBs.
ND is tough and i do think they'll get a few scores but not many. The only way i see ND winning is if Will Howard throws multiple INTs and ND gets a defensive or special teams score.
