Kicker Josh Scobee traded to STEELERS!

From NFL.com

The Pittsburgh Steelers found a veteran kicker to help plug the hole caused by injuries.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports the Steelers acquired long-time Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Josh Scobee, per a source informed of the deal.

The Steelers were in dire straights in the kicking game, especially considering Heinz Field is one of the most difficult stadiums to kick at.

Garrett Hartley left this weekend's game with a hamstring injury just two weeks after being signed following Shaun Suisham's season-ending ACL tear.

Scobee had been in Jacksonville his entire career, dating back to 2004. Entering his 12th NFL season, the 33-year-old booter has converted 235 of 291 field goals (80.8 percent). For his career Scobee has converted 26 of 42 from 50-plus yards (61.9 percent), but went just 3 of 6 in 2014 from that distance.

The trade means rookie kicker Jason Myers won the job in Jacksonville. The first-year player from Marist has gone 4 of 5, including a long of 55 yards in the preseason.

The Steelers reportedly will send back a late-round pick to the Jags.

Scobee was below average last year

and the year before that he was 4/5 at 50+

He was coming off his worst season in six years, converting 20 of 26 field goals, or 76.9 percent. But only three of those misses were from less than 50 yards, and two were blocked.

In the three prior seasons, though, he converted at 92.0, 89.3 and 92.0 percent. He also is strong on kickoffs. Last season, he had 54 touchbacks compared to Suisham’s 20.

Jags new guy couldn't make an Arena League roster last year

Jaguars' move to trade Josh Scobee is risky

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars began the day with one of the league’s most experienced and dependable kickers. By lunchtime they had turned the job over to a player who has never appeared in an NFL game and made only 63.2 percent of his field goal attempts in college.

It’s a risky move that won’t be popular and could come back to cost them.

The Jaguars have averaged just 15.7 points per game over the past three seasons (last in the NFL), but the one dependable player has been Josh Scobee, who is in his 12th season. He holds franchise records for points (1,022) and field goals made (235). More importantly, he had a field goal percentage of 80.7 (tied for the team record) and made 26 field goals of 50 or more yards in his career – including four of the longest in team history.

The record 59-yarder was a game-winner on the final play of a 31-28 victory over Indianapolis in 2010.

That experience, dependability and clutch performance is something that Jason Myers doesn’t yet have. In fact, he was not particularly accurate at Marist College, making only 63.2 percent of his field goal attempts (24 of 38). He made just 3 of 9 field goal attempts from 40-49 yards and the longest field goal he made in college was a school-record 49 yarder.

Myers didn’t kick anywhere professionally in 2013 but spent time with Arizona and San Jose in the Arena Football League in 2014.

??? We could have waited for Scobee to be cut and saved a draft pick, or signed Jay Feeley who did not miss a kick in the try outs. Now we lost a draft pick.

Scobee was below average last year, and played in an easy warm weathered stadium to kick. Yes he's solid but as Harley showed solid can be found for cheap at the kicker spot.

The Steelers have how much cap space now assigned to kickers?

Why compete with other teams or give him a choice when we can guarantee his services thru a trade

Scobee is being traded for a late round pick. Probably 6 or 7.

For kickers, we're on the hook for Scobee's salary since he was traded. All $3.425M
Sushi's $3.665 doesn't count against the cap since he's on IR
Hartley has a cap of $585k, so if he's cut, he doesn't cost us anything but an injury settlement.

Rumor has it, Ben Rothlisbergher has been practicing the "famed" drop kick version, of field goals. I would think in a two piont conversion attempt, that might actually be leagal. Save it for when its a real need, just to styretch the rules a little.......... now that the che*triots aren't cheating anymore..........

Be funny if they pulled that off against the Pats**.

Jags new guy couldn't make an Arena League roster last year

It should just be S.O.P. for the Steelers to sign Pitt's kicker any time they have a good one.

JAX is getting a 6th round pick for Scobee. Could be a good deal if he restructures and has a good year.

I would have signed a veteran to hold us over and then waited until the market was flooded with kickers after the final cut. I value kickers, but the Steelers have traded a lot of future draft picks recently and don't have much depth on their roster.

Sixth rounder per rotoworld

Again, I wasn't kidding...

Great move! Kevin Colbert showing yet again he's at the top of his game. Nice to see a tried and tested veteran locked up to handle kicking duties.

Read up a little on Scobee, what high regard he was held in Jacksonville. You could argue he was the most popular guy on the team. He was steady as they come for years, had a bit of a down season, but he's heads and tails better than what the Steelers would've been able to pick up off the scrap heap. If we can get our defense on track, this team could be making noise this season. Why jeopardize things with a below the line kicker? He's better on kickoffs than anyone we've had for years. And I was fine with the Hartley signing, but how often does something like that happen? We got lucky once with Hartley, we lost both him and Suisham to injury, I think Colbert was not going to mess around this time. So he went out and got a guy they felt comfortable with. A proven kicker at Heinz. Sounds like they're giving up a sixth and restructuring his contract. What more do you want from a GM?

Sounds like you let the Jags fans turn you into one of them - I bet you're wearing a Jags jersey at work right now, aren't you?

Hell no. Not ever. I enjoy listening to their banter; but, some of the dudes are open-minded enough to have a conversation...

And you owe me two shots of Fireball for that statement!!!

I wish we would have gotten Anger as well cause I'd definitely buy an Anger jersey.

Here is why I like the move... I mean there are lots of reasons, but the one I like the most about it is he kicks the ball into the endzone... cause you know what has looked worse than the D this preseason... the kick coverage...

and as for his poor stats last season... the Jags had a horrible oline... they let up 3 blocked kicks to lead the NFL last year... the guy was under constant pressure and had to rush... he is overall better than sushi by far

Truth

this too

Career FG % on kicks 50+.

Josh Scobee: 61.9%
Shaun Suisham: 31.3%

This man was a true hero and legend in Jacksonville. Welcome to the 'Burgh, it's time to make 'em for a team that's - hopefully - going places.

You've got to feel for Jags fans, if the kicker carries this much weight in your heart...

Again, welcome to Pittsburgh Josh, we're thrilled to have you!!

Looks like Jags are paying some of his salary too

Just got confirmation Josh Scobee will be paid his full $3.45 million salary in 2015. Steelers and Jags worked out deal that both will pay

What's even funnier is that our PUNTER, Berry, kicked two kick-offs; one from the 50 (because of penalty) and one from the 35. Both travelled 65 yards before touching the ground. That's NOT the good part:

He made both kicks with a 3 step drop (3 yards) instead of the usual 9-12 yard run-up a regular kicker uses. THAT is a freakin leg!
