The Pens just wanted to start golfing early this year. I doubt they could win a 7 game series against anyone at this point.

No way in hell... Unless the other team wanted to play golf more and then it's on like Donkey Kong. Fights, delay of game, half the team in the box, whatever it takes to lose.

The Pens are going to be this way for a long time guys. The baby Pens are dead last in the Atlantic division and only three other teams have less points in the entire league. The Pens Goalies have a 2.93 GAA so there is no hop there for a future net minder to replace Jarry. Hell, if you go to their website, they can't even spell the word "Defensemen" correctly, it's spelled "defencemen" in several areas of the website.

I fault the management for letting this happen but I have always said there is something off with this team and the way they go about the "business" of preparing for games. How many times have we seen this over the years? How many times have they "tuned out" a coach and they ended up getting fired? Playing uninspired and losing in the first round?
They could make up for it the last 16 years but now that the skills are on the down hill slide they can't just show up and be the big bad Penguins and win....
Teams don't fear them anymore.
I'd assume retaining The Core puts butts in seats even if the team is mediocre and that's what this team was built to do. I'm sure they'll ride that train a couple more years. It was not built to be a serious playoff caliber team. There's flashes of it occasionally but they simply can't sustain it.

Quoted for truth. Years of trading draft picks to acquire players to win now has left both clubs bereft of talent. It's been a great run with these guys, but if I am Pens management, I move Malkin, Letang, Rust, Dumo, Petry, and even Crosby if he wants. I know the Big three are still playing pretty well, but with their salaries, plus guys like Rust Guentzel, Rakell, etc I don't know if you can add enough talent with the cap to make them Cup Contenders again.
I agree but this organization has made it evident they will not part with Sid, Letang and Malkin. They’re stuck with those 3.
They’re going to have to try to build around them.
I think Sullivan gets canned. Edmonton hires them as their next HC cause they’re young and fast. A canadian team wins the cup.

All the Penguins had to do to make the playoffs (and somehow avoid Boston in the first round), even after all of the ups and downs and tumult of this season, was beat the two worst teams in the league. And they couldn't win at home on Fan Appreciation Night...against a team that had lost 11 of its last 12 games by at least 2 goals. Amazing.

Pittsburgh sports does like to hang onto faces for nostalgic reasons. The Steelers are the same with some players. I’m ok with the core 3 retiring as Pens on their terms.

I stopped saying it but here goes again. They need a true top goalie. Jarry is good but he is not a game-changer. They need someone that can take over games and be a brick wall back there. They haven't had that in years. If they don't invest in a top netminder, there is no sense in keeping the top 3 together as they did.
Most sports outside of the nfl consist of journeymen. Every nhl team have fresh faces yearly. Very seldom do you see consistency in the nhl, nba, mlb as you do in the nfl

I was fine with the big 2 being retained. With Malk Crosby Rust Rakell Guentzel Zucker you are offensive minded enough. Should have let letang go and get some actual defenders with some grit. Just my opinion.
Letang needs to retire. He has the stroke history. Too much personal issues this season as well.
I’m fine with them being retained, only because it’s rare to see guys stay with one franchise. Lemieux and Ovechkin/Backstrom are the only three I can think of recently who have played with one team. I think the Sedin twins did as well.
