Draft discussion thread.

Who sits the bench on 3rd down and passing situations? You're not benching your alleged pass rushers Jarvis or Worilds. Are you benching Timmons? Are you benching Shazier? Then why draft him?

I'd bench Jar Jar in a heart beat.

not crying, I was asking if he was talked about because I didn't hear anything about him going to PGH.

Yeah, he has been talked about. He visited. Look, he is not tiny. He is 6'1"-237 which is decent size for an ILB coming out of college. He is young and could add another 5-10 pounds and be at a solid playing weight. He can cover. Kid can run like few out there. Good COD, great leaper, leader, solid citizen. Good all-around guy. He can handle coverages, good gap shooter that can make plus plays. My issue is pretty simple, he does not play to his size when he takes on blocker. He can get knocked off his feet sometimes. Needs to get better in that area and IMO, that is tough to do. I view it as a physicality thing. I mean, people are all over Timmons for not taking on guys in the hole, Shazier is not as good as Timmons.

I think he is smart enough to play the mike though. He scored a 20 on the Wonderlic. I think he is the guy they groom to play beside Timmons. I think he probably beats out Vince Williams and honestly, Williams was a base defense liability. I get it.

He just gets pushed around, bounced around too much for my liking. Hope he can correct it. To me, better pick than Jarvis, but not a homerun. Of course, I did not like Dennard would be a homerun either. In fact, very few sure things left at this point and IF someone can teach him to play with a little more ***, athletically, he is the goods.

I do not hate the pick, but it just reeks of a "we'll take what's left" selection.

It's not Tombert's fault, but it's so disappointing that they did not get either Fuller or Beckham. Prior to about a week ago, I was certain one, if not both would be available to them.

****, the ravens draft an ILB. now we have to hear about how he is the next Rayray. wish they would have taken hahahahaha so we could laugh at their stupid *****.

I LOVE this pick.....I wish they would have traded down a few spots....but the way this draft was going who knows if he would have been there. ***** all you want but this is a great pick. The Steelers need speed and production on defense in the worst way.....Shazier can play the role that Timmons (who was picked in damn near the same spot 7 years ago) did his first few years in the league and split time with Vince Williams. I think this is where they were trying to go with Spence until he got hurt. Shazier is a better athlete and has crazy potential.

A LB without instincts is like a WR who cant catch.

The weakness that Shazier allegedly exhibits in his analysis above is the exact same problems we are having right now.........

Not sure how every teams have players ranked but from everything I read we could have traded back to get Shazier. Just kinda caught me off guard with this pick, lots oif names been tossed around here his was not talked about much....

The drafting since Tomlin has been the head coach is diametrically opposite of what we did under Cowher, just a coincidence I guess.

Alanzo Jackson. ;)

Perhaps they move Shaz inside...

Ok, I'm better now. All the best Ryan....

so we will have timmons and shazier inside the softest group of ilb in nfl history. that will be a nightmare teams will eat us up

Honestly, Mosley is better than Shazier. They are very similar players and we picked the one thats not as good.

Well we could have got this guy in round 2 what a reach.

Strengths Weaknesses
STRENGTHS: Rangy athlete with terrific closing acceleration and burst. Explosive first step as a blitzer to force the QB from his spot. Very good bend off the edge with momentum to fight through blocks and disrupt the pocket. Flexible ankles and flattens easily.

Uses his length well at the point of attack with good take-on strength to deliver a pop, filling hard vs. the run. Eyes are always elevated with good ball vision and anticipation. Breaks down well on the move and gets low, showing clear improvement with his tackling technique.

Smart and puts himself in correct position to make plays. Sniffs out the ball and almost always finishes when he's in the area. Never quits working to the ball and relentless in pursuit.

Team leader and uplifting teammate with strong personal and football character. Versatile skill-set to drop in coverage, blitz and cover both sidelines. Very productive career with back-to-back seasons with 115-plus tackles, including a conference-best 143 stops in 2013.

WEAKNESSES: Lean frame and lacks elite bulk. Doesn't have the body type to get too much bigger. Needs to continue to get stronger to better shed at the point of attack. Too easily engulfed when attacking the line of scrimmage.

Sometimes content throwing his shoulder and not wrapping up. Overaggressive at times in coverage and needs patient and alert. Will lose track of his assignment in man.

Needs to stay disciplined and tidy up his timing to avoid late hits and unnecessary flags. Needs to keep his composure and keep his emotions in check. History of minor injuries that have caused him to miss playing time.

Compares To: Lavonte David, Buccaneers - While he's not quite as refined or tough as David, Shazier has a similar body type and movement skills to cover a large area and be a ultra-productive tackler at the next level.

Ryan Shazier

ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS Highly productive, disruptive playmaker vs. the run and pass. Shoots gaps and plays behind the line of scrimmage (compiled 39.5 TFL the last two seasons). Agile to slip blocks. Quick, strong hands to shed. Knifes gaps and flows very well laterally. Striking tackler -- uncoils on contact. Excellent speed and range -- opens up his stride in space and really covers ground. Bends naturally. Changes direction and accelerates with ease. Explosive first step as a pass rusher -- shows the ability to dip, bend and run the arc low to the ground. Ample athleticism and flexibility to mark backs and tight ends. Led all players at the combine with a 42-inch vertical jump and blazed a sub-4.4 40 time at his pro day. Four-down utility. Arrow is pointing up.

WEAKNESSES Lacks ideal size and bulk. Still developing eyes and instincts -- will diagnose and trigger more quickly down the road. Gets caught in traffic or engulfed by larger blockers when he hesitates to step downhill. Prone to overaggressiveness -- occasionally overruns plays or loses cutback contain. Could stand to improve his eyes, awareness, anticipation and reactions as a zone defender. Took some time to acclimate before making an impact.

Ok, I'm better now. All the best Ryan....

I am with you...welcome to the the black & gold Ryan. 2 years in a row I have wanted a corner in first round. I do realize our D revolves around pressure on the qb,I am a little shocked at the pick.

Honestly, Mosley is better than Shazier. They are very similar players and we picked the one thats not as good.

Mosley is a walking injury and isn't nearly the athlete Shazier is. I'm thrilled the Ravens took him.

so we will have timmons and shazier inside the softest group of ilb in nfl history. that will be a nightmare teams will eat us up

I'm hoping we just made our Patrick Willis/Navarro Bowman combo pick...I'm claiming it, God.

if we HAD to have a LB, then why not Kony Ealy?
if we HAD to have a Buckeye, then why not Bradley Roby?

this pick sucks

I would not be surprised if we took a qb in round 2, but only if it is a reach . I hope our first rounder turns out to be a steal and the one we had last year but I can't help having a wtf for our last two first rounders.
