Steelers work out DE Alejandro Villanueva Wednesday

Suddenly, the thought of the Steelers' scores of young defensive linemen making the team have taken a pause for breath.

The team reportedly worked out ex-Eagles defensive end Alejandro Villanueva, a 6-foot-9, 277-pound ex-U.S. Army Ranger who is coming off three tours of duty in Afghanistan.

As ESPN's Scott Brown pointed out Wednesday, here's a great piece on Villanueva.

He hasn't played football since 2009, and after spending the preseason with the Eagles, Villaneuva logged three snaps against the Steelers last week. He must have made at least something of an impression.

Apparently, he was a wide receiver at Army, and while Brown's report does indicate he'll remain a defensive lineman, it would be a fun novelty for Thursday's preseason finale against Carolina to see him running routes. Of course, the team would have to sign him before that, and perhaps the interest is merely in just acquiring a first-hand look at someone if they feel they need help at some point this season. It's certainly an interesting story. He'd fit in well with the Steelers' ever-growing collection of late-and-undrafted defensive lineme

He would bring some character to this team and I assume a great work ethic. At the very least maybe we want to get him on the PS and know this will help our chances of that.

Excellent!

cut everybody on the D line and get waiver wire scrubs to replace them, they can't be any worse - that's been my plan for the last 2 years

Relax, it was just a look. How do you know what to buy, if you don't shop?

Salute the nation

i'd bring him in as a te/wr
give our QB a tall WR

6-foot-9 277 lbs. He'd be one helluva tall target that's for sure. But, can he block?

obviously not too well since the Beagles dumped him as an OT.

can we bring in a few QB's

While in philly camp, he was converted (although, obviously without success) to a DE. He has gained 40# and his playing weight is at #315 at present. My guess is, Munch wanted to look at him as a T. Got to be as good as Adams and Whimper??? He did start at LT for Army for over a year too.
