Well first, I wouldn’t call myself “Coach” since I have knowledge/confidence of the game and my ego doesn’t need it. Second, a letter grade of an 18 year career with almost 180 wins and a .635 W/L %? Thats third behind Belicheat and Andy (active coaches with at least 15 years). He will eclipse Noll’s record and reach 200 wins well before he decides to retire. Has a SB, been to two. Most likely a HOF….a letter grade would be kind of superfluous. Now letter grades in aspects of his coaching, that is a more reliable measurement. Historical Win/Loss rate, is probably an A. Defense has always been strong, but he’s had the right players for the scheme which routinely rated in the top of the league. I’d say a B+. Offensively, you have to separate it from “Ben/After Ben”. They were prolific with Ben during Arians and Haley’s reign, had the players that complemented Ben. A with Ben, a D without (Oh’ Canada, of which he hired is the cause), which makes his W/L% during that period amazing. Playoffs he’s has a D and that’s because he’s been to two SB. Without them it’s an F. Plain and simple. He’s got to start winning to conference championships and SBs. Challenges, well it was subjective until Riveron was canned. But Tomlin’s average is 42% when the league has been between 40-49% since the challenge rule was instituted. Of course this is all subjective regardless, because 75% of games are decided by players the other 25% a mixture of coaching/preparation and of course officiating.
What I find hilarious is the comment regarding Tomlin’s “coach speak”. Every, and I mean EVERY coach speaks a lot, but says nothing. Thats part of not giving anything away to your opponent in order to win games. Have you never listened to Belichick? Hell, Cowher was worse with his coach speak. Dulac, Bouchette, Pruista and Savran all used to comment on the amount of “useless” rather than useful statements of his conferences. Plus Cowher had gag orders on players regarding their injuries, they were exclusively forbidden to discuss them with the press, until Goodell required all players to be available to media, except in certain circumstances.
