Penguins Offseason, free agency, moves around the league, all in one thread!

I think those are depth moves Sarge. I still resign Dooms. Sheary, I'm fine with him leaving or staying. Though I don't want to break the bank on him.

Moving Kessel is ******* dumb. Remember grabbing guys like Hossa, and Iginla? ******* studs right? They **** the bed on this team. I'd take Kessel's actual production over chasing another pipe-dream questionmark. I don't even move Kessel for Duchene. Why? Because Duchene isn't close to being Conn Smythe caliber yet...

Hossa put up 10 points in 12 regular season games and 26 points in 20 playoff games, including 12 goals (2 game winners). Hossa was a stud and everyone wanted him back.

He bounced to Detroit.
Iginla? I think the 2013 Pens were so overloaded with talent they expected to win by just showing up. And if it wasn't for Sid's broken jaw....who knows. I would've taken Iginla back if he wanted

As for Kessel. You don't move him.
He likes the role player position and he's clutch when needed. The Pens need him around. I fail to see any drama residing to him. The Toronto media painted him a villian

I'd move him if it meant getting Duchene.

I don't think so

Stupid PPG

Penguins GM Rutherford doesn’t expect to trade Phil Kessel

Earlier this week, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette columnist Ron Cook wrote about the possibility of the Penguins eventually trading Phil Kessel.

The column raised some eyebrows because, after all, the Penguins have won back-to-back Stanley Cups, and Kessel has been a big contributor during both championship runs.

On Thursday, Penguins GM Jim Rutherford was asked about the possibility of trading his all-star winger, and he didn’t sound too convinced about the possibility of moving him.

“Phil Kessel‘s an important part of the Penguins,” Rutherford said in a radio interview with 93.7 The Fan, per the Pittsburgh Tribune. “He gets a lot of points. He scores big goals. He sets up big goals. The more impact players that you have, like we have, the better chance you have of winning.

“He’s an important part. I don’t want to sit here and say that a certain player’s not going to get traded at some point in his career. I mean, Phil already did. But that’s not something that I foresee happening right now.”

Obviously, no one expected Rutherford to come out and admit he’d be willing to trade the 29-year-old away, but he didn’t really dodge the question either.

If the team wants to trade him away, they have plenty of time to do so, as Kessel has five years left on his contract at a cap hit of $6.8 million, which might be a steal given the amount of money star players have signed for this off-season.

The Toronto media did not paint him as a villain.

He was a *****.
He bitched and whined in Boston, so they offloaded him to the Loafs. He promised maturity but was a selfish whiny *****, again.

With the Pens he is below Sid, Shrek, letang, and Murray/fleury, so he just seems less bitchy.

Add in a couple productive playoffs, and you all love her.

But Phyllis is a *****. She freaked on the bench in the Ottawa series.

So angry.

Hate on Phil all ya want. Back to back champion

Lol

Nope. I am an anti-Loaf fan, so I chuckled when they got Bostons damaged goods.
But even they deserved better than his shitshow.
It is good that his hockey has been good for the Pens.
But in a exact opposition to how folks can feel compassion for a good guy like Joe Thomas stuck in **** situation with the stains, it is possible to have great disdain towards a ***** in a good situation.

I didn't. I never felt like he played well in the finals. He might have been dinged up. Still, the only player to go to 3 straight finals on 3 different teams!

I wouldn't trust Cook's opinion. But the word is, Kessel and Sully don't get along. Tocchet was the arbitrator. With him gone, things may go down hill.

Penguins are ‘prepared to go to arbitration’ with Sheary, Dumoulin

At the moment, both are heading toward salary arbitration hearings, with Dumoulin’s scheduled for July 24 while Sheary is slated for Aug. 4.

Both situations are pretty tricky, so it’s not too surprising that GM Jim Rutherford admitted to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Jason Mackey that the hearings will “probably” happen.

“We’re prepared to go to arbitration,” Rutherford said.

There’s still time – especially for Sheary – yet both hearings could be especially interesting considering the variety of different ways you can break down their value.

Dumoulin: strong defense, weak offense (so far)

Hockey Buzz’s Ryan Wilson and FanRag’s Dave Holcomb both went pretty deep on what Dumoulin might be worth, as did Matt Cane. The disparity is pretty interesting; Cane puts Dumoulin at about a $2.5 million value, Wilson proposes a five-year, $15M deal, and Holcomb wonders if Dumoulin could be worth as much as $5 million per season.

Dumoulin’s reps might point to Olli Maatta as a handy comparable, although that comparison falls flat from simpler (i.e. Dumoulin not producing as much offense) and fancier perspectives. Sometimes it’s pretty plain to see HERO charts smiling upon one player more than the other.

Still, both Dumoulin’s prominent use and his strong at-home work indicate that he’s worth a pretty penny, however many he’d receive.

While he generated 16 and 15 points during the past two regular season runs, Dumoulin saw solid ice time in both 2015-16 and 2016-17. That was especially true during the playoffs, as he averaged 21:31 per night in the 2016 run and 21:59 TOI during this last postseason.

Considering the waves of injuries the Penguins endured during the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs in particular, Dumoulin really showed his importance to the team.

Now, will those details matter as much as weaker counting stats? We’d find out if Dumoulin’s hearing actually took place.

Sheary’s sheer luck

Somewhat amusingly, Conor Sheary is almost in the opposite situation.

If you look at his simple stats, Sheary could argue for a pretty nice little raise.

While his 2015-16 numbers are modest, he really took advantage of his time alongside Sidney Crosby this past season, scoring a remarkable 23 goals and 53 points … in just 61 regular-season games. That would be about 71 points over an 82-game span.

His postseason numbers weren’t as great (seven points in 22 contests after 10 in the previous run), but one could imagine a solid argument made on the 25-year-old’s behalf considering that 23-goal output.

Of course, the Crosby effect was significant. Sheary spent 697 of his 836 even-strength minutes with Crosby, while only spending 139 minutes without him last season. To his credit, Hockey Analysis’s numbers reveal that Sheary at least maintained decent possession numbers in those rare moments without number 87, but the sample size is too small to refute claims that Sheary was Jonathan Cheechoo to Crosby’s Joe Thornton.

***

Ultimately, it’s tough to tell how much each player is worth, which might explain why arbitration hearings may just need to happen. Such hearings would be fascinating, though both the players and the Penguins would likely experience some serious nerves.

One can argue that being on Sid's line made Sheary the player he is.

I think Sheary signs just based on that alone. I'd like to see Sheary and Dumo back. Very slow off-season. I think the Pens will be competitive as ever though

IMO..Dumoulin is a better defensive defensemen than Matta...and its not even close..

Matta ---"statically" has better offensive numbers than Dumoulin...but that's only because Matta either choses, or the game play is for him to take it deep, more than any of our defensemen..

I believe if Dumoulin was afforded that opportunity, or choose to go deep more, his offensive stats would be very similar to Matta's.

Apple to Apples---Number 8 should make more than number 3

If pushed to make a choice, pay Dumo, let Sheary walk.

Agreed

Man I'm sure as hell trying to line up a Pens game and a Steelers game this year in the same weekend. I've yet to visit either new stadium or arena. I've been to the igloo had front row seats and 3 rivers.
