Penguins Offseason, free agency, moves around the league, all in one thread!

Oshie resigning with the Caps is huge. He's their best all around player, and doesn't wilt in the playoffs. He plays big in big games, and is a driving force for that team's success.

Just a splash if grit is perfect. The nonsense the pens got dealt in the playoffs needs to be addressed. They got really lucky Crosby was able to come back. This next season may be worse. Everyone will want to knock the kings off of the mountain and will resort to whatever means necessary in the playoffs. The whole new set of rules used for the playoffs vs the regular season dictates it. I fully expect dirty play to increase since nobody can beat the pens playing straight up.

In JR I trust. He just extended the life of our stars.

there's some scuttlebutt going out there that the Pens may be in play for Evander Kane. I would LOVE that move. Grit and scoring touch. Always liked the young man, but have heard he is could be trouble in the locker room.

That's the theory

Penguins spend big to get bigger, land Reaves from Blues

Pittsburgh Penguins GM Jim Rutherford said he wanted to add some snarl to protect stars such as Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. You won’t find many – if any – forces more intimidating than Ryan Reaves.

Rutherford believed that the NHL was allowing teams to take liberties with star players, particularly Crosby and Malkin. Even after winning consecutive Stanley Cups, it was clearly something important to him.

One can debate how much an enforcer such as Reaves really “deters” such behavior, especially since he won’t be on the ice with star players in most close situations. There’s little denying that he’s a fearsome fighter, with six in 2016-17 and as many as 10 in a single season.

Reaves carries a $1.125 million cap hit that expires after 2017-18.

I don't think you have to be a fighter to be fearful on the ice. Just knowing that he is out there to put your best player(s) into the boards hard is a good deterrent. That he can fight is a bonus. If he can contribute 10 goals/20 points in the season, that's a bigger bonus. All through the playoffs, I wish we had one or two bangers, now we got one. I can't fault GMJR to going after one. If we could add a banging defenseman, that could round out the team very nicely, but that may be too much to ask. They don't grow them on trees.

He's not just a goon, he can skate too. Reaves had 17 minor penalties last year, that's half as many as Malkin had.

Maybe Malkin won't feel that he has to be the team tough guy enforcer any more...

Kunitz at $ 2.8 million = 120 hits 7 goals

Reaves at $ 1.1 million = 200 hits 7 goals

Hmmm

I never thought of him as a goon. Just a tough player and will run you. Not gifted offensively, but still is a presence, If he's a cheaper and tougher version of Kunitz, I'm pleased.

Yeah, I'm ok with the trade now the more I sat on it. As stated earlier, he can skate.
I remember a game awhile back during the regular season he was doing rather well against the Pens.

I was a bit disappointed trading the first round pick away. Sundqvist was still developing, but it's not like he was making too much of
an impact.

Definitely will not change the persona of the team. Decent addition

Like Methot, the guy who got to be on the ice with Sid every shift for 7 games.

Pens have lacked toughness on D since Orpik left, and real meanness since Sammy Wilson was around.

Agent: Schultz likes Pittsburgh, but wants to be ‘rewarded’

Justin Schultz took a significant pay cut to re-sign with the Pittsburgh Penguins last year.

He doesn’t begrudge the deal he signed, as the Penguins have been a big part of turning his career around.

One assumes winning a couple of Stanley Cups has been pretty fun, too.

That being said, the 26-year-old defenseman wants a raise.

“We took a one-year, discounted deal to come back from last year and build upon what he did,” Schultz’s agent, Wade Arnott, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “The player took a lot of the risk. The player performed. Now the player should be rewarded.”

Schultz, a restricted free agent, had a career-high 51 points in 78 games last season. Those 51 points were the seventh most among NHL defensemen — just five fewer than this summer’s biggest UFA, Kevin Shattenkirk, managed.

Schultz then added 13 more points in the playoffs, as the Penguins managed to win it all without Kris Letang.

For the record, Schultz wants to stay in Pittsburgh. The question is whether the Pens can afford to keep him, or if they’d be better off selling high in a trade.

“We’ll probably have some more direction here this week with where we’re going with [a possible extension],” Arnott said. “But we’ve had some good discussions.”

that will be the theme. The players won two Cups and now wants paid. Can't blame them, as they accomplished something pretty impressive on lower salaries. There's not much more to accomplish than cashing out now. I'm sure teams will overpay to gain that SCF experience on their rosters. If there's options out there that are more cost-effective, I will not blame GMJR for letting certain guys walk. Nature of the game and the Pens are in an unique situation of "Been there, done that. Now what?"

Crosby could be a concussion away from retirement, so bringing in a guy to prevent a few hits, sounds like insurance
to prevent a premature retirement for your best player.

It's exactly why we are seeing Rutherford let the UFAs explore the open market. You can't overpay guys just because they won a title, yet that is the player's expectation. With a couple of titles in hand, no doubt most would want to cash in.

Check out the article regarding the trade. I am 100 percent with the author that it will not deter anything and he absolutely hit the nail on the head at the end.

But if the Penguins are hoping for Reaves’ presence to stop opposing players from taking liberties against their stars they are probably setting themselves up for disappointment.

All it might do is get them the occasional pound of flesh in return after the fact and whatever satisfaction that brings them.

Maybe that is all they are looking for. Maybe it is a message to the league itself.

Whatever the reason, it is something they did not need on their way to consecutive championships.

while I agree they survived their 2nd Cup without the muscle, it will get even harder and more physical the 3rd go around. Reaves is a "peacekeeper", so to speak. If he can skate and contribute with his stick, he will be a good addition to keep the head-hunters in check, as well.

We didn't need it for 2nd championship because Crosby recovered from the concussion, that might not be the case next time.
I didn't see any consequences related to hits on Penguins in 2017, when there will be a consequence for certain hits, they won't be eliminated,
but they should curtail.

there's PLENTY to stay and play for, say 3 PEAT!

Penguins, Schultz working on long-term deal

Pittsburgh is in the process of negotiating a long-term contract with defenseman Justin Schultz.

"It's early," said agent Wade Arnott. "But we've had some good, positive discussions.

I really want them to re-sign Schultz, He is very valuable. I'm hoping money is not the sole reason any of them leave, but who can blame them?

Bonino is off visiting the Habs

Nick Bonino expected to visit rival team tomorrow.

Dans Les Coulisse is now reporting that veteran forward Nick Bonino, a member of the Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins, is set to meet with the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday, and more specifically is set to meet with general manager Marc Bergevin.

Penguins interested in Matt Duchene

The Pittsburgh Penguins are one of the teams that may be trying to acquire center Matt Duchene in a trade from the Colorado Avalanche, NHL Network's Elliotte Friedman reported Tuesday on "NHL Tonight."

"I wouldn't be surprised if in a stealth way Pittsburgh is kind of interested," Friedman said. "They're a team that kind of looked at Duchene, I think, last year. We heard their name mentioned with [the Avalanche] a couple of times. I don't know if they've really exited. It wouldn't be an easy thing for Pittsburgh to do for cap purposes. … I wouldn't be surprised if Pittsburgh is still lurking, along with the [New York] Islanders."

Duchene, 26, has two years remaining on his contract, which carries a $6 million charge against the NHL salary cap, according to CapFriendly.com.

The Penguins are nearly $19 million under the $75 million cap for 2017-18, but the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions have several players about to become unrestricted free agents July 1, including center Nick Bonino, forward Chris Kunitz and defensemen Trevor Daley and Ron Hainsey.

Selected by Colorado with the third pick of the 2009 NHL Draft, Duchene has 174 goals and 244 assists in 572 NHL games.

The Avalanche reportedly put Duchene and left wing Gabriel Landeskog on the market before the 2017 NHL Trade Deadline, but kept both. General manager Joe Sakic told Altitude Sports Radio on May 9 that "there's going to be a lot of turnover" in the offseason, but Friedman suggested they might hold Duchene into next season.

Colorado was 22-56-4 this season, last in the NHL.

Money gets spent, but championships are forever. I hope they can find common ground that makes everyone happy. I'd rather see the team go down in flames during the playoffs then get picked apart in free agency. Thank God Letang will be back.

He is a big piece that will certainly be a welcomed addition. At times, I almost forget about him, which it's like adding a FA. Just hoping he is OK to play and no further damage is done to his health.
Unless the Pens pay what the going rate is for Daley, Bonino, Sheary, Schultz, Kunitz and possibly Cullen(if he doesn't retire), this team will be picked apart. Those first four guys will be coveted by teams like Nashville, Montreal, NYR, TB, Ottawa- any team that is close to put them over the top. The Rangers have $20M in cap space. Nashville lost Neal, a proven goal scorer. There are holes to fill on those teams and they are fully aware who can help and is out there. The Pens need to come close or match their offers. I expect GMJR to be quite active re-tolling this team for their 3rd run with or w/o our FAs.
