I think he is. At 36 he still makes plays and is very effective. Heyward is a close second but I'm going with the Diesel.

All you need to see that he's the best was that play where he ran the dude down after 40 yards. There is no quit in that man.

NO, HE IS PLAYING THE BEST AT TIMES TO PICK UP THE SLACK FOR THE YOUNG INS, HEYWARD IS THE BEST DL.
WE DO NEED TO SEE TUITT MORE.

We do need to stop excessively using the 1-5-5 with heyward as the only down linemen and worlids lined up as a mlb and him and Kesiel blitz on the loop. As much as the 2-4-5 is played out put Heyward @ Mcullers as the DL, get Mcullers on the side in between the C @ LG, and Heyward at the edge in between the RT @ RG he stunts, and Worlids blitzes off the edge and uses his speed and leverage to get past the RT, and shazier drops and until Jarvis is back Harrison blitzes off the strong side, Troy moves into shazier's mlb spot to support the run and they get golden or will Allen at SS or move Mitchell to SS and will allen at FS.

4 man rush that should collapse the pocket and at this rate I could careless who gets the sack.

I think vs the colts Troy should be at mlb in a tampa 2 style vs luxk and shadow him every pass formation, they like us love to run out of 3 @ 4 wide sets on stretch plays, we need to start doing that but Wallace should be the LG as Foster is a heavy footed fat *** who would of been a perfect fit in the old scheme.

From an 'effort and understanding' sense, Deisel is playing better than those around him BUT from a statistical sense:

Keisel, as much as I hate to admit it, is our least productive DL right now. Playing over 60% of our defensive plays...he has just 4 total stops.

Heyward, playing on 86% of our defensive plays...has 22 stops, 3 sacks and 2 stuffs.
McLendon playing on only 35% of our plays...has 14 stops, 1 sack and 3 stuffs.

easily the best guy on the line as of now. Heyward is second. The rest have much to prove.

Which is why stats for DL are worse than useless. Heyward has more stops, stuffs and sacks however, I've seen him pushed and throw out of the way on too many occasions.

Good point,, isn't the 3-4 designed to have the linebackers make the stops.?

Keisel has played well but I think Heyward has turned the corner and is our best d-lineman.

Exactly..that's why the defense is struggling. They are getting next to nothing from the Linebackers.
In order for the 3-4 to work you need good LB'rs.
I think Spence can be good but what happens when Shazier and Jones come back?
Are they going to be a step slow and need many games to get back. Plus they weren't ever really playing at a high level anyway.
Also Moats hasn't done much but he looks a lot faster and younger than Harrison. I know James isn't in shape yet.
Seems like to many moving parts for anyone to get comfortable and cohesive.

Keisel is pressuring the passer, batting balls, getting picks, and chasing down TE's 40 yards down field. Name another D-lineman who is doing all this.

Heyward is the best.

Yep.

Heyward is their best linemen, but that in itself is a problem as he has been inconsistent, especially against the run.

Those claiming Keisel is their best defensive linemen, largely because he caught a deflected ball, need to get a clue.

There is a difference in occupying 'your assigned blocker(s)' and winning your 1 on 1. Deisel is the best at occupying his assignment as he is the most experienced and has a relentless motor. He isn't up to his own standards at winning his 1 on 1's though and THAT is why his stats matter. Through his career, he has averaged over 2.5 tackles per game. His average this year is 1.

His linemates matter too...as does the formation (3-down linemen vs 2 down linemen).

Our ENTIRE DL last year averaged 11 tackles per game (including Al Woods and Ziggy)...This year, they are averaging under 8 as a whole. Statistically speaking, Cam Thomas IS the weak link.

Our OLBs are down a bit from last year as well BUT our production from our ILBs is significantly up.

Lots of things factor into making stats 'worth a ****' but collectively we MUST maintain production (either individually or as a group). The DL is being hurt by the play of Thomas for sure though.

Bad thing with stats is they count tackles not where the tackles happen so a tackle for a short gain counts as much as one after a six yard gain.

BINGO !!!!!!!!!!!

Love Diesel, but he isn't the best. Near, but not.

Salute the nation

I say Heyward is the best we have but Keisel is not to far behind and at 36 that is amazing. I actually think McCullers in his limited snaps looks like he could be the best interior guy we have so I hope they play him more to and get Cam Thomas less and less playing time.

Keisel has been our best DL since Aaron Smith retired, by far.

The rest of these stiffs aren't even close
