Does the Emperor have New Clothes? The Media's Mike Tomlin Lie

I agree. But why do we get so upset at the whole thing? Tomlin a just a football coach. The Steelers are just a football team. And, it's just football. Their success or lack thereof changes nothing for any of us except our mood. Hell, I'm guilty as anyone. Not nearly as much as I used to be, but still.
Exactly

He’s just a coach of a pass time meant for entertainment.

I used to live and die with results, now I just take it for what it is and enjoy it when they field an entertaining product…maybe if we were suffering more crushing losses (like a SB or AFCC loss) it would hurt more, but it doesn’t once the expectations are lowered.

Now I just look at it as a reason to eat some wings, drink some beers and relax for a few hours…can’t remember the last time this team actually raised my blood pressure or made me scream at the TV.

Those days are long gone, I suspect for better

No one is denying he won with Cowher players. That is not the point. The point is he won
Tomlin won a Super Bowl with the same players that “Cowher” couldn’t… go look in Wikipedia coward was not the winning coach. I just don’t understand why you guys give that guy credit for a Super Bowl winning team that he he clearly didn’t win.

History states The JAW got nothing done with the same cast…zip the year before.

Tomlin WAS THE WINNING SUPER BOWL COACH…

Haha...what did I say? I thought I have been pretty consistent saying more or less the same thing you are saying.

McCarthy is the same coach minus the snappy quips, that's all. Ends there.

Pretty sure we can all agree
Big Ben was the SB winning QB
Long gap from TB to BB
I expect another long gap until the next great QB

That Cowher won one before Ben got dominant was fairly amazing,
That Tomlin only won one with a HOF QB also pretty amazing

Would love to see Mike win another without the necessity of the greatest play in SB history and a HoF QB dragging him there, but definitely not holding my breath on it either.

You're an asshat. Cowher won his SB.

Cowher is on record saying that "his girls" were in North Carolina and so was his head and heart. He stepped away from the game after that season to be with them.

I hate this argument to begin with. 13 of the 24 starting players were different between 2005 and 2008 squads. I tried to present them, but I got an error message that my post was too long.

So if Tomlin coaches 10 more years after this to reach that 63 (playing your woulda/coulda game you played with Cowher) that’s 170 more games

At his winning percentage of .636 that’s 108 more wins plus his 179 for 287
He has 9 more games this year so let’s just round down to 5 more for 292 total to Cowher’s 279 placing Mike only behind Shula in the woulda/coulda game and ahead of Cowher.

Thanks Gildong, now ya got me thinking of scenarios where we get 12 more years of Mike…this woulda/coulda game sucks.

No math please.

Big play willie gay comes to mind regarding players that improved under Tomlin.

How about a great rookie season from Claypool?

Highsmith was a hidden gem.

I don't think Tomlin is a great coach but gotta recognize the good too
Another that gets forgotten about plenty is Keenan Lewis. Dude was a legit #1 (with a 3rd round grade)!before wanting to sign with his hometown team in NO.

Oh man. Again, we agree on most in substance. But would have Noll won Super Bowl 9 without Joe Greene making one great play after another? How about Super Bowl 10, with Swann making all those catches, some of the best in Super Bowl history. How about Bleier's catch in Super bowl 13? Or Bradshaw's absolute dime to Stallworth in 14? Maybe one of the best throws in Super Bowl history?

I would argue every coach is "dragged" to a Super Bowl win. They don't play.

Again, yes, he won with a largely Cowher built team. You are shadow boxing. I'm not disagreeing with you on that. My point is does it really matter? Should it matter? Tomlin won with that team. Anything else is speculation, which means it's bullshiit. I could care less who's team you want to consider it, I am just happy he won. It was a fun year. Winning that AFCC against the Ravens in Pittsburgh, and that whole game, the physicality of it, the weather, that's what I think about. The drive in the Super Bowl. Harrison's return. Not who's team it was.

Don't listen to the media. They are clueless, and all it does is aggravate.
Yes, it should matter. Look what he's done since 2011. He was a bad hire.

No, it should not matter for that moment in time. What has happened since is a separate issue, and as I have stated, a completely legitimate issue.

Congratulations on cheering Russell Wilson. You certainly know more than an NFL head coach. Why are you sitting on your couch when you could be charting the course of a professional sports franchise? Do you have a resume?

We need to get your talents in front of the people who make decisions. With you at the helm of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the sky is the limit.

May I have your resume?
Straw man much?

Yeah except for one little detail...Cowher did that without a franchise QB through most of his run....Tomlin had one for most of his so far. And it's pretty much a given that without one he will get nowhere near those numbers.

He almost won one with O'Donnell who was a journeyman QB against a Cowboys dynasty team. Now just imagine Tomlin doing the same....it is literally laughing out loud laughable. Like I said I don't hate Tomlin, but when you've been around as long as I have and you've watched the team since the 70s things are clear and kept in perspective.

I’ve watched since the 70s too

Just sayin it’s laughable whenever ya start playing the woulda/coulda game

Cowher’s career was his career, nowhere close to Shula’s wins

Tomlin’s career is still being written

Hopefully we’ll know his final totals soon too, if ya haven’t noticed by now I’m no Mike apologist…just playing your game with the current coach showing how his track on the woulda/coulda game would compare.

What has happened since is a reflection of the Rooneys hired.

Tomlin is the same guy that went 31st against the pass in MN as defensive coordinator in 2006. All of a sudden he's a great coach cause of what Cowher left him?
