I remember that game too. But that had nothing to do with Martyball. Tommy Maddox kept throwing it to the other team...for touchdowns. And they even had a fumble return td. I remember not quite believing what I was watching.Martyball was Cowher’s identity. Still find it funny how it worked for him. So much so that in 2002 the Steelers led in almost every statistical category vs the expansion Texans and still lost.
I do miss the Cowher era days though
Don't forget mike Webster munch did amazing things coaching that guy
Why did that remind you of martyball? We had like 460 yards offense to their 80, but our QB kept turning the ball over.First game came to mind when it came to Martyball lol
I heard the same saying at Jax Beach in the early 2000's, never understood it.Alex Van Pelt--- That's a name I haven't heard in a long time...A very long time. Back in the day at the old Oyster Pub in Daytona Beach, I was part of a group of Steeler fans that showed up there religiously on Sundays during the early Cowher years. Whenever the starter went off the rails, we'd drunkenly yell out for coach to put in "pork and beans"!!! We want pork and beans!!!! It was our nickname for the guy, based off the similarity to Van Camps Pork & Beans.....I guess you had to be there.... Right @mightyguru ?![]()
Ray Lewis says "Here hold my knife. And don't be talking about Bussie taking my gig."If Bettis would play in today's NFL, he'd be arrested for murdering linebackers and DBs 6 weeks into the season.
Wow. An era where players cared about more than just money. The worst memory from the Cowher era for me was the 1994 playoff loss to the underdog Chargers…in our house.
Heavy favorites, we were kicking their a$$ all game, 415 total yards to their 226.
Except we couldn’t score.
The Chargers needed only one big play courtesy of a defensive breakdown that left their TE wide open for 43yd TD.
Maybe Eric Green and company were too focused on making a Super Bowl Rap video which never came to fruition.
Tim McKyer was so distraught and overwhelmed over the loss he didn’t have the strength to walk off the field.

I would guess not even mediocrity dependent of course on what organization he went to.At least a couple anyways. HCMT would have hitched onto some other team and they'd be enjoying mediocre year after year after year...

Let me put it like this: How many of those years did Ben will the team to victory in games they had no business winning? Games that would push their record to over .500?
I will venture to say that if Tomlin had become the head coach of say the Browns or the Raiders not only would he not be a head coach after 4 or 5 years he might not even be an NFL coordinator...maybe an assistant or maybe a college coach. "Never say never!" But...yeah think about it.
Being hired by the Steelers was the goose that laid the golden egg for Mediocre Mike. Like a winning Lotto ticket.
The Houston Maddox game and Falcons tie...both at the fringe of my memory.I remember that game too. But that had nothing to do with Martyball. Tommy Maddox kept throwing it to the other team...for touchdowns. And they even had a fumble return td. I remember not quite believing what I was watching.
The Falcons tie that year was equally as frustrating.
Thanks for sharing. As you know we care that deeply about what you think. The Houston Maddox game and Falcons tie...both at the fringe of my memory.
A future hof qb who was already 5-1 in the postseason with a sb, two future defensive players of the year, a hof defensive coordinator who led you to a top 5 defense 6 years in a row, and a team that finished top 10 on both sides of the ball. Boy did Tomlin cash in at the right time after leading that 31st ranked pass defense in Minnesota in 2006.I would guess not even mediocrity dependent of course on what organization he went to.

I mean we DID burn our last 2 #1's on the line & a 4th last year...Plus we traded up for Broderick...Bettis had a superior OL vs. Najee's swinging doors...
And in a few years Tomlin is going to leave the cupboard bare as they scramble with patch fixes every year to salvage the last few years of TJ, Cam, and Minkah.A future hof qb who was already 5-1 in the postseason with a sb, two future defensive players of the year, a hof defensive coordinator who led you to a top 5 defense 6 years in a row, and a team that finished top 10 on both sides of the ball. I "liked" your post. Buy I don't like your post if you know what I meanAnd in a few years Tomlin is going to leave the cupboard bare as they scramble with patch fixes every year to salvage the last few years of TJ, Cam, and Minkah.
Tomlin will walk once they’re done and the team will be in a shambles for the next guy.
Simple question.I mean we DID burn our last 2 #1's on the line & a 4th last year...Plus we traded up for Broderick...
Our line issues look no more settled than 2 years ago, & we have burned assets here, so it's tough. At least they've tried to get this line shored up...
You can't get that type of production out of your last 2 #1's...Injuries or not, you Just can't...These dudes were supposed to be our Bookends
That has really stunted our offenses growth, these 2 #1's not getting rolling...Our combined production from them ain't a whole lot
Well except BJ's 3 penalties on one drive...
That's a different message...Maybe the Steelers NEED to start drafting guys with position flexibility...My point is they drafted #1 2 years in a row the position where it was needed...Simple question.
How many games did Troy play at RT???
Now, ask yourself 'what did the coaching staff have to do to mitigate losing Troy AND what were the expectations KNOWING that Dan Moore Jr. could ONLY play LT???'
And as I always say, Shades is helped greatly by having the Browns and Bengals in his division, and more recently Lamar Jackson. While this is true, the stretch without a playoff win takes away its significance. Also, the Steelers were the #7 seed in 2 of their past 3 playoff appearances, so they only made it due to the expanded playoff format.
It can be fixed fairly quickly with some shrewd drafting if we have a team with sharp acumen. And in a few years Tomlin is going to leave the cupboard bare as they scramble with patch fixes every year to salvage the last few years of TJ, Cam, and Minkah.

Chin had an absolutely silly record of something like 100-7-1 when entering the 4th quarter with a lead. Get a lead, hand the ball off to Bam Morris or Jerome Bettis, and win by grinding out the clock and not giving the other the ball back to the other team.Martyball was Cowher’s identity. Sorry, but the hell it can! Fixing this team and organization is going to take a complete overhaul and that is certainly NOT done quickly. New coaches, new philosophies on Offense, Defense, and Special teams what players fit and which do not, contract analysis of the full roster, plan and execute a personnel strategy, resetting the scouting room's strategy and perhaps means of analysis, and I could go on and on and on. it's going to take YEARS to burn this trash heap to the ground and build anew.It can be fixed fairly quickly with some shrewd drafting if we have a team with sharp acumen.
You sir, underestimate the value of Fu and a 6th!!"Shrewd drafting" there are no magic wands in the draft.
Bull Kucka, Cowher turned this team around immediately. Yes, he did inherit SOME players from Noll (Dawson, Bubby, Barry Foster, Thomas Everett, Eric Green, Haselrig, Willis, Worley, Woodson, Lloyd, John Jackson, Hoge, Ilkin, Lake, O'Donnell, Mills, Strzelczyk, Evans) but he took a 7-9 Steelers team to a 10-6 playoff team all in a season, that is a quick turnaround. The Steelers were a mostly perennial playoff team from then on, and I don't mean a Clown-lin team, Cowher won in the playoffs.Sorry, but the hell it can! actually they were 11-5 Cowher's first year, I think the team that went to the Super Bowl in 1995 had 22 new starters compared to what he took over from Noll, it was a quick turn around, I think Cowher set or tied a record, most consecutive playoff appearances to start a career with 6 straight.Bull Kacka, Cowher turned this team around immediately.
