No losing seasons

You act as if the "folding chairs" were created overnight without due provocation. They have not; if's been 7 years since we've had a playoff victory and many more since we actually competed for a legit title other than "winning season" which means nothing. It's been 13 years since we competed for a SB, 2011. It's 2024. Please relax if we don't all just suddenly buy into Mediocre's plan. He's been dormant since 2008. It's 2024. Don't act like some of us being hesitant to buy in is so outrageous.
The very definition of the folding chair.

Look, I understand being hesitant. But man, have a little fun with it. They are 9-3. I was at the game in Philly in '08 when they gave up about 100 sacks to the Eagles. In that moment I wouldn't have given them much of a chance to win anything. So who knows?

I understand, but that group just won a Super Bowl 3 years prior, was in back to back AFCCG in 04-05.
I am having fun with it, it's great they're in first place, but if we go 14-3 and lose the first playoff game, that's a failure IMO.

Not that OL group. It's almost amazing they won with that group. In '05 they had Hartings, Faneca and Simmons starting in the middle of the line. In '08 they had Hartwig, Stapleton and Kemoateu. Holy shiit. When they played the Eagles that year, they couldn't even compete with the OL, and they had the Ravens coming to Pittsburgh the next week. It looked bleak.

I do agree it will be a failure. My point is I won't let the possibility of that destroy the fun here in the moment.

Kinda feeling like this season has 12-5/1-1 written all over it
Which would still be a failure imo, just a baby step forward failure of sorts

I think a 12 win season would also lead to division winner. That would give us an equal shot at a 2 win playoff birth, or more. At the beginning of the season everyone felt a playoff win would satisfy them. I didn’t, because I think it should be 2 PO wins, so I’m a little greedy and justfully so. Due to the loooooooooooooooooooooooooooong dry spell, why not set the expectations a little higher instead of just settling.

There was rejoicing in the streets, a warmth fell over everyone and a smile appeared on the baby’s face.

PS

Thanks Fiji Mariner, you have great perspective and humor along the way, appreciate it.

How about we address the fact you don't know how a two minute offense works? I bet if we did a list of dumb/stupid comments you've made on here there would be minimum 50 comments listed.
Making fun of others for dumb comments, I'll just leave it there. :pound:

I think this year is the best chance they have of actually winning a playoff game in years.

So with that, I am optimistic. BUT will never get past the post season disappointments we have had to endure all these years.

That will always cause me to temper my expectations with this team no matter what the regular season record.
Most human beings would have to consider our utter disappointment in the post season and beyond; you wouldn't be human with it. We are approaching 8 years without a win in the playoffs. That nothing to sneeze at. 8 long years. 1-2, no biggie, dips happen. 3? OK. 8? 8 years sans a win? That's long enough to call it a trend. And it's on the watch of "the greatest head coach ever. "Really? And who have we lost to so far this year?

The dismal Colts with Flacco at QB. OK. The 5-7 Cowboys (up until recently were 3-7 having beat the Giants and barley the Commanders to up their wins to 5 games, and the "Browns.") Sounds mysteriously like losing to to 2-10 Pats and Cards of last year. Tomlin went on about the team not being prepared to battle vs the Browns. Gee, whose job was that? Maybe the guy who has been fingered by players for not having a team that practices with alacrity?

The win against the Bungholes gave me hope. I saw a lot of things offensively that made me think the Steelers could be a contender for the big game.

Even though the D struggled a bit, the O finally looked like an NFL team passing over the middle, etc.

Who can recall these years?

2010, loss to GB in the SB. That hurt, because we had that game. Rogers only SB W.
2011, loss to Denver.
2014, loss to Ravens.
2015, loss to Denver.
2016, loss to Pats
2017, loss to Jags
2020, loss to Browns
2021 loss to KC
2023 loss to Bills.

That's a lot of Mediocre losses. Painful to recall. Many of them were preventable.

Yes, some hope, but against a really bad D.

I agree the entire thing seemed improbable at the time. But that was before we had been beaten to death with Mediocre Mike faults and insecurities (and losing streak against playoff teams). Our past since 2011 has not been very optimistic. And no playoff win for 7 years. And yet he acts like he's the top coach of the world.

I am well aware that there has been no playoff win in 7 years. That has no bearing whatsoever on this year. If what happened in the past mattered, the Steelers would never have won anything because the 40 some years of futility before the '74 season would have prevented success.

While this is true, and as fans of the team we all wear those lwoB repuS goggles, but if they go one and done again, getting crushed in the process?
Make no mistake, I'm pulling for this team, as I've done for 60 years now, but recent history dictates we shouldn't be expecting a parade anytime soon.

Then why do they bother to keep coach records?

The ole Gunner used to say..." the more you lose....the closer you come to winning"...
If we stay healthy at key positions....I think we are beyond being close this season....
IMHO

If we manage to win a playoff game this season, you’ll be bitching about winning only 1 in 9 years.

Then if we win another next season you’ll be bitching about only 2 in 10.
You’ve set yourself up for quite a few years where you’ll be able to b i t c h.
