Penguins *******!

worst nightmare begins

No Sid - scratched before the game

Malkin in the infirmary - who knows how long he'll be out after getting hit

Downie was the only hope we had to score., Kunitz still sucks

no dice Bruns win 2-0 with the empty netter at the end

Dejan Kovacevic twitter
Johnston on whether Crosby/Malkin will play tomorrow: 'I don't know. ... We think they might be able to play tomorrow.'

yeah right, Sid got the ebola for sure

Pouliot had a rough game against the Oil. Expected. .

you don't understand - Pens are gonna ruin him too...one mistake and BAM down you go

Penguins Recall Forward Andrew Ebbett; Pouliot Re-Assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton

Dave Molinari @MolinariPG-Bruins coach Claude Julien says he didn't object to Craig Adams replacing Sidney Crosby in the Penguins' lineup. Imagine that.

I'm sure Julien helped Adams tie his skates. I liked the effort today with the craziness that went on with Sid and Geno suddenly absent. Hell, don't rush them back until they are 100% or even 90%. No need to rush things with them.

Sid just got the stinky poops - he'll be OK

Malkin looked bad trying to come back and play - knee? whatever he hurt, it din't look good

Yeah I didn't hate the effort given the circumstances and the opponent. What an innocuous looking hit to sideline Geno....

Hey that Lovejoy thing's really workin' out tho, huh?

Fleury gets the start today.....he needs to limit the rebounds, way too many against Emonton. But then he was playing without a defense.

Penguins better start to figure out how to put the puck in the net, or they are going to have a short playoff run.

as I watch the Wings score their 5th goal against the unraveled and embarrassed Pens team today, my wet dream is that Mario and Co would throw a blank check Mike Babcock's way to become this team's next GM/HC. I beginning to lose interest in their play and that they cannot keep their cool. There shouldn't be one damn player I wouldn't use to restructure this team for the future. They will go one and done in the playoffs because any team can see if you rough them up, they forget how to play, score or just skate away. I don't care what they did recently on the West Coast, new players or not, this team is still the mess it has been for awhile. Down 7-0 in two home games? They have more game misconducts than goals. They are an embarrassment to hockey right now.

more nightmares

that California trip was a dream

Coach Johnston on Hornqvist: “He’s got an injury. We’ll find out tomorrow. It looked bad when he came off the ice."

Glad I didn't waste my time watching this game today. Worked in the yard instead. Its been over a month since I've seen this team win a game. If anyone thinks this team can do anything in the playoffs, I need some of your drugs. I've been saying for some time, it's time to break up the band. Also, Sid has no business being the captain. He's a heck of a scorer, but he's no leader.

This is a team with 4 players, Sid, Malkin, Fleury and Letang - if they don't make it happen, they lose. The new guy trades just aren't doing anything and they just lost their best winger in Horny.

Kunitz shanks another wide open net shot - his specialty.

I can't argue with your statement. Malkin is now hurt, Sid has a bug, Letang's mouth took him out of the game and MAF had little to no help, but couldn't stop a beach ball anyway today. As far as Kunitz, this past month has clearly showed that he really has lost his timing and/or step. The open net miss today was the topper on the sundae. His hands just are not there.

While some of the moves Rutherford made were good ones, i.e. Horny, Perron, Spaling, Comeau and maybe Erhoff, the others are just plain blah! I don't know what they are bringing to the table, but I don't see improvement from last year's team. Maybe in the PO, with the heat turned up, they will come together, but I don't see any fire or spark there. Time will tell, but they seemed to have adopted Johnston's vanilla demeanor.

They need a disciplinarian type of coach. Johnston does.not.impress me. Every time we have a bad call against us or take a bad penalty he just looks lost. Blow this whole thing up and start all over again because what we have just isn't working and it hasn't for years.

Pen's remaining schedule:

12 games, only 2 playoff teams left

Stars
Coyotes
Blues
Hurricanes
Coyotes
Sharks
Flyers
Blue Jackets
Flyers
Senators
Islanders
Sabres

but they do play the Flyers twice - that should keep it interesting

They honestly could lose most of those games. The Sabres game looks like the only sure W. All the others, might as well flip a coin. Doesn't give me that warm & fuzzy feeling.

Here are the issues with the Pens...

1. They rarely develop talent... google a list of Pens draft picks for their history and try to make a full fledged team out of the players that were not NHL ready at 18 or 19....

2. they absolutely are PR first and production second... they make knee jerk moves based on casual fan likes and dislikes, and spin every story heavily through the media. Take Bylsma for instance... they propped him up for years, covering the obvious warts and serious issues he had, which every hardcore hockey fan was griping about... when the casual fan turned on him, they finally cut ties with him, finally pointing out all the issues his system and style had, then made it sound as if this was years of the front office trying to get rid of him. Its nonsense that holds onto guys too long and cuts ties with others too early, almost always selling low and buying high for every move they make these days.

3. They have too few skilled forwards for todays NHL... they perpetually have inconsistent 3rd liners like Dupuis and Comeau playing top 6 roles and spin the idea that their output playing with super elite centers is admirable to the unwashed... the holes in their games and how poorly they are suited for postseason hockey playing on the lines that are going to see the best defensive matchups are pretty easy to see unless you are purely stat watching.
It has gotten better a bit this year. Right now this team has a fully legit top line and Malkin on the 2nd, and no true top 6 guys left after that... contrast that to the trend of having 4 contributing lines and top 6 guys in the bottom 6 with teams like the Isles. With obstruction up badly, you have to overcompensate with scorers because you really don't know when you are going to get your shots....

4. They overvalue experienced vets... which is leaguewide... Hockey Front offices expect players to contribute till they are 40... they refuse to acknowledge that most players are done by 35. it leads to insane dead weight contracts and situations like Kunitz, who is sadly in the process of slowing down badly, holding onto a top 6 role and PP time based on rep and past performance.
Scuds is another one... he is ill suited for the system we run... he also has slowed a bit from his earlier days, witch was already slow...he would be excellent on a team that played a shotblocking system with a slower, meticulous offense. the Kings didn't resign him because they were moving to a faster paced breakout, which is what we had here when we signed him. He cant play the puck well and it becomes obvious that he overly relies on his partner to do so, which in turn makes his partner look worse than he should because of all the defensive pressure they put on the guy... It got Despres traded for a guy who now looks worse than Despres because he is far less talented. Its not a coincidence that every single defenseman paired with scuds the past two years has a drop in stats for that time except Maatta somehow... but he will get premium minutes because of his vet status.

5. CEC is sterile and quite possibly cursed... The pens luck since moving into Consol is actually worse than it was in the igloo, and that is saying something... not to mention that every single pens game at CEC seems like it is soooo corporate and with an overly calm, borderline disinterested crowd... the Nailers have a more lively atmosphere. Pens fans on the road are more boisterous than the home crowd. Its a great facility, but as far as character... the building is not a good hockey rink... and that isn't even mentioning the horrid ice conditions they have there on a regular basis partially because they don't chill the building enough so the casual fans don't have to dress warmer.

6. Their (appropriate) crusade against NHL goonism a few years back has earned them the ire of the refs... sometimes ref bitching is overstated, but the stats nor the tape lies in this one case... the pens get fewer call for, more calls against , more ignored borderline call, and more even up calls against than any other playoff team... Dowine gets one a game on rep alone. at one point the Pens went nearly 2 months without a game with more PPs for them than against them, including a couple game with nothing at all called vs their opponent.

The bottom line is the Pens actually have the D to do something in the playoffs, They are probably top 5 in defensive play and would be higher had they not lost Maatta and played the bottom pairing as they did all year. they really don't have the O, which is odd. They don't have the physicality to overcome their lack of scoring and faster aggressive teams will take advantage of their D trying to compensate on O and then the great unwashed will blame it all on Fluery when the odd mans start happening with regularity. Their only hope is Crosby and Malkin carrying them, but that doesn't seem likely based on their play this season...

perhaps Sutter will quit trying to earn a 2c spot by forcing stuff and play solid in the playoffs, and maybe they put Bennett with a finisher and get something going there. maybe Downie doesnt go full retard and maybe Lapierre really is a playoff stud. Maybe Kunitz gets the legs he had a season and a half ago and maybe Comeau isn't the inconsistent mess later in the season he has been in every other stop in his career... That just seems like a lot of things to ask for on top of health

Look, if this doesn't work out this year they haveCrosby and Malkin and the young D to rebuild into another type of team.. I just don't think the front office has enough of a clue to do it right

Hugely embarrassing game from all points of view. I can't see how Mario puts up with this...Rutherford had to make one more trade just to make a trade it seems.....sorry Mad, I just don't see the D you do. Flat out non existent since the trades.....

One and done......money

Doomed, finally get a healthy team together and then immediately everyone starts dropping like flies again

let the excuses begin!.....So Kuni is anemic now?

Rossi: Kunitz getting edge on iron deficiency

By the end of December, Mike Johnston was worried.

“He came into my office and I said, ‘I'm not seeing the Chris Kunitz I know,'” Johnston said. “And Chris said, ‘To be honest, I don't think I've felt great since the Olympic break last year.'”

To be honest, I had barely recognized the Kunitz who came back from the Olympics. He looked slower. His hands seemed gone. Forget aggressive, there barely was a forecheck. And those “Kunikaze” hits were few and far between.

“Most people thought, ‘Oh, Chris Kunitz is getting old' or whatever,'” Johnston said of his 35-year-old winger.

“That wasn't it.”

Kunitz isn't old. He isn't injured. He isn't sick.

He has an iron deficiency

Petulant Penguins show ugliest face

What was Chris Kunitz thinking?

The Penguins laughably went to a local paper over the weekend to explain that an iron deficiency has hampered his performance since Sochi. Presumably because it only takes a regular dosage of One A Day to avoid missing gaping nets. But the shield-free fact is that the coaching staff has been outright dismayed by Kunitz’s performance since November, and the behind-the-scenes criticism is that he failed to adjust his conditioning regimen to being 35 years old. Nothing else comes up.

Maybe Geritol is in order, instead.

Or whatever medicine might prevent an otherwise intelligent player from being the third man in an altercation to put his team short-handed, then flipping the puck in McCauley’s direction at the end of the first period in a flagrant attempt to send some playground-style message. Call McCauley overly sensitive. That’s fair. But the additional minor and 10-minute misconduct that followed handed the NHL’s No. 1 power play a third goal and the game.

Moderately good news

Josh Yohe @JoshYohe_Trib - Pens are hopeful Hornqvist won't be out longer than a week or two.

Pittsburgh Penguins@penguins - #Pens Coach Johnston: Hornqvist won't be on the road trip. Out for about a week. Malkin day-to-day. May join trip later.

Get em all back for the playoffs, flip the switch and hope we face the Isles in the 1st rd..

Of course it's possible we traded away all our muscle...we shall see..

...and when is Sid gonna grow up and get married and have kids?

If Tom Brady can impregnate Gisele
