James Harrison Released

James deserved better. Sorry #92.

Obviously something happened behind the scenes that led to Deebo getting cut. Still a chance he is back this week since he cleared waivers. That's not a guy I would have cut this late in the season even if you're not going to play him. He has too much knowledge about our defense and offense. Don't want that going to a potential competitor for the playoffs. Make his *** inactive if you're not going to play him and keep him around for his veteran leadership. If he was starting to become a problem then I get him being cut even if I feel you don't release someone who can help another team this late in the year.

Personally I felt like they were trying to save Deebo for the playoffs all year and as this has dragged on it just doesn't look good to have brought him back to not play him. A lot of that is Watt playing much better than what anyone could have possibly envisioned. This FO has ******* nailed the early rounds of the draft the past two seasons and restocked the cupboard.

I have seen them miscalculate plenty of end of career decisions (Woodson). I'm glad that it is apparently amiable.

Maybe this has already been posted, as I haven’t read the whole thread yet. Plenty? There’s Woodson and Vrabel. Can you name others, who we regretted letting get away? I certainly can’t. I think that’s a pretty good track record, and no one is arguing that Harrison is in that class.

Big difference between Woodson and Vrabel. Huge difference.

Woodson went on national TV during the pro bowl telecast and called out Mr. Rooney that he wasn't happy about "his contract situation ", and pouting that it should have been done well before then. Knowing that A. The Steelers don't negotiate during the season, and B. You negotiate internally, with the agent and FO. Not through the media.

Now when after playing for another team or two , it was Donohoe shooting his mouth off that " we are not the Salvation Army" when Rod's agent reaching out to the FO about coming back. So that's what ended that chance of Rod retiring a Steeler. His choice, and he let it get personal.

Vrabel situation was completely different. He was behind to guys who put up 25 sacks (Porter and Gildon), and Steelers couldn't promise him a starting job (with 2 pro bowlers already on the team). They let him test the market and NE benefited from it. No acrimonious exit. Steelers let him see what his worth was, NE paid him starter money, Pit couldn't match. Vrabel became a starter, Pitt got a comp pic.

Th ONLY player Mr. Rooney publicly regretted not signing was Franco. Everyone knows that.

But, I'm sorry, was Bud a "dominant player" in that 39-38 win against one of the worst pass offenses in the league? Did I miss something?

Bro, I was clearly talking about Harrison's decline.

There have been others but I need to search my old rusty memory banks. Was Farrior also treated badly? I'm really talking not just about letting players go before their time but also about dissing legends with a number of games left in their carreer. Franco burned for a long *** time.

I didn't know that but I'm not from Pittsburgh and not as aware.

Farrior was cut in March.

The front office always has that delicate balance of treating long-time great players well at the end of their careers with doing what's best for the team. From a PR perspective, cutting Harrison was a bad move. However, if you think of Harrison was a guy they signed prior to the season and had no history with the team, there wouldn't be a word about his release right now. Compile that with guys who think they still have it at the end of their careers and it makes the situation messy (Ward for a time being, Troy, LeBeau, Arians, Harrison, etc.).

Forget using him, maybe he could have contributed, maybe he couldn't have, I have no idea. But, they kept a 39 year old OLB with a storied career on the team for 14 games and then they cut him with 2 games left and the team set to make a deep run in the playoffs and possibly win a Super Bowl. IMO, they should have never signed him or they should have cut him long ago, but not now with a chance to earn a ring.

James Harrison is arguably the top defensive player in the team's history. If not the top he's easily in the top 3 or 5.

Top 3 or 5? Naw man Deebo is up there with the greats but he's not in the top 3 or 5. He is likely the best OLB this team has ever had. Better than Porter or Lloyd who were the best before him at the position. He's absolutely not the top defensive player in the team's history. Mean Joe Greene would have something to say about that.

James Harrison visiting Patriots

The Patriots didn’t make a waiver claim on James Harrison after the Steelers waived him on Saturday, but they might have some interest in adding him to the roster ahead of the playoffs.

According to multiple reports, Harrison is at Gillette Stadium for a visit with the team on Tuesday.

I saw this too. It sucks, but makes me think there is way more to the story (especially based on Tomlin being very evasive in his presser). I believe this goes back to Devi’s expresses unhappiness a couple weeks ago. I believe he probably forced the issue, and asked to be cut, so he could play elsewhere (based on his agent’s statement). Now he is meeting with Patriots. He probably has an axe to grind at this point. Sounds personal.

I think he knew patriots would probably pick him up and he could get his revenge vs us in the AFCC if it plays out that way.

I have no idea but my gut tells me Tomlin dissed him. Douche move.

Blount and Harrison are to separate deals. Blount actually walked out during the middle of a game. how on earth do you keep a guy that does this on your team? Harrison has been a leader on this team for a lot of years. I am sad that he is gone. I also believe he would do better that moats and chick at rushing the passer. But he was a liability in coverage. we have been dropping our backers in coverage a lot more this season.

when we resigned James back in march, their was no way of knowing that Watt would drop to us and be so good so fast. this cut was just part of the NFL.

Separate deals that are looking more and more eerily similar. On Earth, you send a message by suspending the guy for a game or two.

I guess Belichick and the Patriots felt it was in the best interest of their organization to sign Harrison. Just like they signed Blount.

Imagine that.

Bro, I was clearly talking about Harrison's decline.

OK. I don't disagree that Harrison's skills have declined.

What clearly bothers me is that one of his replacements at outside linebacker isn't half the player James once was.

James deserved better. Sorry #92.

dammed right he did

James is Top 5 in playoff QB sacks in NFL HISTORY!

Tossed out by an idiot coach on the eve of the playoffs - no respect at all for generational players like James. It's a dark stain on the whole organization.

Yinz act like Deebo had nothing to do with the decision. He pushed for it.

But let us keep stoking the dog.

stroke stroke stroke man

yeah- I heard that conversation

Tomlin: James I've decided to cut you today, right before Christmas, good luck and turn in your playbook

James: **** you you bug-eyed *****, I've got it memorized anyway and I'll take it to the Pats, win a ring for them, then retire my #92 in a Patriots uniform

Tomlin: Have a nice day, obviously

the real convo before yinz hit that pipe hard

Deebo: If I knew yinz was going to sit my non covering non being able to set the edge ***, I would have never signed my two year contract.

Tomlin: obviously

Deebo: So you still aren't going to play me?

Tomlin: obviously

Deebo: **** being a team player, me me me me I love me some me

Tomlin: obviously

Deebo: I am sure some team out there would appreciate my one trick pony

Tomlin: Then let's give them a early xmas present, cut.

Sets edge better and rushes better than the one first round draft pick. He wanted more time, probably balked at Christmas day game he wasn't going to play in. And Tomlin said fine **** it.

What really burns me is as I think of Tomlin dissing deebo is that this is the guy who thought that Vick would be a good fit for this team. What a wasted effort that was. But sure, cut a legend who is begging to contribute.
