Steelers make trade for CB

Me? I said I like the trade. I just added that it isn't free. He is going to cost them a 4th round pick. 2 starters on defense are 4th rounders and 1 good WR on offense is a 4th. Would you trade those guys for a one year CB that has openly said he wants to start outside and will probably be gone next year. It's a valid question. Again I understand why they did it but I also understand it isn't a no consequence deal.

It's also strange that people love our late round picks this year (and really ever year) but somehow a 4th next year won't make the team and sucks without anyone even knowing who they are.

Sorry. I was kinda just trying to be funny.

As for the 4th or 5th, yea, I'll trade it for a one year corner. However, I don't get all caught up in the draft like some guys. I see the draft as a crapshoot, even 1sts.

I think it is valid criticism of Tomlin to question not winning more with the QB he has. I think some of that is on the QB, but still it is valid. And I like Tomlin. However, if the team makes a move that can clearly be seen as an upgrade for right now, those who have had that complaint I think would be on board.

Looks like Golson may have season ending shoulder surgery, think this changes the naysayers opinions about the trade ?

I'm not totally against it either. And I agree with Vader that I think there is some considerable value associated with a 4th round pick and $1 million in cap room. It's not like a 1st rounder or $10 million in cap room, but it's something.

And from my very first post, this is more about my confusion over this whole when we were trying to trade for him, when it fell through, what our thinking was taking Golson in round 2. Then following it up with another CB in round 4.

You've seen my Draft Analysis. I'm not sold on ANY of the DB's we took this year in the draft. Every single one I would have vetoed.

And now that we trade for a CB, doesn't that somewhat confirm my analysis of concern on the bodies we brought in? Injury or no injury to Golson, the Steelers were interested in Boykin, so the injury didn't change anything except maybe how much we were willing to spend. For all we know, the 5th/4th rounder was always the asking price and the injury just made Tombert panic and decide to pay the price Chip Kelly was asking for. We'll never know.

And I like Boykin. Thought he was great value for the Eagles in round 4 and I told everyone when I was working in Philly that I thought that was a good pick.

But getting a decent, undersized nickel defender in round 4 and now showing that they are available in trade still brings me back to the Golson evaluation and why we think he is worth a 2nd round pick.

I'm still upset about the Golson pick and this trade just proves my point about it's failed logic. And now Golson has an unknown injury. Undersized and injured? What a surprise.

I'm not upset about the trade. I'm upset about the Golson selection.

That's why they got Boykin. Were worried about Golson needing surgery. Golson only weighs 175 for Pete's sake. Boy needs to eat....and lift more.

And just for emphasis, most call Boykin "undersized" but he is almost a full inch taller than Golson, weighs close to 10 lbs. heavier and EACH of his arms is over 1 1/2" longer.

That stuff matters. Golson is just so ******* small. He's Dri Archer 2.0

I get the feeling the Jets could cut Revis tomorrow and we sign him for vet min and deljzc would still find something wrong with the deal

If Boykin looks good in preseason and wants reasonable money, they could get something done. My guess is that he will want to test free agency though.

But here is what drives me nuts. When Golson was selected, you were pushing PJ Williams. My argument with you at that point was about production. You stated at that time Williams has the measurables and all that. I get that. You compared him to Cortez Allen, and that is where I almost fell off my chair. They need another Cortez Allen right now?

I think you are guilty at times of trying to find a conspiracy behind every thing. Maybe they drafted Golson simply because they thought he was the best CB available. By production alone he was. And why use the word panic? Panic? A guy has a possible season ending injury, you trade a 5th for a proven guy. That is panic? And the guy was never injured before. What if he just fell awkwardly. Could happen to a 6'2" 205 pound guy, too.

Damn, do you watch games? are you not as sick and tired as I am of watching corners just chase around receivers in Pittsburgh? Let's try something else. Let's see if college production can transfer. It is better to me than trying to see if you can get something out of no production.

They wanted Boykin before they even drafted Golson. They know the secondary is bad... they knew it even after the draft.

That's the point. They wanted Boykin before the draft. But that doesn't mean they wouldn't have drafted Golson even if they had got Boykin before the draft.

I think they would have drafted Golson anyway. I believe they traded for Boykin because of the play of Allen last year, Gay's age, and no depth. Golson has little to do with Boykin IMHO. If anything I see Gay being moved to the slot and Boykin going outside.

I do not know or have an opinion on who might get moved where as far as the defensive backs go but Boykin looks like a good signing regardless. Golson may turn into a good player right now we don't know. We have some guys that are getting older and a bunch of young guys that need to develop. Cortez may or may not be what they wanted him to be that remains to be seen as well. My favorite defensive back that was on the board when we picked went to the cowboys right after we picked Bud Dupree. I am not sure I would have taken him instead of Dupree but after that it seemed to be a big drop in talent level with what was left. Glad we got this guy via trade it looks like he might be a keeper at this point in time and if he has a good year he will be worth the picks and with a bit of luck they might get to sign him to a decent deal.

When you look through the recent years what high pick investments have the Steelers made at the Defensive Back position other than Polamalu and Chad Scott (and that is a long time ago). You draft what you are. Some teams play cover and with a few key pass rushers get their pressure. This team has drafted 5 first rounders in its last 8 in the force unit (though you could argue Timmons and Shazier are just as important to the cover). At any rate they are clearly saying we will make up for average to below average DBs with a very aggressive skilled force unit. It wasn't like when they won SB's they had an all pro DB unit either.

Look, I am a fan of playing younger players as warrented, but IIRC the old school Steeler way wasn't to play rookies all the time, only if they really earned it. the best plan was to have a few talented promising guys that might still have some rough edges on the bench behind a vet for a year or two, then when the more expensive Vet reached his contract year, replacing him with the guy behind him.... The secondary was a mess. You have an older Gay, a relative unproven commodity in Blake, Allen, who had a mental meltdown last season, and a couple of rookies. This is a question mark position in every way shape and form for this team... its biggest potential hole on what otherwise can be a contending team. Shoring it up for this season at twice what they committed to it would have been a great move...

My prayer life will suffer with this move since I won't be doing a Rosary anymore every time the other team does a passing play.

My wife does that for the whole game and to steal and slightly abuse a quote from the movie Patton, "father I want a prayer so the weather clears and we can attack and kill the Germans" priest "General that might require a mighty thick prayer rug for that one". Patton, "father I don't care if it takes a damned flying carpet".....

Not bad to get a top-10 CB in exchange for a 4th/5th round draft pick... Colbert should pop some champagne.

I am sure they felt the same way when my white co-workers would get together and discuss the pig we were getting and going to skin out and butcher up, or something.

How long have you hated Muslims?
