It seems Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is fairly confident that Mitchell Trubisky is going to win the starting quarterback job this summer. Mason Rudolph on the other hand feels pretty confident that he’s going to beat out his new competition. He said as much Friday on The Rich Eisen Show.

At the end of the day, the only person that matters is Tomlin. And the Steelers didn’t go out and acquire Trubisky within hours of the free agent tampering period for nothing. Especially considering that what they did was unheard of for them. Don’t believe us? Here is what Tomlin had to say when Steelers.com reporter Missi Matthews posed the question about whether there would be a quarterback competition in training camp:

“There certainly will be competition, there is competition at all positions,” Tomlin told Matthews. “We would be naïve to not take that approach. That being said, you know we were excited about acquiring Mitch [Trubisky]. We do believe he has the talents to win the job, but he’s going to have to win it. He’s going to face some competition in the form of Mason Rudolph, and Dwayne Haskins, so I’m looking forward to watching those guys sort themselves out, along with the other positions.”

Now Tomlin believes that Trubisky has the talent to win the job. We can either assume he’s under playing his hand, or he thinks more of Rudolph than the rest of us. We will go with the under playing option. From the outside, it seems like a tough position for Tomlin. He has to still be neutral, even if he believes there is no chance for Rudolph, because there is a chance Trubisky comes in and is bad. Or he could get injured and Rudolph would be forced into action. Now that all goes out the window if the Steelers select a quarterback in the first round. Rudolph might demand a trade at that point and smoothing that out might not be as easy for Tomlin.

Like Kevin Colbert, Mike Tomlin says adding Mitch Trubisky in free agency doesn’t keep them from drafting a QB.

He called the last week of Pro Days he attended “Quarterback Week.”

That comment paired with the fact that Tomlin spent all of last week wining and dining potential quarterback selections makes it pretty obvious that they’re willing to pull the trigger on one at any time. Tomlin traveled from Pittsburgh to Virginia, to Mississippi, to Cincinnati, to eat and watch quarterback Pro Days. Even the day he left Pittsburgh, he started the day by watching Kenny Pickett at Pitt.

If the Steelers draft a quarterback it will be interesting to how Dwayne Haskins feels at the bottom of the depth chart.
