Not too early: what to do at QB?

It's not too early. We need a qb. Fields is a #2. Russ sucks. Tomlin doesn't " develop " players. If we draft a qb he will be on his own. Tomlin will find another qb that is fading. That's how he runs the team.
We saw Fraudlin's "attempt" at developing a QB with Pickett 3 years ago, and let's just say the efforts were not all that successful. He met with him every morning for an hour, what all was covered or reviewed we can only guess. My guess is some classic Tomlin quips were covered. Can you imagine meeting daily ever morning to hear his classic quips? What wasted time.

quip

noun

ˈkwip

Synonyms of quip
: a clever usually taunting remark : gibe
: a witty or funny observation or response usually made on the spur of the moment

2
: quibble, equivocation

3
: something strange, droll, curious, or eccentric : oddity

I'm with you on the Fields chance of development; I just don't see it. He's 5 years into his journey with no signs of improvement. He's an athlete but not a QB. They are 2 different things. But I also don't believe in Trevor Lawrence, what is he waiting on? He was supposed to be the most can't-miss QB super star but what has he done? I just don't see it. I mean, he's "OK" at QB but not much more. He's around top 20 maybe. He was supposed to be this amazing QB prospect. Didn't happen.

I'm not sold on Lawrence at all, but would like to see what he could do in a different situation, though being coached by Tomlin probably isn't what he needs.

It hasn't been all bad, as he was actually one of the best QBs in the league during the second half of the 2022 season, looking like he turned the corner, but hasn't been the same since.

He's had some injuries and the Jaguars have become one of the symbols of dysfunction in the league along with the Browns and Jets.

A change of scenery could do him some good, but he's going to have to be willing to take less money to get an opportunity somewhere else.

Wouldn't it be something if Pete got more out of Russ than Fraudlin has? More evidence of piss poor coaching coming home to roost. And at another year older. I wonder what Art would have to say then? More "I'm glad he's the head coach of our team?"
I am surenit would give you a small Woody

Except for the first 6 games as a Steeler where he improved his decision making and improved his TD/INT ratio, his completion %, his QB rating...He even improved on his rushing TD's. But you're right. Other than improving on all those things, he has shown no sign of improvement, what so ever. What a bum.

I just do not have the optimism that some do as it relates to Fields improving enough to be the long-term answer at QB.

Given the Steelers QB situation, I think it's just blind hope from fans more than anything else

I'm fine with Fields being the QB next season, as long as the Steelers don't overcommit on the contract. There's a "chance" he could significantly improve, but I wouldn't expect it.

The Steelers QB options for next year are just limited, especially with it looking like a weak QB draft.

I would look into maybe trading for someone like Trevor Lawrence, who I think still has a better chance of developing into a franchise QB than Fields does, but that contract would need to be restructured.
Why would Jax trade him? Especially THIS year? There's no prospect to replace him with, they just hired a coach that had Baker Mayfield put up career numbers as his OC, and it's not like they've surrounded him with elite or even good talent.

Maybe we should try to trade for Josh Allen, I mean he can't make it beyond the AFCCG, so Buff is prob looking to unload him...he really has regressed in his last game

And doing all the improving on those things, that team, with Fields, wasn't good enough to beat ANY of the playoff teams with any sort of regularity. They remained a "so so" team at best. They lost to the likes of the 2024-2025 Dallas and Colts. They were some real trailblazers. Congratulations for all the "improving" done by Fields. He was lightening in a bottle.

Oh I forgot it was Fields who let the Cowboys drive down the field and score on 4th and goal from the 4. Yup, Justin allowed the Cowboys to drive 70 yards in 4 and a half minutes right after he took his team down on a 12 play scoring drive, ending in a Muth TD pass from Fields... Seriously you can't be THIS obtuse can you?

The same thing for the Colts game, do you even watch the games? Fields was 22-34 for 312 yards, 1 TD no INT, while also rushing for 55 yards on 10 carries and 2 TD's. You can say what you want. But we were only in that game BECAUSE of Fields. The Defense was the let down (and a blatantly missed holding call on Watt as Flacco threw a TD pass), allowing 27 points to a Flacco led Colts team...

And correct me if I'm wrong, you picked out the ONLY losses we had with Fields as the starting QB, so how was he not good enough to beat ANY of the playoff teams with any sort of regularity? Do you even read the **** that you post before you click "paste"?

The Colts were not great, but they were not terrible, they were in the playoff race right up until the end. The Cowboys were a different team when we faced them, and they still had a healthy Dak. I am not sold on Fields, but he did improve, and he did beat the Chargers even if they were not at full strength. I am ok with giving him a chance IF they redesign the scheme just a bit to allow him to play to his strengths and not try and make him something he isn't.

Yea, sure, give him a try. And with him will come the 10-win season, a playoff spot and guaranteed 1st-round loss. Yet another year without dreams of a win in the postseason. But, oh hell, go through the motions, it's a Tomlin team. No real dreams of advancing in the playoffs, or threatening a Super Bowl birth, just same old, same old with Fraudlin mis-managing his way to futility. But he won't post a losing season. Yay! Go team! Everyone can be happy. Rooney has already shown that a non-losing season is all we collectively really care about. Bring back the whole gang: Bring back the OC, the DC, the OL coach...heck, will we even bring back the strength and conditioning coach? Might as well. We know Fraudlin is back. And sure, we will take a respectable 10-3 record and wreck it to 10-7. Why not? It's the Fraudlin way.

What we know, Tomlin is not getting fired, Smith will return, Austin will return. What we also know, we pick 21st in the NFL draft. There's two QB's worth a top pick in the draft, and none of the top teams are trading away their pick for us to have a shot at them. That leaves middle round projects (aka Kenny Pickett 2.0), or the FA field. That consists of Kirk Cousins coming off a season in which he never looked like himself (and this is still speculation that the Falcons will cut him), Sam Darnold (more than likely will get an offer from Minnesota), Jameis Winston, Zach Wilson, Jacoby Brissette, Trey Lance, Tyler Heinicke, Drew Lock, Joe Flacco, Andy Dalton, Carson Wentz... do you get the idea? Wilson and Fields know the offense as it is, and even if they tweak it, it's still going to be the same verbiage, same concepts. And Russell is already 36 years old, he's not going to get better. The same things that plagued him in Denver plagued him here, and staring at his stats don't tell the whole story. So that Leaves Fields. We have to have a starting QB next year, Fields is the best option.

He's the best option because he's boom or bust. If he balls out and keeps improving, we've found a QB that we can have for several years as he's only 25. And if he doesn't, and reverts back to the Chicago version, well then we get our losing season, and a much better draft pick.

NO ONE on this board is suggesting that by signing Justin Fields to be the starting QB for the Pittsburgh Steelers is going to guarantee us a super bowl run. No, we are simply saying he is the best option available to us RIGHT NOW.

He is enough of a red zone threat thanks to his legs for me to want him back, while we find a future QB

Fields stinks, he's a backup QB, nuff said. If you think Fields would win any of the games vs. playoff quality teams, I guess you need help in evaluation. We would lose those games almost every time. You can cite uncalled holding penalties all you want, bu that is just fandom crap running wild. Fact is, the Steelers would lose most games vs. legit playoff teams. If you can't see that, you need help. I bet in your world Fraudlin is an awesome coach.

But make no mistake, Fields in only get us as far as Fraudlin teams usually get us: at home after our 1st playoff game. That's it.

No **** Sherlock. You are a broken record.

As others said if he booms you get a hot commodity to trade for picks and if he busts you are closer to a higher pick. Either way, there's no real shot at getting to the SB as long as Tomlin is here, but this way you can build up for the future, in 4 years we should have a better QB in a rookie contract, good cap space and hopefully a few draft additions with a solidified Oline.

No one maybe guaranteeing a Super Bowl contending team, and boy, they'd be right about that. Fields is just not that good. Face reality. And with Fraudlin calling the shots, we have zero chance of contending for a Super Bowl. Hey, he can toss out some Tomlin quips but that ain't gonna get us anywhere except to a trip to the "interesting quips hall of fame" ceremony Tomlin must think exists. "Hey I'll say some odd and weird things that will grab everyone's attention. Will I change or alter any staff members? No. No need to."

Where in ANY of my posts have I said anything POSATIVE about Tomlin? Quick, look it up, you won't ******* find it. If we lose those games GOOD!!!! Then we aren't picking in the bottom half of the first round like we do every ******* year. Seriously, did you read anything I wrote or did you just hit quote and respond in full retard?

Dude, just go away. You can't comprehend that Tomlin is the coach of the Steelers and is going to remain so, most likely for the next 2-3 years as he is never going to get fired. No matter how much we all want him to. This was a discussion about the QB position in it's CURRENT state, with the CURRENT option...not a Tomlin thread

I know people who are mentally challenged. I do not use your words to label others. You should be ashamed.

Those people are disabled.
You, on the other hand, are a retard.
Spoken for truth. Those disabled don’t deserve any criticism and only good wishes. They definitely don’t classify as retarded. They.

If you knew parents of a mentally challenged child, you would not be laughing.

If I was GM I would do this. Sign a veteran free agent like Marcus Mariota or Jacoby Brissett. (Guessing Russ wants too much $)
Then sign a young QB with upside. Fields, Trey Lance, Mac Jones, Kyle Trask or even Zach Wilson. My preference is in that order. Then draft a guy day 2 or early day 3. Dart, McCord, or Rourke are my current favorites in that range.

Open competition. Let the best player win.

He explained it twatwaffle. Perhaps if you read it repetitively you might eventually grasp it.
