Hopefully, Timmons will correct these mistakes quickly. We need his veteran leadership on Defense. There is video of the assorted miscues at the link provided.

Steelers vs Browns Film Review: Lawrence Timmons Miscues
Posted on 11 September 2014 at 6:05 am by Matthew Marczi

The Pittsburgh Steelers are counting on inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons to be the nucleus of a defense this season, he inherited the buck linebacker position and signal-calling duties, and Sunday against the Cleveland Browns was his first meaningful game acting in this role.

Unfortunately, much of it wasn’t very pretty, especially once we get to the second half of the game. Defensivecoordinator Dick LeBeau said after the game that the biggest issue the defense had in the second half was lapses in communication.

That just so happens to fall under Timmons’ jurisdiction, and he struggled to get his troops lined up in advanceof the Browns’ hurry up pace in the second half. More than that, he struggled often to find the right holes, overrunning several plays in the process.
Early in the game, on the Browns’ first drive, Timmons was put in one-on-one coverage with tight end Jordan Cameron, a Pro Bowler from a year ago. He was clearly ill-prepared when the tight end ran a go route, as you can tell by his footwork. Cameron was beyond him by the time he was 10 yards past the line of scrimmage.

Midway through the second quarter, with the Browns backed up deep in their own end, Cleveland ran BenTate off left end. With the offensive line able to control the right side of the defense, it was up to Timmons to come in and make the tackle, be he overran the play by taking the gap outside of the end, which MikeMitchell had. This allowed Tate to cut back inside for a 25-yard gain.

Early on in the third quarter, rookie Terrance West got the carry off right tackle. Timmons would have seemingly had him dead to rights, taking a straight path right to the ball carrier, but Timmons again took his pursuit too far wide, and West cut inside for 22 yards.

On the Browns’ second possession of the third quarter, they quickly marched down the field into the red zone.

On second and eight from the 15-yard line, Isaiah Crowell received the handoff, and Timmons again seemingly chose the wrong hole, thinking that he could squeeze between the center and right guard on the move. This justgot him blocked out of the play and helped create an alley full of orange helmets that allowed Crowell a clear
path to the end zone virtually untouched.

Late in the third quarter, inside the red zone once again, Timmons got himself caught up inside, hemmed in by the tight end as West ran behind the pulling guard around the right end for an easy 10-yard gain.

Midway through the fourth quarter, with first and 10 from their own 24, the Browns ran West up the middle. Timmons looked to be there in the hole waiting for him, but he apparently thought he saw something that he didn’t, because he moved to his left before cutting back to the right, which allowed the back to get nine yards.

On the subsequent second and one play (seen above), Timmons simply missed West in the hole, stretching out for a meek arm tackle around the thick back’s legs to no avail, which led to a 29-yard run.

Unfortunately, Timmons himself was responsible for many of the explosive plays that the Steelers defense gave up during the game. There’s no reason to sugarcoat what was a highly disappointing performance, but these were not mistakes that could be attributed to his position switch. This is just poor recognition and execution.

I mentioned this in another thread. Timmons has always had these issues. He normally doesn't have so many in one game. I think he is over thinking because of his new position.

I thought Shazier missed quite a few assignments too....only way to go is up!

This place is about to explode.

It is good that when Timmons had such a bad game, the Steelers still won. Since it is unlikely that he will be that badly out of position tonight, and in future games, critics should look for improved performance by the entire LB crew -- none of the 4 has started for a season at their present position. This might make things tough for a bit, but the learning curve will happen and the performances will improve. Butler and LeBeau will see to that.

The #1 problem with this defense last year was big plays, it was a problem again in the last seconds win against the Browns. The BROWNS.

Hopefully it will get corrected soon, we have an offense that looks like it could be awesome, when we want to be.

I saw JJ miss a few key tackles in the backfield, I saw Cam Thomas and McLendon being blown off the line, I saw Timmons taking too long to get people set up, I saw Worilds having his lunch stole so there's plenty of blame to go around.

I saw the coaches Tomlin and LeBeau blame communication issues.

Very true, but being out of position and/or pushed aside for a TD run is nothing new to Timmons.

Give Timmons another extension now he's well worth the money

We see why Foote was a starter for so long. Timmons makes mistakes and needs a solid startr next to him. Now Timmons is the vet and he can't be making these mistakes. The switch to Buck should not be this difficult for him.

Hopefully he can adjust. Looks like he may not be a real quick learner, like when they moved him outside for awhile..he sucked big time. I wouldn't think that the two inside positions would be that much different but calling plays too just might be outside his immediate threshold, time will tell I guess.

Larry Foote had a great game for the Cardinals on Monday night. He was far more valuable than people thought. He wasn't the geatest athlete but he was a very smart player who could get everybody lined up and made quick reads to make plays.

The steelers had a ton of communication problems and getting lined up week 1. I hope Timmons has that sorted out now because you can't expect Shazier to do it, at least not right away.

They are different in their responsibilities. Timmons moved to the mack position while Shazier took the buck position. This means Timmons will stay inside more and stay in the box more often. The problem is that Timmons, Shazier, and Spence are all buck ILBs. Williams is the only true mack on the team. The buck position is more free to roam and has outside responsibility due to the nature of the offensive set. The mack is the run stuffer and engages with the OL much more often than the more athletic free roaming buck. BTW Sylvester was going to be the mack but he didn't work out.

Outside of his hit on Flucco on the goal line, Timmons was ******* horrible again tonight. He missed tackles all night. I'm almost going to consider moving him back and putting Shazier at the mack position. **** me.
