I know we've only played two preseason games; but, I have a feeling young Landry is doing much to secure his future in the NFL with the Steelers.

I recently read that we can still put him on the PS.

Perhaps the chopping block would be better option???

I am usually a wait and see guy, but outside a strong arm, I see nothing with the kid that makes me think NFL BACKUP much less potential starter... we need to pick a decently high QB and groom him as the backup and potentially future starter in case Ben doesn't have a long career left. Jones should not make the team. its better to risk one backup than keep a guy who has a low ceiling and no real chance to help this year in any way in a valuable roster spot

his decision making is sloooooow and so is his release. Not impressed with him, at all. He can take up a roster spot THIS YEAR as a clipboard monitor and I hope he never snaps one ball in a game this year. It's really getting about that time to find a suitable replacement for #7.

Thing is, basically zero mid-to-late-round QBs pan out. The best QB taken after the third since the mid-2000s was, you guessed it, Bruce Gradkowski. The Colts rolling over Peyton to Luck basically never happens. 99 times of 100, you trade for an established guy, or you follow the cycle and suck long enough until you find a top-10 pick who pans out.

No. Tombert is smarter than anyone here. He was a good pick.

I quick looked back at the 2013 NFL draft. Man, the guys the Steelers passed on in taking Landry Jones in the 4th. Hall of Famers many of them.

Look, he stinks right now, maybe always will. But I don't have a problem with them taking the chance at that point.

I don't know who they should have picked in the 4th round last year, but he is the most vanilla pick they could have made. Hell, I would have picked AJ McCarren this draft, who has a lot more upside than Jones will ever have. Sorry, didn't like the pick then and still cringe.

No, look, that's fine. But it was a 4th rounder. They had backups, one of which played with Sammy Baugh and the other who would get hurt at an Easter egg hunt. It was a chance they took, and it appears bad right now. Again, though, it was just a 4th.

Better QB's will be cut by other teams by the time preseason is over.
Tombert will keep Jones however so that it doesn't look like they made a mistake.

As mistakes go, how is a 4th rounder a mistake? The whole draft is taking chances, but by the 4th round? C'mon.

He was a 3rd rounder. He was Louis Nix. Or Bruce Ellington. Or Justin Ellis. Or Pierre Desir. Or Crockett Gilmore. Or a plethora of other potential draft picks at or below pick #83 this year. All of which could improve depth at DB or DL or OL or TE. All the position we sit around and complain about when the starters leave and things start to look a little shaky.

Those shaky 3rd and 4th quarters of pre-season games is EXACTLY what people complain about when this regime throws away 3rd-5th round picks on frivolous picks like QB and special teamers.

thanks for making me laugh. Pretty funny comparisons and very true. They had to address the QB situation, that's for sure. Gradkowski pick-up was a good move and I liked that they saw the need to draft a young QB, but. . .

I thought they traded this years 3rd to move into the 3rd for Thomas, Jones was their regular 4th. Hell, I don't remember, I'm old.

No but I think being the 3rd string clipboard holder is as good as he will ever get. Should Ben and Bruce both get hurt then Tombert is going looking for Tyler Palko.

Maybe. But that is the chance you take when drafting.

Your logic is what gets me. If Ben gets hurt, they are done regardless. Nobody has a franchise guy at 2nd string, let alone 3rd string. It is about winning Super Bowls. The Patriots ain't winning it without Brady, nor the Broncos without Manning and so on.

Evidently I must remember this incorrectly as well according to Del. Hey, I get your point, but we didn't lose a pick on Jones. That's revisionist history if you believe that. We moved up to grab a SS that looks like will be the heir to Polamalu. If he has a great career with the steelers, it was worth dropping a future 3rd rounder to grab a starter in the 4th.

I get that but after two preseasons of seeing him against other teams' 2nd and 3rd stringers I see no indication that he will ever be more than the practice squad clipboard holder. He sucks.

cut his ***. first cuts.
if Ben and Gradkowski get hurt, the season is over any way. It's not like the other teams in the league will bum rush his agent to get sign this guy.

He will make the 53 man or practice squad because he's a 4th rd pick. Colbert's track record with late round picks remains abysmal.

We should have taken a punter for that 4th rd pick.

get rid of him, 2 QB's are enough

Fixed it for ya!

Oddly enough those, who a year ago, were saying we should trade Ben cause LJ was our future sure are quiet!

Trade Mike Adams to Atlanta for TJ Yates and cut Jones.

I have defended Jones, but he seems to have regressed to me and certainly has not seemed to have improved. It is what it is though, he is just a 3rd string QB. I do not think the FO had dreams of him replacing Ben, but I do think they thought he could be a backup. A 4th round pick for a backup QB is not bad, but this time it did not pan out. Look at how many teams dont even have a good starting QB much less a quality backup and we are bitching about a 4th round 3rd string QB. Whether Jones gets cut or makes the team will not effect the team all that much. Sure we could have drafted someone else to add depth at that spot, but who knows if they would have worked out either. What is killing the team is missing on guys like Jarvis, Hood, Adams, and Woodley going downhill quickly. Also 3rd-4th rounders have not been panning out (aside from WR). This years draft has a lot of potential so far as shazier, tuitt, archer, and bryant have all at least shown something. Next year we should focus on CB, DL, and maybe OLB. I am not sold whatsoever on jarvis, but maybe moats/worilds can do something?
