It was a hot topic during the playoffs after the Kansas City Chiefs won the coin toss in overtime, and drove down the field to win their playoff game against the Buffalo Bills without Josh Allen and his offense getting a chance. The high profile stakes have now changed the rule book. Now both teams will get a chance with the football according to NFL insider Ian Rappoport. We can essentially call it the ‘Josh Allen Rule’.

Had this been the case during this year’s playoffs…. Josh Allen would have taken the field with a chance. https://t.co/9YszdDjXUZ

The rule change will only happen for the playoffs according to reports, but it could lead to eventually changing the regular season rules. During the regular season teams only have a 10 minute overtime period, and it goes very quickly. Often times after a teams first possession there isn’t much time left for the other teams offense. This has led to an increase in ties across the NFL. The Pittsburgh Steelers have tied twice in the past three seasons. The last time they had a tie prior to 2018 was 2002.

Now NFL playoff games won’t ride on the coin toss. Something that the league has been trying to find ways around for several seasons now. They’ve struggled to make the right adjustments, but this could finally point them in the right direction.

Stay tuned for more rule amendments from the NFL Owners meetings.

Why just the playoffs ?

I think it should be incorperated in-season as well.

EDIT: I don't think it would have mattered in any of our "ties" the last couple ties.

Salute the nation

**** that!

Here’s an idea to make OT fair: Have a full 60 minutes of football prior to OT where each team has a chance to win the game and prevent OT all together.

There’s no guarantee that each team gets an equal number of possessions in regulation. Isn’t that also unfair? They might as well do away with the clock and go to possessions like college football OT.

Yep… if you want to do away woth the coin toss just give the ball to the team that last held a lead, then let them win it with any score… making it less desirable for the trailing team to play for OT and instead try to win it there… dont incentivize OT

This is the f'ing pros. It's not college. They changed the rule once. If your D can't stop the opposing O from scoring a TD, then your team doesn't deserve a chance. This is a team game. Win it in regulation or deal with the rules. I see no reason they should have even entertained changing the OT rules to make sure both teams get the ball now.

The NFL loves OT. Thats extra ad revenue for the networks and increases profits.

Right, probably has more to do with money than it does fairness or competitive integrity. The NFL knows they reduced the amount of their product (entertainment) by denying Allen a chance to get the ball.

It is a needed change. The coin toss carries too much weight. Fatigue is a huge factor. Just saying to stop the other team is not as easily done when your team is gassed. And what if your defense was just on the field for a drive to give up the game tying score then they have to go right back out for OT?

It’s fine to stay as is for regular season. Regular season ties aren’t so bad and you do have to consider the effects of a long game for next week. You do have a tomorrow in the regular season. There may not be a tomorrow in the playoffs. You want a definitive winner that is not unduly decided by a coin toss.

Why stop there how about best if three but last team gets a chance and if it's tied another best of three. How about untie the defenses hands and living with the outcome.

That’s another reason why the change must be made. They have neutered defenses and slanted the game so much to the offenses. For decades the sudden death was fine because usually both teams did get possessions. But now with offense having such huge advantages, it became far too easy for the team winning the toss to score on the first and only OT possession.

Why is it fair if a team receives a kickoff late in the 4th Quarter, drives down the field and kicks a FG after 59:59 to win a game, but it’s unfair if they do the SAME EXACT THING 30 seconds later in OT?

Field goal was too easy. Justin Tucker can hit one pretty routine from 55. That's like 36 yards of offense. But if you give up a major..... tough ****. You lost.

Meh.... .at one time I probably would have cared.....anymore....whatever.

No creativity…If the score ends in a tie… They come back tomorrow and play the game all over.

The problem with something like this is at some point now a team will score a TD. The other team will score a TD. Then the first team will not score and the second team will get a field goal game over. Team A will feel jobbed because they would have won in the past. How about Buffalo doesn't let KC move down the field in 13 seconds?

No OT in the regular season, if you can't win in 60 minutes you deserve to tie.
In playoff games ending regulation play in a tie, the head coaches should face off in a cage match at the 50-yard line.

When the best Defense in the NFL can't stop a team from scoring for a measly 13 seconds...you might want to examine THAT, rules committee.
