Not too early: what to do at QB?

I think they will bring Justin Back. He could easily be a bridge or turn all pro.

Coach Tomlin needs to recognize that a QB guru coach needs to be brought in.

I don’t see anything special going to happen as long as O’l Groundhog Day is in charge.

A drafted QB will have a very low chance of succeeding here. A Developement thing

If I was GM I would do this. Sign a veteran free agent like Marcus Mariota or Jacoby Brissett. (Guessing Russ wants too much $)
Then sign a young QB with upside. Fields, Trey Lance, Mac Jones, Kyle Trask or even Zach Wilson. My preference is in that order. Then draft a guy day 2 or early day 3. Dart, McCord, or Rourke are my current favorites in that range.

Open competition. Let the best player win.
You lost me on signing Zack Wilson, I mean that guy sucks worse than anyone I have seen play. I'd take any of the 4 QBs you listed before him.

As I stated my preference was in that order with Zach being last. My reasoning is Wilson has had a season learning behind a very good quarterback coach in Sean Payton. That’s why I give Wilson a tire kick if the others are gone.
Also, my all around logic is having 1 veteran that has been around and seen a lot of NFL football. A guy who might be able to pull off a late career rebirth but at the very least knows how to be a professional whether he wins the job or not. Looking for a Rich Gannon or Kurt Warner with the Cards.
The Fields, Lance, Jones, Trask, Wilson players are a guy who is still young, under 28, that still have upside and talent. This is trying to find a Sam Darnold or Steve Young type career revitalization.
And lastly we draft a guy to develop. No pressure on him as I’m not going round one on him and he’s going to have a few years under contract so if we hit above the draft pick can be a backup for all we care because we hit with another player. Or if we don’t hit above this kid can still get his opportunity in a season or two.

But I don’t just hand anyone the starting job. If the rookie wins so be it. I give everyone a fair chance.

I'm leaning toward Fields on a short-term deal and take my chances on a QB in 2026.
This is my opinion do not waste a 1st or second day pick on this qb draft class. Get Fields on an expensive but with outs contract. If he does not appear to be the guy it's rare to get two weak classes in a row. Russ is more of the same. Can win enough to get the 20th to 15th draft pick. Bout it.

That sounds reasonable. But I just don't have any faith in Zack becoming a good player is all. He just looks like complete garbage.

Fair enough. But the same could have been said about Sam Darnold who had to endure playing for a professional New York football team. I think I can give those poor souls a second chance just because of that fact alone lol

Apparently, Tomlin is the only pro HC at the Sr Bowl...weird. That's what they said on The Drive.

Who would you sign if you were the GM.

Russ Wilson
Justin Fields
Aaron Rodgers

None of them.

If I had to had to Fields.

AR is done and Wilson isn’t far behind.

If we had a real coaching staff I would sign Wilson if it was reasonable. With our current situation I would sign Fields. There is no scenario where I would pick Rodgers. With how we play offense I dont think there will be a 15 million difference between fields and Wilson. On a side not I wouldnt want to dump a ton of money on fields either. Without knowing the contract scenarios its tough to form a proper opinion.

Why would Jax trade him? Especially THIS year? There's no prospect to replace him with, they just hired a coach that had Baker Mayfield put up career numbers as his OC, and it's not like they've surrounded him with elite or even good talent.

Maybe we should try to trade for Josh Allen, I mean he can't make it beyond the AFCCG, so Buff is prob looking to unload him...he really has regressed in his last game

Yeah, because Lawrence and Allen are totally comparable QBs in the league right now.

Through four seasons, Lawrence has had issues avoiding injury and has yet to show a ton when he has been able to avoid it.

Honestly, Mayfield probably showed more with the Browns than Lawrence has to this point.

I didn't imply the Jaguars would be likely to trade Lawrence in 2025, but might listen to an aggressive enough offer, considering their roster needs just about everything.

They are comparable in the sense that neither are happening. The Jags literally picked their HC based on someone who could unlock the potential that Lawrence has. He flashed in '22, when they went on a streak at the end of the season to win 5 straight and made it to the divisional round of the playoffs. All with Zay Jones and Christian Kirk as their starting WR's. Again, you don't hire a HC with an offensive background, coming off a season in which his QB set career highs in almost all categories and trade away your QB you hired him for.

And with the holes on this team, we can't afford to make an aggressive offer for ANYONE. It would just put us further behind and waste the investment in the first place.

you dont even watch steeler games ,, how are we to believe you watched anything with zach wilson playing?

Rodgers shouldn't even be a consideration. He is 41 and has lost a lot. Why on earth would you even consider a guy who is retiring any day now.

If I'm the GM and these are my choices, I go with Fields. He is still young. He has not reached his ceiling yet. He showed improvement this past season even though his hands were tied from doing much in the passing game. I go with him for at least a year or two in this system and see if he continues to improve. If so, he's your guy moving forward. If not, draft someone. In fact, I look to see if any QB's fall this year or next that have potential and can sit behind Fields for a couple of years to learn.

Resign Fields. Take a clue from how Jayden Daniels has developed so quickly as a rookie and find a virtual reality program for Justin's development. Hire a real QB guru. Maybe even consider doing something abstract like having Ben come in as a QB coach. He still refers to the Steelers as "us" so he has a personal interest. I mean, all this wouldnt be necessary if we had a real HC who had a vested interest in being more than a .500 record.

Yeap, if (and I know it is a Big IF) Justin learns to throw right before the receiver gets open (read the route and time it correctly), the kid could be really good.

I mean that's what Daniels did, as a rookie! that's natural talent right there. Most QBs need time to get there, at least Justin has the physical tools to thrive, if it clicks.

One of the young QB's is going to see the trainer this off season that helped Allen in Buffalo. I said Pickett should have gone to work with him and the same goes for Fields. I am not sure why no one on the Steelers goes to work with this dude.

MONEY

Rooney supplies the cash.

Tomlin himself (no witnesses) drives to Cleveland City Library, finds “free” computer and writes note——— prints it.

“ (guru’s name) has this time slot appointment for you, no questions asked. Here is enough for 4 sessions and he will give you an assessment. Successful———- make more appointments, things will take care of themselves”

This “envelope” will be found by Justin and he best make the effort. Our friend Rock-O will visit him to be sure he is cooperating.

Yea, but long shot sometimes come through. Have you heard of Tom Brady? He was a 6th rounder who only ended up being the best QB ever. Not too shabby, 7 rings. But he's not the only long shot.

Tom Brady - 7 rings, nothing else needs said. The greatest QB to ever play.
Nick Foles - won a ring.
Kurt Warner - A nobody no one wanted, SBs and records.
Geno Smith
Brock Purdy - very last player drafted, not doing too bad.
Dak Prescott - not bad for a 4th rounder
Tony Romo
Warren Moon - Had to go to Canada to even play his first several year, ended up scoring leader in NFL for a few years.
Russ Wilson - won a SB, made it to another where he was ripped off. Not a 1st rounder.
Roger Staubach
Drew Brees - 2nd rounder who owns many records and a SB.
Doug Flutie - not bad for being drafted in the 11th round.
Ryan Fitzpatrick - Not bad for a 7th rounder.
