A lot of people fixate on mistakes, like his issues with correctly throwing a challenge flag, but those people all miss his game to game consistency in time management, player preparation (especially in injury, next man up situations), and succeeding through difficult team situations that would absolutely turn a winning team into a basement dweller. He navigates the locker room, eliminates selfish players quickly, and helps to recruit NFL talent that wants to play for him.
You have every right to not like a coach for whatever reason you want, but you don't consistently win this long in the league by being a bad coach.
I have no personal problem with Tomlin, Out of all the head coaches in the NFL he is the one I'd most likely want to have a beer with. Seems like a cool charismatic guy.
I can give him credit when credit is due, like him Putting Russ in over fields for example.
I get it, at 5-2 everyone is on the Tomlin train. I'm thrilled too, but I'm not delusional, this feels alot like the year we started 11-0 or whatever it was?
I just cannot ignore the big picture, no losing seasons is an accomplishment. When no losing seasons becomes the biggest defense against criticism, At that point it's like bragging about getting a diet coke with you're fast food. Diet coke will save you some calories but it really means zero.
Since 2011 Tomlin is 3-8 in the playoffs with a Hall of fame QB and the NFL #1WR and #1RB. Brown and Bell were not just #1 they were historically good.
Bell averaged 128+ yards from scrimmage per game for his entire career as a Steeler. Most in nfl history 2013-2017
Brown was #1 in Receptions 821, Receiving yards 11,400, and TD 74 from 2011-2018
837 rec, the second most receptions in league history through his first 9 seasons as a Steeler.
The second fastest WR in history to hit 11,000 yds (129 games)
The first and only player to have 100 receptions in six straight seasons
1 of 5 WR in history to have 100 rec and 15 TD in a season
Tomlin's Steelers have given up the most points in NFL history over the last 5 playoff losses. average of 40.5
What other coach can say they lost a playoff game to Tebow, Bortles and Mayfield?
Tomlins "next man up" is a good buzzword for the press. In reality the Steelers are 1-10 without TJ Watt
He's won nothing in 15+ years with historically good players, While laying the biggest playoff eggs that have ever been laid.
Tomlin is an above average coach with some real gifts, but winning when it counts is not his strong suit. Nothing personal, just the facts.
