Get Excited If You Want the Steelers to Select Malik Willis in 1st Round On Thursday Night

Are you saying that there haven’t been people who get seriously bent out of shape over draft picks and won’t if the Steelers draft Willis?
The only reason I would get upset is that I feel like there are bigger needs to address that could make the Steelers better RIGHT NOW. Malik Willis isn't going to do that as a rookie. Drafting him at 20 would be bad enough, trading draft capital to move up to get him would be an epic failure. Just my opinion.

If Willis was to become a star franchise QB, selecting him at 20 (or 10 for that matter) would be one of, if not the best, Steelers draft picks of all time.

It’s not what I would do, but I will certainly reserve judgment if it’s what the Steelers (or any other team) decide to do.

Willis hasn't shown enough to be a franchise QB. Too many question marks. You really don't want to take a player at 20 that has three to four question marks if not more out of the gates.

Brady, Brees and Wilson hadn’t either when they were drafted.

Brady and Brees weren't first round selections. So in that manner they were drafted were their value was. Wilson had over 70 percent accuracy so he showed well.

Exactly, and those were all mistakes by NFL teams, as was Marino lasting until the late first round, as was Roethlisberger and Mahommes lasting until the 10th pick. If the Steelers had drafted Brady instead of Casey Hampton in the first round they would have been almost unanimously ridiculed, it doesn’t mean they would have been wrong. Value, like the rest of the draft, is a huge guess.

While every team has examples of 1st rounds busts, there are far more cases of players that matched expectations, playing on a high level for years.
Your 1st round pick should not be a "huge guess."

You have to go by what value they are showing. If there is question marks you have to account for them and put them on the board correctly. You can't say well this QB is very athletic so we should ignore other warning signs because he just might be the one. One big knock is BigBen and Patrick are mobile QBs that scramble to pass and do it well. The more Willis passes the less accurate he is. Just reminds me of Lamar Jackson. Give me the QBs that scramble to pass. And in the process can be accurate doing so. If Willis would have transferred to a big school and his accuracy actually improved instead of regressed I would be higher on him. If he scrambled to pass I would be higher on him. If he was taller I would be higher on him.

Its all a huge guess.

Teams rarely make the best pick. Casey Hampton was a really good player, but in addition to Brady, there are likely several other players the Steelers should have drafted instead of him (in hindsight). They made a good guess, but could have done better.

Willis might be a huge guess, but one with huge upside also.

Huge upside based on what?

“Value they are showing” is subjective. Upside at the QB position is of huge value.

The most important trait of a successful QB is accuracy. In your post above you mention Brady, Brees, and Wilson, want to guess a skill they have that Willis doesn't?

I wouldn't say he's inaccurate, he can drop absolute dimes, and then has throws that are just a mess. His mechanics and footwork absolutely need work, like alot, but that'll be the deciding factor between him being a franchise guy or an RG3 and Newton who flash for a time only to trail off

Go back and read through the thread. You, like everyone, are mostly wrong about the draft. For example, every NFL team was wrong about Tom Brady not once, not twice, but five times (or more). It’s comical for anyone to get bent out of shape over a draft pick they disagree with. It’s likely they are wrong in their conviction.
Obviously the draft is an inexact science. No sh*t. You've got 32 different teams with 32 different draft boards. Aside from the first couple of picks (and sometimes not even including those), it's simply impossible for anybody to be "mostly right." So, regardless of Tom Brady being a sixth round pick yet eventually turning out to be one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time, I still have no idea what your point is.

What's comical is to think that NFL fans shouldn't have a strong opinion about whether or not they like the guy who their team takes in the first round.

I am not a fan of any of these QBs at 1st round talent and only a couple as 2nd round options

that said, if one of them is taken, I will be hoping like hell it was the right pick and he goes on winning #7 and more

I understand the hesitancy for those who don't want a QB this year. You all just want to wait for next year and draft Penn State's Sean Clifford...

Sure, but right or wrong, teams might think they can improve his accuracy.

I’m far from sold on Willis (and Pickett), but I hope they’re both still available when the Steelers pick and we find out the truth about how the Steelers rate them as prospects. Short of them drafting a punter, I’ll keep an open mind regardless of what they do.

Why should anyone who is admittedly mostly wrong about something have such a strong opinion about it that It causes annoyance or anger? Shouldn’t they keep an open mind?

I’ve liked or disliked Steelers picks and been neutral about others but I always take a wait and see attitude.

Guess I have some hesitancy believing the current staff has the ability to develop and improve anyone, but that's another subject.

If they use #1 on a QB, that player will be a Steeler, and I'll wish nothing but success for him.

I feel the same way and am not a fan of the QBs in the first round, yet will root for whoever they take. I also think many are going to want to wait for the next Ben Roethlisberger. It's going to be real tough to find another guy like him as he's one of the top 15-20 QBs of all time.

Why then, according to your logic, should anyone even bother watching the draft? Why should any Steelers fan care about who they draft or where they draft them? After all, everybody and their brother (including NFL front offices) are mostly wrong anyway...so let's all just hold hands and wait and see.

Yeah, guy, if the Steelers draft Willis with the 20th pick, or God forbid they trade up for him, I reserve the right to be upset about it. If this is comical to you, well I guess we all find amusement in different ways.

So you watch the draft for an emotional response? I watch it because I’m interested and curious.

The Steelers have had picks that I agreed with and others I didn’t, but after watching the draft for 40 years, I realize that sometimes I’m wrong. Just about every pick is somewhat “wrong” as a better player was passed up (Casey Hampton over Tom Brady).

I won’t agree with the Steelers trading up for QB either, but what if he becomes a franchise, multiple Super Bowl champion? “God forbid”? Really? Convictions are silly and yes, humorous, when you are so often wrong.

No, I watch the draft hoping that the Steelers will take players who I like and not take guys who I don't care for. But occasionally, yes, I do get emotional about a player, like when they selected Ben. That was one of my best days as a Steelers fan, because I knew he was going to be a great quarterback for many years. And, gee, I wasn't "mostly wrong" about that one at all, was I?
