Fine enough. He was hired because of the Rooney Rule and he stays because of the Rooney Rule. At the time, the coaching search was narrowed down to Tomlin and Ron Rivera, both minorities, so it certainly looks that way. Although time has proven that Tomlin was the better choice of the two. Owned.

We've been doing that here for a long time to show that calling people "racist" is played out and meaningless, but do continue. If you want to find the racist go look in the mirror. You just don't like it when a white person is legitimately critical of a black person.

Let's see, the defense is I think dead last 32nd against the pass and 30th overall, that's pretty bad when you're The League's Highest Paid Defense. Most of the players on defense are black, the head coach is black, the DC is black, and 5 of the 6 defensive assistants are black.
So either:
1. The players and coaches listed above aren't very good at their jobs.
2. It's all T.J. Watt's fault since he's about the only white guy left to blame. In fairness, he's not playing up to the level of his paycheck.
3. Scoreboards are racist.
I'll go with #1.

Bummer when facts and statistics collide with your world view.

Clearly you havent been reading my posts if you think this is how I feel...either that or you have selective memory. I basically said everything you just said highlighted concerning Tomlin not even three posts ago so clearly youre assuming. In addition, No one has called for the firing of Teryl Austin more then I have. Check my posts. Stop assuming so much.

I don't think Burg is racist, but very frustrated. I don't think Kap is a target of any comments about race, but he is also frustrated, and not comfortable with the race angle. I hope you both - and any others - are good to each other going forward. I have learned to value both of you as posters here, and look forward to much more from both of you.

Agree but firing Austin wouldn't do any good since Tomlin runs the defense. Keith Butler said as much when he retired. Three different DC's in the last ten years yet the D still has the same problems.
 
99.9% of steeler fans didn't care Tomlinwas black when he was winning and 99 9% don't care he is black now that he is losing.
We just want to win. Championships not 9 games.
Sports is the great equalizer. Don't care what color or nationality you are, just win.
 
I still think the answer is simple. Rooney thinks Tomlin is the best guy for the job. He sees a guy that doesn't lose teams. He seems, overall, to relate well to players. Rooney looks around and sees hotshots get hired and a lot peter out.

I think he's wrong. I'm not quite sure how he balances the lack of success against that. But I don't think race or records or the Rooney rule have anything to do with it.

Weidl spotted scouting Carnell Tate today. They're gonna trade all their picks for WR2, not get a QB and run this garbage back in 2026 with Rodgers. I like Rodgers, but we need a franchise QB and a new coach. NE got both and is laughing at us.
 
The idea that it’s a racist thing or having to do with the Rooney Rule is a reach in my opinion.

Many black coaches have been fired and not a peep about race.
And that’s the way it should be.
Who knows how many were hired because of the Rooney Rule. Maybe none.
I wish we could just drop the race thing.

January and February 2025, several Black NFL coaches were fired, including :

Jerod Mayo (New England Patriots) and Antonio Pierce (Las Vegas Raiders). Mayo was fired after just one season, while Pierce was dismissed after a single full season.
Here are some of the other Black NFL head coaches who have been fired:
  • Brian Flores: Was fired by the Miami Dolphins in 2022 despite leading the team to back-to-back winning seasons.
  • Lovie Smith: The Houston Texans fired Smith after just one season in 2023. He previously coached the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
  • David Culley: The Texans also fired Culley in 2022 after one season.
  • Jim Caldwell: The Detroit Lions fired Caldwell in 2017 after four seasons and two playoff appearances.
  • Hue Jackson: Was fired by the Cleveland Browns in 2018 with a 3-36-1 record.
  • Todd Bowles: The New York Jets fired Bowles in 2019. He currently coaches the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
  • Vance Joseph: Was fired by the Denver Broncos in 2019.
  • Steve Wilks: The Arizona Cardinals fired Wilks after one season in 2019.
  • Marvin Lewis: Was fired by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2019 after 16 seasons.
  • Romeo Crennel: Was fired twice after just one season.

My belief is that Art has the mindset of everyone else outside of Pittsburgh…that Mike is a damn good coach who maybe has been dealt a bad hand.

And that is all there is to it.

It’s not about reneging on the Rooney Rule.
It’s not about him being afraid to be labeled a racist.
It’s not about lining his pockets.

Hopefully this story about Art becoming impatient and frustrated is a sign.
I believe Art wants nothing more than to hold up the Lombardi in the locker room like his dad and grandfather did before him.
 
I think with Art it’s simple! We got our guy and we’re lucky to have him and you can’t have Mike.
I think Art is petrified of having to go through the process of interviewing and hiring the right coach again.
As far as the Rooney Rule…. That’s merely a rule put in place that makes it mandatory to interview a minority candidate. It does not state that the team must hire a minority candidate, just interview said candidate.
Art believes in his heart that he’s got the correct coach. He says as much by being satisfied enough by just not having losing seasons and being in the hunt for a playoff spot.
Although playoff spots in the NFL have become like the NHL. Seven out of sixteen teams qualify from each conference. Not that big a deal anymore.
Tim Rooney said as much last year when he said “as long as the team is above the mean”. There it is!
If Tomlin can win nine, ten games he’s just fine in Art’s eyes. They look around at the other teams that continue with losing seasons. What they fail to recognize are the up and coming teams every year.
The Lions have now become dominant, the Niners when not loaded with injuries are a force, the Rams have resurfaced, the Broncos and Pats have rebuilt, the Bucs have rebuilt, the Chargers have rebuilt.
The Steelers remain what they have been for the past dozen years. Stagnant, predictable, unimaginative, overrated, out coached, and really develop very few young players. Case in point, Benton, JPJ, Broderick Jones, Roman Wilson.
Tomlin to hide his inability to develop young players would prefer to ancquire aging veterans, castoffs easily traded for or signed.
Art I’m afraid just keeps buying in and signing the checks.
Hopefully the son Dan has a different approach and will want to forge his own path.

There’s no Drake Maye in the 2026 class. Also, don’t let Tomlin draft another QB.

Tate’s #1 on any other team in the country.

I can agree with most of your points with the exception of the thing about the two white coaches.

It wasn’t a problem because he was Chuck Noll.
When you win four Super Bowls you can stay as long as you please.

Btw …Noll did win 2 playoff games during his last 10 seasons. Tomlin is approaching a 10 year drought not having won a playoff game since 2016.
Noll knew his coaching career had run its course . Tomlins career has also ran its course but unfortunately his ego is too big.

Cowher was very successful in the latter part of his career winning a Super Bowl. I don’t know how you came to the conclusion he wasn’t.
Strange that Tomlin won a Super Bowl with most of Cowhers players.

Both Noll and Cowher are in the HOF.

I’d add Eli and maybe Flacco to that list. Peyton in 2015 was mid. McMahon wasn’t a star, and Brady was a glorified game manager in 2001.

Frankly I thought Cowher was marginal but apparently we're at a place where winning a Super Bowl gets you in the HOF.
If The Chin got in then Shades gets in. Although the sooner he retires the less tarnished his rep will be.
I've pointed out before that Marty Schottenheimer is the only eligible head coach with 200 wins not in the HOF due to his lack of playoff success.
