The Defense

All teams do. When a player is gassed he raises his arm and a replacement comes in. Highsmith was doing nothing in the fourth quarter. He should have been given a breather or two.
I'll take my chances with a gassed Heyward, Watt, Highsmith, Fitzpatrick, etc. on third and three late in the fourth quarter than run with guys like Jamir Jones and Chris Wormley.

Unless it's an extraordinarily hot and humid day the top players need to be able to gut it out when the game's on the line. It's why they get paid the big bucks.

More than that - they should want to gut it out.

Hot and humid days you can still sub out early in non critical situations. Late in the game barring injury you need you best present and ready.

Except that the players themselves take themselves out of the game. Then what? A balance has to be stuck during the course of the game. Spell the starters occasionally during the game in hopes they have enough in the tank to be on the field and effective late in the game.

I believe they're 14 point underdogs vs the Bills.

This defense is 1 or 2 highest paid defenses in the league. Filled with high round talent yet they still underachieve greatly and have for a while. They get run through and run over weekly(even with TJ) and I’m sure the past 3 have been framed as “Teryl Austin’s defense.” Week 1 was Tomlin’s defense(only when they win of course). Bottom line is this is Tomlin’s defense and has been for a long time. It’s the same garbage schemes and just blame the players when it doesn’t work.

The lack of preparation for this game coming off of 10 days is embarrassing. Penalties all over the place and just no energy until Pickett had to take care of that.

Tomlin is being exposed as a fraud. He’s relied on Ben and other HOF players to carry him year after year and it has come to an end.

Yes, we need a new head coach. Bush should not be starting. He's too easily blocked, small, doesn't engage plays close to the LOS, and not great in coverage. Maybe Robinson can do better if the Tomlin demotes Bush. Our DL needs a new DT/NT and Heyward is good but old. We've got some issues. We are 0-5 without Watt.

The draft and free agency will hopefully address thees holes.

Could be 0-4 without a blocked extra point.

An injury to the long snapper caused a bad snap and the holder had to adjust, and the kicker missed the extra point. Its rare to win a game on the back LS. Having a pick six and five turnovers helped too. You get that once in a 100 games! Maybe the odds are even longer. Bottom line, we were lucky to beat the Bengals.

No, this isn't guys tapping their helmet after 10 consecutive pass rushes, it's a part of a normal defensive rotation.

Which is what exactly?

Unless this normal defensive rotation only started in the last two drives I think steelerfan448 is mistaken. The core of our starters look to have played the majority of the game. Weird to see Adams with a very limited number of snaps. Did he get hurt?
Beats me but I thought it was odd with supposedly Alualu losing his start.

Tomlin showed his hand by bringing Kenny in second half, down one score. He has no answer, problems far from just who Tomlin puts under center. The defense has become are weak link, yes, they make plays here and there but in reality, when it comes key part of game making a stop we suck, we saw the same last year, Ben was able to bring us back was the reason for the record. Tomlin will not make a change during a game when one player is struggling replace him and see where it goes. Excuses as players gassed, come on when you watch other games, how many times do you see or say that. Again, make the stop and go to the bench, can't make the excuse now the offense does not allow the defense to rest. Steelers have the QB they wanted, now will receivers get open and then catch the ball. Will Harris go instead of studder step and lose yardage; this week will be a key part of how this season goes.

This sums it up nicely. Unless our guys have been pilsbury dough-boy-ing it, they should be good to go. Look at other teams subbing in and out, most do exactly what slash is saying. If our Defense is spending to much time on the field of play than our scheme / D play calls / etc. are crap. Our 3rd and long proves a lot.

No one should be expecting this team to win any of our next 4 games. We might get lucky and win 1 but that's all it will be - luck. This team just is not very good in any aspect. The coaches have no clue how to get the most out of the players they do have. I always root for the Steelers to win and the rest of this season will be no different. I'll yell and scream at the TV and throw the occasional pillow or remote or whatever is in my hand. But, this team needs to rebuild their big uglies on both sides of the ball first and foremost. They have a couple pieces to maybe move forward with on the DL but the OL will all probably be gone in 2 or 3 years unless someone seriously improves. Don't call it a rebuild but this team will be completely different in 5 years other than Pickett, Pickens, and probably aging Watt and Minkah. I'm sure there are a couple more but this team has a loooooong way to go to get back to being seriously competitive year in and year out.

We have known for a long time that our "trench-war-fare" guys need upgrade. Our HC needs weapons so it has been delayed for quite some time now.

Thisteam, as any team, will only go as far as the trench workers will take them, both sides of the ball.

I think (could be wrong) but was DAVIS available round 1.20 and Humphry available 2.20, would have went a long ways, just sayiN but that is behind us.

We need to invest heavily in both trebches come draft day.

Jordan Davis is a huge difference maker for Philly. Any moron could have seen that he was 100% pro ready coming out of Georgia.

Instant run stuffer and pocket collapser. Even if he can only play 40% of the snaps his rookie season, that is a huge win. In future years, I'd play him at least 60% of the snaps or as many as he can handle. I'd love to land a stud like him at NT. It would solve so many other issues. Watt would blow by 20 sacks as teams would have to double the NT.

As great as Watt is, he worth even more to this team. Tomlin can't win without him. He's 0-6, soon to be 0-7.

Harris is not the back your looking for. He is a dud in the running game and passing game. The Steelers need a new starting back. Someone who can make a differnece. At least he's cheap for now on the salary cap. NO WAY does he get that big contact. The sooner the Steelers admit this, the better.

Davis was selected 13th overall.

The issue is that our coach doesn’t want a true runstuffing NT… he wants a hybrid DT that can be used as a pass rusher. Stopping the run was THE top priority in a DLB defense… its a secondary priority in the Tomlin defense

There is enough talent to stop the run, but as you said it just isn’t a priority. I don’t understand why they won’t adjust the scheme to focus more on stopping the run.
