Mason O'h Mason could he bring GOLD

that is a reasonable amount for good backup who has shown he can win as a starter. I really really don't get the Mason hate. Just for spite I want him to play lights out and win the starting job just to piss everyone off.

My sentiments almost exactly.
I supported Mason big time and was looking forward to him being the starter going into next season.
But the fact that we acquired Mitch and drafted Pickett #1 pretty much confirms that the MR "haters" had it right after all.

I've jumped on the Mitch bandwagon.

Should MR be named the starter, (which he wont) no one will have a chance to be pissed off. Their heads would explode before that happens!! lol
I will be in a state of shock.

He got ripped off by having the team get his two replacements. Never really got respect, including from Ben.

I hope he goes somewhere and raises eyebrows.

I think the Mason hate has as much to do with the investment in him as it does his play. I think Steelers fans resent using a 3rd round pick on him. Had he been a 6th round pick, he’d probably be more popular with Steelers fans.

no he would still suck

A lot feel the back up QB is the best on the team until they get a chance to play and prove otherwise.

Mason played and didn't take advantage of his opportunities.............................

Mitch will light it up

Agree. He is not a bad QB but he is not a starting caliber QB . The fact we wasted a 3rd round pick is the entire problem most have with him. He seems like a good guy but the Steelers narrative of him being the QB in waiting ticked me and many fans I know off. I am fine with him as a depth player but the charade he is in the mix for starting is more Tomlin dumb ****.

The tie against the Lions at home cemented his non-future with the Steelers...
That was his "audition" for his career and how the Steelers would handle the off-season at that position.....

Who knows, if he performed well in that game....maybe we dont sign Mitch or even draft Pickett with the number one..
I certainly believe we wouldn't of done both...

Meh I wouldn’t be completely flabbergasted if Mason wins the job but I would not expect it either… the Steelers would be in a bad spot if he won it then was an ufa next year…

If they think Mitch and Rudolph are close and Pickett is good enough to be a backup they have to deal Rudolph… thats why they drafted a seventh rounder too… if Haskins were still with us it would be easier, but still Barring injury or him making a huge leap forward, Rudolph wont be on the roster by seasons end… he will get dealt at some point

I simply wouldn't have brought Ben back and used that horrible offensive system with that horrible OL. I would have just started Mason. Our management blew it last year on the QB front.....but hey. We mad the playoffs and had another one losing season.

I mostly agree with this. Just doesn't seem a lot of money for an experienced backup QB especially with the team not being up against the cap. Like I said previously they can move him if the return is appropriate but I wouldn't move him just to free up money unless they plan on doing something with said money. Remember the Oline is still transitioning. So there is an element of will all three QBs make it through the season healthy? Depleting depth IMO must come with a valid reason.
Here's a list of the highest-paid NFL backup QBs in 2021, in millions:

1) Taysom Hill $12.16
2) Andy Dalton $10.0
3) Case Keenum $6.0
4) Tyrod Taylor $5.32
5) Jacoby Brissett $5.0
6) Nick Foles (third-string) $4.0
7) Joe Flacco $3.5
8) Marcus Mariota $3.5
9) Mason Rudolph $3.0
10) CJ Beathard $2.86

Hill is a unique player. Other decent backups are in the $5-6 million range. Only the Bears grossly overpaid their backups last year, and it didn't work out too well for them, as they finished 6-11.

Pickett's contract will be in the neighborhood of $3.5 million, a nice bargain for a quality backup (assuming Trubisky wins the starting job). Rudolph's $5 million contract for 2022 was reasonable enough before the draft, but the acquisition of Pickett has changed the dynamic. Instead of third-string depth, I'd rather see the Steelers unload MR's salary, and get some draft capital in return.

I get takes like this. And if they move him for a pick I won't lose sleep.

But in the NFL your two most important positions are QB and whatever position involves your best pass rusher. So depleting depth on one of those important positions could come back and bite them in the ***. I just hope if they do move him it is a value move and not a late round pick that is just saving a buck.

No. No, No...It is the fact that he couldn't play better than Duck Hodges when it counted, but the Steelers have held onto him for FAR too long...aka Landry Jones. He is dead weight, a ****** backup QB, that the Steelers can't seem to let go of as if admitting that drafting him in the 3rd round was a mistake. And it WAS a mistake.

I don't hate mason, but he is not a good qb. If i remember right the D bailed him out with pick 6's in a couple games and i think one game he was playing poorly and connected on a miracle long pass to eventually win. Mason is slow and his arm is concerning to me. He seems to throw a decent deep ball, but every intermediate pass seems to float and is an int waiting to happen. He has not improved alot the last couple years so i don't think he has much upside. The problem with a trade is every team knows he is expendable so that will drive the value down

Agree. I think they'll wait and see if 1) one of our QB's gets hurt in preseason and 2) if another team's backup QB gets hurt in preseason. I think he's a decent backup but not starting caliber. Gets traded before the season starts.

I think their QB Pickett has been their choice for awhile so I'd bet he was going to be picked if he was their.

The Steelers signed Trubisky AND used their first pick on a QB. They clearly have serious doubts about Rudolph. Prior to this season, Ben was the starter and there were much bigger priorities than replacing a back-up like Rudolph. That’s why they’ve held on to him.

Yeah. But it is still stupid. He was a 3rd rounder for crying out loud. Imagine the gnashing of teeth if Pickett doesn't pan out.

I never understood the Rudolph hate, either. On one hand Tomlin sucks, Fitchner and Canada sucked or sucks, Rooney sucks. Shouldn't the players therefore be given somewhat of a pass?

Is there truly widespread hate for Mason Rudolph? I always took at as those who think Rudolph is way better than he is perceive those that recognize he is nothing more than a backup "hate" him. That's not the case at all, we just know he isn't a future starter.

He absolutely played better than Hodges when he wasn't playing concussed. I don't get this narrative at all and the numbers don't bear it out.

Then there is that Lion performance. What was his excuse for that monstrosity?

There is no excuse for that game. OL & OC both very questionable but still no excuse to not move the ball. Definately NOT comparing Rudy to BEN but Ben would have won that game easily, Duck Hodges would not have.

Definately a poor grade for someone who was the H'eir aparent.
