Three possible quarterback options for next season

I think this part is misunderstood. I don't think Tomlin is against drafting a talented QB. I do think, however, that he is against starting the drafted QB right away. Kind of like when Faneca was asked if he was excited about Ben and he said (paraphrasing): "No. Do you want to go to work with some kid fresh out of college?".
That's how I took things as well. They've spent a lot of time looking at Howell. I could also see them going after a guy like Malik Willis. If the Steelers would take a rookie, how would you rank them? Not just talent, but round you would take them.

Matt Corral
Kenny Pickett
Malik Willis
Carson Strong
Desmond Ridder
Sam Howell

Pickett isn't getting much better than he is right now. He will be a career backup/spot starter in the NFL. You can get those guys in the 4th/5th round. No way do I waste time on any QB in this draft.

Hard to assume anything like that.I've seen tons and tons of top 10 qb picks over the years who looked like *** in the NFL. All hyped up, big college programs, big stats. Get drafted high, then fizzle.

It's hard to find that guy no matter what.

Of course it's hard to find that guy. A guy like Pickett would not be nearly as high if it was a good year for QB's, but that doesn't make him a good NFL QB. He was in a pass heavy offense with a great WR. Teams are desperate and he will capitalize on it. I just hope we aren't the suckers.

I think a lot of these QBs are getting drafted beyond their talent, experience, intangibles lately. It just feels like teams are drafting them and hoping they somehow become worthy of the pick. This draft feels like that to me. There's not one on that list I think is a true first rounder (but, I'm not a GM and don't pretend to have their experience/knowledge/evaluation skills). That said, I think some will be 1st round picks.

Coral - Late first
Pickett - He'll be the first QB off the board and I'm glad it won't be the Steelers picking him.
Willis - 2nd round
Strong - 2nd round
Ridder - 2nd - 3rd round
Howell - Mid first

* The Draft Sim I'm using keeps showing Brennan Armstrong (Virginia) as a 1st round prospect. I've never seen him play. Anyone have any insight?

I don't want Pickett at all for one reason - scouts say he has small hands. Ben had the biggest of course and those pump fakes worked because of it. Unlikely we'll ever see anyone like him again in that regard, but small handed QBs like Pickett suffer a lot of fumbles, struggle in bad weather and rarely make it on a consistent level..

I don't care for Willis. Strong and Ridder are interesting to me but not round 1 interesting. Pickett has turnover question marks and Corral is a little on the short side. List looks pretty accurate but I would move Willis down. I know most draft sites won't. I would like to see Strong and Ridder with a better supporting cast.

And what is the NFL? It's pass heavy happy crazy with great wide receivers. Well we will surely see if he does the combine and what the scouts feel. I'd certainly trust them over fans, myself included.

YES! I may be the biggest supporter of Brennan Armstrong on this board.

He was leading the nation in passing until he broke his ribs in the game against BYU October 30th. Pretty good chance he would have finished as the nations leading passer had he not got injured. He missed the following weeks game against Notre Dame and Virginia didn't play their bowl game because of COVID. He was under consideration for the Heisman untill he was injured. One of the big reason I believe Armstrong's name isn't included with the others mentioned is because of Virginia's record. They finished 6-6. Despite Armstrong putting up big numbers each week, Virginia's defense was one of the worst in the country. It seemed each week Armstrong had to put his team on his back every game. No quarterback meant more for their team than Brennan Armstrong. It was quite evident in the Notre Dame game when he didn't play.

He is a redshirt senior next season but he has submitted paperwork to the NFL to gauge where the scouts think he would be drafted. As of today, he hasn't delcared for the draft as he is still waiting on the NFL evaluation. His former coach at Virginia, Bronco Mendenhall, was quoted a few weeks ago from his sources in the NFL, "“The letter will say, recommend for him to come back to school, and continue to break every passing record and winning record in the galaxy,” says Mendenhall, “and then go on and win Super Bowls, and be in the Pro Bowl, and everything else you’re going to do, after one more year of college.”

Virginia has a new head coach, offensive coordinator and lost most of their starting offensive line through the transfer portal. So, if he stays for another year, who knows if he puts up the same numbers he did this season. He still has weapons as WR. If he stays, it is my hope the Steelers end up drafting him in 2023. It would be a dream come true to have BA in the Black & Gold.

For the record, I am not a UVA fan. I'm a fan of Brennan Armstrong.

I think that is why he isn't talked about not knowing if he is coming out. For the record I like the kid from Ben to Bren doesn't sound bad. I would look at him round 2. Or if they love him a trade down in 1. If he was available I would throw him to the top of the list. I just was under the impression he would go back for another year...

Well, it looks like I'll have to dig into Brennan Armstrong!

I think he has a little of everything you look for. Accuracy, mobility, and deep ball capable. Plus he isn't a shrimp. Not BigBen tall but adequate height. Little bit of a under the radar type like was mentioned due to the win loss record and whether he is declaring.

That's like saying garbage is a level above trash.

Would rather let Haskins have a shot -- he may be a knucklehead but he's got talent. And TBH, they already know today if he's done the work required to even be considered for a shot. Showing up on time, in shape, etc. If he's still a knucklehead, we won't need to wait till next season to find out.
I would rather have trash that plays hard than a knucklehead who has no work ethic which is the knock on Haskins.

cost to move up to get Kenny if he is top 10 from 17-20 might be 1,3,5,6, that's too much unless you give this year's 1st and next year's future picks as we need our picks.
Another QB to consider Willis Electric very mobile, strong arm, can be deadly in an RPO system similar to the one Lamar RG and Mahomes have, you get Bridgewater Foles or Minshew to watch and adapt while the staff builds a system around him.
Ridder has great size and accuracy 68% solid frame and arm could be a great day 2 diamond in the rough.

I'd draft Pickett or no qb at all. I wouldn't break the bank on any 35+ year old qb either, not unless I was fairly certain I had a championship level team.

I'd probably go the very unsexy route and draft either OL or DL round one. Though that big monster Davis no.99 for Georgia would look fantastic on the Steelers defensive line.
Agree on Pickett but didn't you hear? Aaron Rodgers is coming because he likes Mike Tomlin.

Yes he said telepathically to me that he will sign a 4/5 year contract in the off-season. Said something about Pittsburgh is exactly where pedigrees of his stature belongs obviously. He looks forward to unleashing hell and checking out our state of the art laboratory.

if you want to go with a backup as the starter next season

Get Case Keenum off the browns

if wentz were cut, I would definitely kick the tires and see what happens
Case Keenum is a pud

Anyone know what Mike Tomzak is doing these days?
He coaches and helps raise his kids. Sometimes he runs around the coffee table in a panic before he realizes that this Oline is not his Oline. Then has a sigh of relief obviously.

I think we/they have to get out of the mindset of we need to be entertained next year with 9 or 10 wins instead of 5 or 6. There isn't one guy on that list that is EVER gonna win you a Superbowl. Ever. Build the infrastructure of a great future team and give ultra cheap Rudolph a chance while you clear off the last of Ben's money. Then in 2023 if Rudolph has failed you will draft your QB. Historically there isn't usually two ****** draft classes in a row. When you get your guy in 2023 then you can grab one of these stop gaps to play while the draft pick learns.
1. Don't get a stop gap.
2. Don't draft a qb this year.
3. Get an option on Rudolph because you never know.

I said the same thing about him a few weeks or so ago. He does wear gloves though. I have never seen him without them. I would assume that helps with his grip. An article I was reading those weeks back mentioned either Pickett or some other QB who would actually wear 2 gloves on their throwing hand. That is a bit ridiculous. One glove would be OK if it helps him grip the ball better but 2 gloves just seems like you could be opening up other problems. But, whatever they need to make things work, I guess. Some team will take a shot on him in the 1st round.

I'm not advocating for him but why the Minshew hate? He was a winner when he played for a **** Jaguars team. His stats look good. I believe he is somewhat mobile - at least no worse than Ben or Rudolph. And, he's young and still has upside. So, what is it?

I’d take a flyer on Stetson Bennett in the 6-7 range and sit back and laugh as he beats out the current returning QB options or a bridge vet

No early QB until we solidly both LOS
