Penguins 22-23

It could be worse....The Pens by far have the oldest roster in the league, but they have 20M in cap space for next season. The second oldest team...capitals... 5M in cap space. It is interesting to see how teams spend on Offense versus defense. Here are the top 5 oldest rosters

Now see who they hire to start the rebuild. I read FSG’s statement, but I can’t fathom that they honestly believe this team has a cup run left in it. They need to move on from several players, and not just bottom six guys. Some bad contracts up and down the lineup, and I’m not sure they can overcome that.
I don't think its that enormous of a task...

First and foremost---Get a Top 5.... or hell even top 10 goalie in here ...

Who do you get? David Rittich or Frederik Andersen maybe, but the pond isn't ripe with many big fish. Many of these goalies are pushing 40. If you want a top 10 goalie, you need to trade for one and even then, with the no trade or no movement clauses on contracts, it really limits the pool. What top goal tender wants to come to a small market town on an aging team who missed the playoffs and are trending downward?

I dont believe that Jarry is 6'2"?!?
Dont under estimate what it means to play with Crosby and in a small but fantastic hockey market ,,,,

Good to see that ownership doesn't f around with bad management.

I am hoping we have really good European and Russian scouts.
To me---if you don't end up with a top 5 pick for a few years in a row....that's were your scouts can get you back in the race fairly quickly.

They did fine when they had Botteril(sp?)
Think he went to Buffalo though.

I know it's under new ownership, but ownership hired bad management in the first place. Did anyone think Hextall was going to be good?

I've been saying this for a few years. Jarry is OK but he is not a game-changer. They stuck with the Big 3 and now they need to get a brick wall in the net. If they don't do that, it will continue to be more of the same. Jarry is a good No. 2 netminder.

More of the same...

In his season debut at the American Hockey League level, goaltender Joel Blomqvist made 23 saves on 27 shots for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a 4-0 road loss to the Hartford Wolf Pack at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. on Friday.

Trickling down.
So WBS is struggling. I think Wheeling has also had a bad season

I remember hearing they hired him and going WTF really?

Jarry is good enough when they play solid in front of him. He is no Shisterkin or Vasilevski but they had so many defensive turnovers and break downs this year it's not all his fault IMO.

The Penguins already had their goalie of the future in their system, Filip Gustavsson. But they pissed him (and Ian Cole) away to acquire Derek Brassard, who produced a grand total of 23 points in 54 games and was a -5 in parts of two seasons on solid teams (right after the Cup years) where the Penguins finished with 100 points.

One of the worst trades in the history of the organization.

If him and Fleury win the cup. That’ll be salt in the wound with what that trade amounted to for the Pens.

That Brassard trade has really did a number on the Pens organization

Cole was always in Sullivans dog house. I remember getting pissed at him for his play on the ice alot. That trade was done back when Murray was still playing solid wasn't he? Sometimes without a crystal ball you just never know.

I was referring to Filip who is coming into his own in MN.

But getting rid of Cole and Reaves who was also becoming a solid 4th liner at the time.

It just seems like that 2018 trade really affected the team

No, not all his fault but they still need a much better No. 1 goalie. Jarry is a free agent also so it's not a given he comes back although he says he wants to.

I liked Cole. The guy is a two-time champion with a career +144. He's been a plus player on every team he's been. No idea how he got in Sullivan's doghouse.

And Gustavsson was only 19 years old at the time of the trade. No reason to give him away at that stage of his development, no matter what the Penguins' goaltending looked like at the NHL level.

Didnt Cole get into some bad stuff awhile back? Screwing around with some sportscaster chic? I remember thinking that maybe Sullivan knew he was a POS as a person and didnt want him around.

Reeves was another head scratcher. I think Rutherford brought him in to deal with the other teams beating on the Pens and I don't think Sullivan likes to play that way. I think some of this downslide is the result of Sullivans stubbornness too...

He was initially brought in as an enforcer but that month before the Brassard debacle, he was really catching on as 4th line guy.

I think if that Brassard trade didn’t happen. The Pens would’ve been an eastern conference final team
