Penguins Offseason, free agency, moves around the league, all in one thread!

I won't believe anything till I see it - we might not even hear of trades till tomorrow

Bob McKenzie ✔ @TSNBobMcKenzie
Net effect, tho, is many GMs are champing at bit to start making deals again when "freeze" is lifted at 8 a.m. ET Thursday. Handcuffs off.

Yeah but what did his brother Doug have to say?

so much for that

Pierre LeBrun ✔ @PierreVLeBrun
Asked GM GM about Nate Schmidt, says he's not trading any of his young players. Keeping Schmidt.

The NHL is considering charging teams with a minor penalty if they bring forth an unsuccessful coaches' challenge.

The idea is to provide an incentive to coaches to not bother contesting borderline calls and instead only use the coaches challenge for what they feel were clear mistakes. As it is an unsuccessful coaches challenge does cost you your timeout, but given that the game has to stop to review the call, you kind of get that timeout anyways. At the same time, this will likely lead to scenarios where fans and teams alike get very upset when their team gives up a goal they felt wasn't fair, then they lose the coaches challenge and have to kill a penalty on top of that.

Panerin goes to Columbus, for Brandon Saad. That is a shocker. Saadsy probably happy to be back in Chicago.

Yeah, pretty shocking. Panarin is young and pretty solid talent. I thought he'd be a blackhawk for a good portion of his career

Pens trade Sundqvist and the 31st pick to St. Louis for Reaves and the 51st pick.

I think this is a terrible trade. They gave up a first-round pick and a solid prospect for a goon who won't score 10 points all season.

Not Sundqvist!!! ****!

Reaves had a solid game against the Pens this past season. Big bodied and skated pretty good that game. Rutherford did want some toughness

Toughness didn't win them Stanley Cups, talent did. The lineup just got a little worse tonight. You don't trade a top pick and prospect for a fourth-line enforcer.

Very true. Unless the organization feels some of the guys down on WBS can contribute this season.
If anybody is ready I'd like to think Jean Sebastian-Dea and Sprong are ready to contribute.

I'm ok for a fourth line enforcer. Gives the Pens something to try early in the season. Still a lot of actual hockey skill on the team.
Shame it was Sundqvist traded though

They don't need a goon. Plus, you just give up a couple of nice assets that could be later used to trade for a guy with some skill. I get that they don't want Crosby and Malkin to get beat up, but this dude is not going to prevent that.

No no. I agree with your saying.

This was a bad move by the FO. I'm trying to wrap my head around it too.

Why in the **** did the Pens just trade their 1st round pick tonight?

Now if it's a later pick or they just sign the guy off the street, I'm not exactly happy with the shift of philosophy, but at least could understand the better value.

“We are going to try to add a player or two that maybe we can have more protection in our lineup,” Rutherford said. “That's not that easy because (coach Mike Sullivan) likes to roll four lines and you've got to plug a guy in that can play on a regular basis, but hopefully that's what we can do.”

I just don't get how a 3rd/4th liner demands a first-round pick. Sure they take longer to make an impact in hockey, but still you figure if they take a guy there and he carries pretty good trade value later on. I also don't understand a philosophy shift away from what worked and back to what didn't work. Again, this move will not stop guys from taking shots on their star players.

Eh

I don't think the Pens will shift too far from their "Just Play" philosophy. I think as long as Sullivan has the speed & skill they'll continue to use it.

If they want to add a bit of physicality. I think a 3rd or 4th line can get away with it. As long as it fits into the game. I was not a fan of the retaliation penalties the team used to get under Bylsma/Johnston. That 2013 conference final still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Cause the Pens tried to be the "tougher" team imo.

Sullivan changed the culture for the better. Back to back championships to show for. I'll give him some slack if they want to "experiment" at the beginning of the season

The Pens pick again at #51 I believe. I'm good

Just a high price to pay for an experiment, especially when that prospect could have been used to help grab some defensive help close to the trade deadline.

We got our "tough guy"

Despres for Lovejoy was bad... We won a cup
Hainsey for 2nd was bad... We won a cup
Reaves for Sundqvist + 1st is bad...

Cup?
