Penguins *******!

The Depres move is a bit of a head scratcher. But, at the same time, this is a new regime. It was Depres' chance to make an impact as there were supposedly no more road blocks from management. For whatever reason, it still didn't happen and he couldn't stick. Probably best for both parties to move on.

One trade too far...this take pretty much sums up my feelings too

Trade Breakdown: Pittsburgh Ships Out Simon Despres for Ben Lovejoy

The Penguins could have closed their day with the Cole/Bortuzzo swap but they decided to make one last deal before the trade deadline

Simon Despres is a Penguin no more. He will be moving on to Anaheim.

The Penguins get Ben Lovejoy in return.

I'm not a fan of the deal, at all.

Simon Despres makes 900k through next season and is still an RFA after that.

Simon Despres is 23 years old, Ben Lovejoy is 31.

Simon Despres fooled a lot of people into believing that Rob Scuderi is still a serviceable NHL defenseman. That is no easy task.

Despres was a solid skater, had solid puck skills, and had a blend of size and skill that you like to have in a defender.

Here is what the Penguins have on defense now:

Martin-Letang
Ehrhoff-Pouliot
Cole-Lovejoy-Scuderi

It is still a solid group, especially with Pouliot showing he belongs but losing Despres is tough considering Martin and Ehrhoff will be gone next year and he could step into a top 4 role making only 900k.

All that said this is still a tough trade to comprehend.

Poor asset management in my book.

I suppose the good news is the Penguins didn't sell low on Beau Bennett.

This team has become an unknown to me. I don't know what to think. The Pens are embarking on a 4 game road trip........
.We will see.

they play the Ducks in Anaheim Fri night - that should be fun

Still smh....this team might get past the Isle's if they play them.....they will be booted by either the Caps or the Rangers.

Dave Molinari @MolinariPG - Pens Twitter reaction to Lovejoy-Despres deal seems evenly split. Some fans absolutely hate it.
Others like it even less than that.

There is talk now that Depres was not well liked in the locker room, and he certainly didn't impress either of two coaching regimes. Sounds like the kid wasn't teachable. I'm warming to the trade.

and you believe that?

that sounds like complete horseshit - but it wouldn't surprise me the local media has been given the word from mgmt. to make them look less like fools by attacking the kid

right on cue...

From Yohe-''The Penguins didn't trust Despres. Didn't know which player they were getting from one day to the next. It's pretty much that simple''.

hmmm...was that Despres or Malkin?

well, they are all in again. It's win or back to the drawing board. If Malkin, Sid or MAF don't show up, it doesn't matter what Lovejoy, Cole, Bortz or Despres do or would have done.

Boom! Despres pounds Shane Doan

4 big hits already

Despres almost gets his 1st goal as a Duck, eh he gets the assist - he looks really good with a mobile partner

I guess the Ducks are gonna be my favorite team from the West to watch

Nice game in his debut - funny how he's just an average sized guy on their team and was a giant on ours

You may be right. Comes from Josh Yohe of the Trib. I doubt he'd say it without corroboration of sorts.

Too bad he played like a small guy, to us. Always getting the worse of each hit he attempted.

yeah well, we'll see how our new boys do tonight

@JoshYohe_Trib #Pens morning lines are:

Perron-Crosby-Hornqvist
Kunitz-Malkin-Comeau
Downie-Sutter-Winnik
Spaling-Lapierre-Adams/Bennett was mixing in on the fourth line a bit,

Letang-Martin
Scuderi-Cole
Pouliot-Lovejoy

**** - if they're not gonna play Beau they might as well have traded him too

HA! - they might have been listening to me

JoshYohe_Trib - Tough to say whether Bennett or Adams is the odd man out tonight. It looked like Bennett was playing tonight, but can't be certain

no one is safe, Spike. Sid and Geno are, but depending on how this season unfolds, there may be another roster overhaul. Beau could be near the top of that list if he keeps sitting.

Adams was a healthy scratch the last few games and they won them all

What they should do is put Kunitz on the 4th line and promote Beau.

and since we're on the subject

New Duck Despres Discusses His Reaction to the Trade to Anaheim

465216938.jpg

Simon Despres was shopping with his girlfriend Ariane in a Pittsburgh-area furniture store when he heard the news that he was no longer a Penguin.

The 23-year-old defenseman had little indication he would be dealt, and certainly thought he was in the clear when he noticed the NHL trade deadline had passed at 3 p.m. Eastern.

“It was by the end of the deadline, so I wasn’t expecting it whatsoever,” said Despres this morning following his first morning skate as a Duck at Honda Center. “Then my phone blew up. I’ve never gotten traded in my life, so it was definitely a shock.”

Despres, who is soft-spoken but looks you right in the eye when he speaks, admits he was a bit upset when he first heard the news. “I was definitely [ticked] off a little bit at the beginning,” he says. “I was with the organization for six years, so it was definitely tough on me. Some of my friends, I’m leaving them behind. But I’ll make new friends here, and it looks like a really good team to be with.

“So far, I like what I’ve seen in the room,” Despres says. “The guys are really nice, they have good team chemistry, and it’s a really good team. So I’m excited about the opportunity to be with the Ducks.

While the realization of being traded sunk in, Despres’ focus inevitably had to turn toward getting to Phoenix to meet up with his new team, who were playing the Coyotes the following night.

“I found out about the trade around 3:30 Pittsburgh time, and at 4 my agent told me I should leave that night,” But the paperwork wasn’t done, so they couldn’t book my flight yet. When they finally called me about getting a flight that night, I had like 15 minutes to pack. I got on the plane, got to Phoenix and I landed around 1 a.m., which was 3 a.m. Pittsburgh time. So, I was definitely a little tired when I got to the hotel.”

He didn’t run into his new Ducks teammates until the following morning over breakfast at the hotel, when he ran into Andrew Cogliano, Kyle Palmieri and another player picked up by Anaheim at the deadline – former Panther Tomas Fleischmann. “They were of course very welcoming,” Despres says. “It’s a small world in hockey, so we all know a little bit of everyone.”

Despres took part in the morning skate at Gila River Arena in Glendale, and he was thrust into the Ducks lineup back there last night, wearing No. 24 and playing a major role in a 4-1 Anaheim victory. In just over 20 minutes of ice time, Despres had an assist and a plus-3 rating with a game-high five hits. Ducks fans can expect more of that physicality this season and beyond.

“I’m a physical defenseman,” Despres says. “I make a good first pass. I’m a strong skater, and I get the shots through to the net.”

Oh, and the name of the French-Canadian from Laval, Quebec? According to him, it’s pronounced see-MONE de-PREE,

you'd think they traded Bobby Orr for Tai Dome...

jfc, they sent him down at one point.

just win now, *******.

I feel for him

but you're right, he's probably better off out of Pittsburgh

lots of new girlfriends could be out there in Californee

say goodbye

Ha......okay maybe I over reacted a bit......but I still don't like the trade. That ends the bitching for me.....let's see what we've got.

I'm with you, Rod. Didn't like the trade, but its time for them to put up or shut up. It is what it is. Win and nothing else matters.

All that crusty Veteran Presence is getting schooled by the lowly Aves 2-0

weak

Sid has to be hurt, did he even play? this team is lifeless without him...a spurt or two from Malkin, and that's it

Too bad the trade deadline has passed, we can't trade Pouliot for Engelland

meanwhile, Ducks up next - can't wait. Despres looks good again with that boat anchor of Scuderi off his back.
