Tomlin had an extensive coaching resume prior to the Vikings all of which he showed promise or excelled at apparently. To assume the Steelers only looked at one sample size and determined from that he should be hired shows how limited your knowledge is of what goes on in a hiring process.
His resume was kinda thin when he was hired. Viking's DC for one season where his defense had the unique distinction of being #1 against the run and dead last #32 against the pass. Almost 20 years later and he's back to being dead last in pass defense.
It's curious that our best DB's have to come from other teams.
Not to mention its a known fact that certain positions are commodities in this league DBs being one of them along with QB and OL...meaning its immensely hard to evaluate the talent of players in those positions more so then any of the other positions. As with any position its a crap shoot, but for those three specific positions the turnover rates are typically the highest. Once you get talent at those positions you typically dont move off of them until you feel the tires have fallen off (or their value between what you think you can pay and what they feel they are worth becomes irreconcilable) which is why the Steelers end up with them so late in their careers.
