Thread is about the PA primary. Candidate here (who lost) is in WV. But then that's different from the Democratic Socialists running for office how?

Living 2,000 miles away, I haven't followed PA politics much, other than hearing the primary there will be a bellwether, so to speak, of the general in November. Will be interesting to be sure.

Despite Senate primary win, Pa. Republicans 'hit the panic button' over Lou Barletta | Friday Morning Coffee

By John L. Micek jmicek@pennlive.com
Good Friday Morning, Fellow Seekers.
In a regular political universe, beating your opponent by 27 percentage points should be a cause for celebration.

Not so for newly minted GOP U.S. Senate nominee Lou Barletta, who bested primary challenger Jim Christiana by exactly that margin in this Tuesday's Republican primary.

Pennsylvania Republicans are "hitting the panic button" over Barletta's candidacy, fearing that the underfunded and largely unknown Christiana's clear over-performance on Tuesday night is a warning shot for this fall's campaign against Democratic incumbent U.S. Bob Casey.

In a startling piece published Thursday, The Washington Examiner ran down the problems with Barletta's candidacy, with observers blasting the ex-Hazleton mayor's "lackadaisical, disorganized effort" during the spring campaign.

"The sense is, nobody knows what the f**k he's doing," a Republican strategist with Pennsylvania ties told the newspaper. "He's not really working it hard. It's a sad thing, because people like Lou."

The same strategist added that "Casey should be vulnerable. But Lou is just like a ghost."

Barletta beat Christiana, a state lawmaker from Beaver County, 63-37 percent on Tuesday, according to unofficial tallies posted by the Pennsylvania Department of State.

Barletta treated the spring campaign like a walk-off, repeatedly refusing to debate Christiana, and launching just one television ad, attacking Casey, not his primary opponent.

That ad attacked Casey as a do-nothing senator. But a PennLive analysis of Barletta's Capitol Hill voting record revealed he hadn't done much better during his eight years in Congress.

Barletta's campaign bristled at suggestions that the candidate wasn't taking the race seriously.

"Lou Barletta is working his a** off to beat Bob Casey in November," Jon Anzur, Barletta's deputy campaign manager, told the newspaper. "Last quarter, Lou raised $1.3 million, the most he's ever raised and among the most of any Senate challenger in the country. This week, Lou secured the Republican nomination for the Senate with 63 percent of the vote in his first statewide race. And nowhere in America is the president is more engaged in helping the Republican candidate win than he is with helping Lou Barletta in Pennsylvania."

Barletta was an early supporter of President Donald Trump, helping to run his Pennsylvania campaign and serving on the White House's transition team. The weekend before the primary, Trump repaid the favor with a robo-call on Barletta's behalf.

Ron,

Lou Barletta has a good chance of beating that empty suit, live off of daddy, political career, Bob Casey.
Christianna had no chance.

Lou is popular in eastern PA, and Dems are flipping.

I feel good about this one.

Dems are hard to beat in a statewide race. No one has been able to beat Casey yet even though he's a do-nothing Senator, plus there are some bad feelings in the west that Barletta and Wagner both ignored us in the primary. "**** all the hillbillies west of the Susquehana, we can win without you." Mmmkay, let's see how that works in November. I thing both of them will have a hard time marshaling the necessary voter enthusiasm. Sen. Casey has already proven that you can be from coal country, vote against the coal industry, and as long as you're a Democrat from eastern PA it's all good and you have a job for life.

Yeah, but they said Trump had no chance of winning PA.

Wagner sort of markets himself as a governor version of Trump but as i said to another politico on election night, "Trump is still likable and funny but Wagner is not" and he was forced to think about it and say, "Yeah, you're right."

The coal industry was dead in eastern PA long before Casey came along. True in the past, but that was before the days of sanctuary cities and border walls. I believe the Trump effect may change things in PA and other rust belt states.
