They started with an 11 win season in 1992 after a losing Noll campaign. Oh those were the days. Those Steeler teams knew who they were: tough, physical, OL play that would knock heads, a D that was tough as hell beyond anything else. You knew you were in a game when you played Cowher teams. And Barry Foster? Forgaboutit.

Cowher was 7-8 in the playoffs without Ben, 5-1 with him. Tomlin was 8-9 jn the playoffs WITH Ben, 0-2 without him.

Cowher won divisions and playoff games with Kordell, Tomzcak, O’Donnell, and Maddox.

Cowher made the playoffs 10 of 15 years and won playoff games in 8 different seasons, Tomlin made the playoffs 12 of 18 years and won playoff games in 4 of 18 seasons.

Cowher coached the majority of his career before Heinz Field brought in new revenue used on retaining and acquiring free agents.

Tomlin will finish with the most wins in Steeler history in a few years and is the 3rd best coach by a mile, IMO.

Yeah, I really tend to doubt Cowher would have gone the last decade of Ben's career winning only three playoff games like Tomlin did.

However, I will say this: As much as we like to dismiss and mock Tomlin never having a losing season, there is something to be said for it, as both Cowher and Noll had them. Bill Belichick had them too.

In a sense, Tomlin has become the ultimate high floor/low ceiling coach, which unfortunately, is more than good enough for Rooney.

In 1998 the team started 5-2 then collapsed down the stretch, had a miserable 1999, then started 0-3 in 2000 before rebounding to 9-7, but missing the playoffs for the third year in a row

By the start of the 2001 season there was a persistent loud fan and media clamoring to replace Cowher

Even after the AFC CG in 01 and another playoff berth in 02, Fans and media were quick to revisit the narrative he needed to go after an injury plagued 03 season... then after 04 and 05 that quietly disappeared

But there were plenty of people even after the SB win that were happy to see him retire... especially media guys...

This is the stat that matters for me.

By a long "country" mile.

While this is true, the stretch without a playoff win takes away its significance. Also, the Steelers were the #7 seed in 2 of their past 3 playoff appearances, so they only made it due to the expanded playoff format.

There sure is something to Clown-lin making the playoffs so often and winning in them so few. Other than the Cowher teams he took over (2007 - 2011) how many Steeler teams did he win much in the postseason? Almost none. We KNOW he hasn't won ANY in the last 7 years. What bragging rights has he earned in those years? He has done nothing in almost a decade.

My god, I mean, just let that sink in for a minute.

And led the NFL in pro bowl appearances between 2011-2021, so it sure as hell wasn't "management gave him no talent" like I heard for years.

Cowher took over a team that was 17th offensively and 22nd defensively in 1992.

Tomlin took over a team that was top 10 on both sides of the ball in 2007.
If Mike Tomlin turned in his resignation tomorrow look at the state of the franchise vs what he inherited in 2007.
And please, no remarks about an 8-8 team in 2006. Keep in mind Ben was coming off a life threatening motorcycle accident and and emergency appendectomy that off season.
That 2007 team had a loaded roster and a young franchise QB. Plus two great coordinators and assistant coaches.
A far cry from what he’d leave us with now.

You can't play defense like that anymore. That's been a big part of our problem. Cowher was able to take punishing defensive players and mediocre QB and wide receiver play combined with a brutal running attack into and win in the playoffs repeatedly, almost winning it all with O'Donnell at QB in 1995.

Now having a run blocking vs. a pass blocking line is offensive suicide..and the defense can't cast a shadow on the wide receiver or it's PI.

Not defending Tomlin as the same rules criteria applied to his offenses as well when he had the Killer Bs....and he didn't accomplish jack squat.

I wish he could have stayed another 8-10 years.
At least a couple anyways. HCMT would have hitched onto some other team and they'd be enjoying mediocre year after year after year...

Losing seasons in a well run program equal draft picks for game changers. Picking number 21 means you are king of the dip *****.
