Offensive line to be multiple under Munchak

LATROBE, Pa. -- As the Pittsburgh Steelers' defensive linemen walked from an auxiliary practice field to the main one Monday afternoon at St. Vincent College, John Mitchell delivered a terse message.

“No excuses today,” the longtime Steelers’ defensive line coach said.

Mitchell had fumed the previous day as he watched the offense gash the defense on running plays. But the success of the ground game may have had as much to do with varied blocking schemes as it did the youth the Steelers have along their defensive line.

“We’re not locked into one [scheme] and the defensive guys at practice even notice it,” Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey said. “We’re doing different things and I think it’s going to help us out tremendously.”

Right tackle Marcus Gilbert agreed.

“I was telling Maurkice that this year is so much better,” the fourth-year veteran said. “Now we have so many dimensions to our game that you don’t know what’s going to come and I think that’s going to benefit us this year, open us a lot of holes for us.”

The Steelers will be multiple up front under Mike Munchak, and the first-year Steelers offensive line coach has not hesitated to incorporate different schemes on a young but experienced offensive line.

“I think when you have guys that are smart, that are athletic, that can do a lot of things, it gives you a lot of options no matter what offense we decide to run,” Munchak said. “There will be concepts that -- gap concept, zone concept -- we’re going to have those concepts in so it makes it a little harder for the defense if you can do a lot of different things.”

LeBeau likes Steelers' speed on defense

LATROBE, Pa. -- Dick LeBeau said the Pittsburgh Steelers’ improved speed on defense is undeniable. But the longtime defensive coordinator also offered a caveat when assessing how that will translate on the field this season.

“We can run a race with anybody in the NFL,” LeBeau said. “The problem is it ain’t a race. It’s a football game.”

The Steelers' speed should help the defense reduce the number of big plays it allows this season. Five touchdowns against the Steelers last season covered at least 60 yards, an unheard of number for a LeBeau-coached defense.

Players not staying in their proper gaps was the biggest reason, LeBeau said, that the Steelers were susceptible to big plays last season. An upgrade in speed should help the Steelers overcome times when their players are caught out of position, something that is bound to happen with some of the inexperience the team has on defense.

Despite the youth on a defense that is in transition, LeBeau said he won’t scale back on what the Steelers do this season.

“We’ve already got a large percentage of the defense in,” LeBeau said. “There is a considerable percentage of it that is new.”

As for his overall thoughts on the Steelers’ defense more than halfway through training camp, LeBeau said, “A coach is never happy with what he’s looking at but I am happy with the work ethic. I feel good about this group. They’re a good bunch of men and they’re not averse to hard labor. They’ve got a lot of athletic talent.”

Merrill Hoge just said that Johnnie didn't even understand the offense at Texas A&M. He even showed a play where he was suppose to throw the ball on a certain read and just ran for no reason. I don't like running QBs because most always have that "I'll run if I get in trouble" mentality. I've watched him for 2 years and IMHO he has a very limited chance of being an NFL QB. Terrible footwork, bad reads and almost no understanding of the offense.

I think it's going to end badly for Johnny, but that he will probably enjoy a burst of success or two that gets Cleveland fans believing he's the second coming. It can work for awhile to have a QB that gets by on athleticism...heck, Vince Young led the Titans into the playoffs on the heels of a long winning streak (6 games?)...but it does stop working at some point.

Steelers' Camp Report: Day 10

LATROBE, Pa. -- A daily review of the hot topics coming out of Pittsburgh Steelers training camp:

The Steelers had their worst practice of training camp and coach Mike Tomlin did not gloss over the fact that the drills were lacking in both energy and urgency. "A little sloppy, some pre-snap penalties on defense, too many dropped balls on offense," Tomlin said Wednesday. Wide receiver Markus Wheaton and tight end Heath Miller were among those who dropped passes that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger put right on their hands. Cornerback Ike Taylor dropped an interception that Roethlisberger threw right to him. "I acknowledge from time to time that you're going to have those days but you can't like it and you can't stack them one after another," Tomlin said.
The Steelers play their first preseason game Saturday night and their uninspired practice came a day after the players were off. Not that Tomlin wanted to entertain the notion that the timing of Wednesday's practice, sandwiched where it was, may have contributed to its drop in quality. "I don't care what created it. The issue for us is not to stack those days, to make sure that we come out here with the mentality that we're going to thrive and not survive," said Tomlin, whose team visits the New York Giants on Saturday. "I think we had too many survivors today, guys just looking to get through it. We're going to challenge this group to come back out and have a more productive today tomorrow."
Nose tackle Steve McLendon did not practice again Wednesday as he is recovering from a concussion. Tomlin did little to address inside linebacker Ryan Shazier's injury. Shazier missed his second consecutive practice and he watched drills with his right knee wrapped. Tomlin again called it a "boo boo." Shazier limped off the field near the end of practice Sunday and he still appeared to be walking gingerly. Outside linebacker Jarvis Jones (groin) did not practice, and he has only practiced just one time since last Friday. Defensive end Cameron Heyward and right tackle Marcus Gilbert left practice Wednesday with what Tomlin called minor injuries. Both, Tomlin said, will practice Thursday. Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey returned from a concussion that had sidelined him
Sean Spence again played weakside inside linebacker with the first-team defense in place of Shazier. Rookie Stephon Tuitt played left defensive end with Cam Thomas moving to nose tackle to cover for McLendon's absence. Mike Adams played first-team right tackle after Gilbert got hurt.
The Steelers made a roster move, signing wide receiver James Shaw and putting wide receiver Danny Coale on the waived/injured list. Shaw just finished playing for the Pittsburgh Power and their season ended earlier this week when they lost in the Arena Fooball League playoffs. Shaw spent parts of last season on the Carolina Panthers' practice squad.

LATROBE — Landry Jones would certainly love to take snaps in the regular season. But realistically, as a third-string quarterback, he’s well aware that it would only be in a worst-case scenario.

Beginning Saturday night against the Giants, the preseason is likely the most playing time he’ll receive this season. Jones says he plans to make the most of it.

“For me, it’s kind of like the regular season,” Jones said. “I take it very serious. It’s time to go out there and make plays. Just establish yourself and show what you can do on game day. I’m not an established guy like Ben (Roethlisberger) is. It’s kind of an opportunity to show what you can do out there.”

Last preseason Jones infamously fumbled his first snap into the end zone for a safety. He said it wasn’t a case of nerves but rather a rookie — the fourth-rounder was the highest a Steelers quarterback was selected in the draft since Roethlisberger in 2003 — struggling with the speed of the NFL.

Inactive for all 16 games last year, Jones enters this preseason more confident in his throws and in his knowledge of the playbook. Obviously, Jones would like to succeed Bruce Gradkowski as Roethlisberger’s understudy, but he’ll first have to show that he’s capable.

“I just want to perform the way I know I’m capable of performing,” he said. “Where the chips fall, they fall. Whatever the coach wants, whatever the coach decides, then that’s what they’re going to do. I don’t have much control over that situation.”

NOTEWORTHY

— Although the Browns announced on Wednesday that Brian Hoyer will start Cleveland’s preseason opener, Steelers offensive coordinator Dick LeBeau expects that it’ll be Johnny Manziel under center when the regular season opens Sept. 7 at Heinz Field. In a wide-ranging session with reporters, LeBeau said that he was impressed with Manziel’s college career and his ability to make plays and keep the play alive against stout SEC defenses. “I’m not coaching Cleveland,” the 76-year-old said. “I don’t know what they’re going to do. I’m just telling you what I’m doing.”

--Among many duties, Derek Moye was also the kicker during his high school days at Rochester. That, however, has basically been the extent of his experience on special teams since. That could change as Moye is hoping to get some work as a gunner on the punt team beginning Saturday. A strong showing there could go a long way in determining Moye’s case for a spot on the 53-man roster. He currently finds himself in a tight battle for the fifth — and likely last — receiver spot. Moye excelled in the preseason last year and is eager to do it again. “The games are something different,” Moye said. “You always look forward to the game and have the opportunity to show what you can do. People watch it on TV, people watch in the stands. It’ll be good getting some different competition out there.”

— As expected, the Steelers signed former Pittsburgh Power (Arena Football League) WR James Shaw on Wednesday. Shaw spent parts last season on Carolina’s practice squad. WR Danny Coale (finger) was placed on waived/injured.

INJURY UPDATE

— Mike Tomlin confirmed that NT Steve McLendon, who missed his fourth straight practice, is dealing with a concussion. McLendon ran on the side.

— DE Cam Heyward and RT Marcus Gilbert left practice early with minor injuries but are expected back today.

— Rookie LB Ryan Shazier missed his second straight day with what Tomlin is continuing to call a “boo-boo.” Must’ve been a helluva boo-boo.

— WR Lance Moore, LB Jarvis Jones and LG Ramon Foster also sat out.

— WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (concussion) returned to practice.

UNDER THE ROPES

— Tomlin was none too pleased with Wednesday’s sloppy practice, citing dropped passes and pre-snap penalties. “I acknowledge that, time to time, you’re going to have those days, but you can’t like it and you can’t stack them one after another,” Tomlin said.

— The most energy showed at Chuck Noll Field was by one particularly animated fan who yelled throughout.

— Markus Wheaton had a particularly bad drop on a long pass from Roethlisberger down the right sideline.

— Roethlisberger wasn’t pleased with WR Martavis Bryant after having another pass batted down. “Keep coming back to the ball!” Roethlisberger yelled at the rookie.

— After CB Ike Taylor dropped an easy interception, the veteran dropped and did 10 pushups on the spot.

— RB Dri Archer worked with the wide receivers.

— With LG Ramon Foster absent, Chris Hubbard took first-team reps. Mike Adams filled in for RT Marcus Gilbert. LB Sean Spence filled in for Shazier, while LB Chris Carter spotted Jarvis Jones.

— Chris Elkins (Beaver Falls) continues to work at center and left guard.

— Former QB Byron Leftwich paid a visit.

BY THE NUMBERS

9-9: Giants coach Tom Coughlin’s all-time record against the Steelers.

QUOTEWORTHY

“At those positions we can run a race with anybody in the NFL. The problem is at ain’t a race, it’s a football game.” — Dick LeBeau, defensive coordinator, on team’s linebackers.

I'll tell you what. I'm tired of this "boo boo" **** from Tomlin. I know all coaches downplay injuries and never tell the truth, but he's just being a condescending *** hole who thinks we're all stupid.

AROUND THE STEELERS

• Rookie receiver Martavis Bryant lined up across from Sammy Watkins, college football's best receiver, last season at Clemson. Now he's occasionally opposite Pro Bowl receiver Antonio Brown. “He's a big-time pro and he carries himself like a pro,” Bryant said. “(He) keeps me motivated. He's teaching me the game as I grow.

•Kicker Shaun Suisham must adjust Saturday against the Giants to the 33-yard extra point experiment and taller uprights (35 feet, not 30). “I'm looking forward to seeing the uprights — a little taller, a little different look,” he said. “It's a little change being back to the 33, certainly this time of year I'm not suggesting it's a difficult kick, but it certainly is different than we've all become accustomed to.”

•Defensive lineman Steve McLendon missed a fourth consecutive practice Wednesday; both he and WR Darrius Heyward-Bey are recovering from concussions. LB Ryan Shazier, RT Marcus Gilbert and DE Cam Heyward sat out with minor ailments. Coach Mike Tomlin wasn't happy with a practice filled with penalties and dropped passes, saying, “We've got to come out with the mentality we're going to thrive instead of survive. We had too many survivors, guys looking to get through it.

•The Power's early exit from the Arena League playoffs allowed the Steelers to sign wide receiver James Shaw, a former Jacksonville State player who spent part of last season on the Carolina Panthers' practice squad. Shaw caught 21 passes for the Power, three for TDs, during the season. WR Danny Coale was waived injured.

•Defensive end Brian Arnfelt was a three-time All-Big Ten academic team member at Northwestern, so it's probably not a surprise that Heyward said, “He overthinks some stuff. But he's put in a lot of work this offseason with me. He's a student of the game. He wants to learn a lot. He's never satisfied with what he's doing.”

Camp schedule

Thursday: 3 p.m.

Friday: No practice.

Saturday: Steelers at New York Giants, 7:30 p.m.

INSIDE THE ROPES

• For the second time in training camp, the Steelers worked on their no huddle offense. This time, however, the period was focused on screens and dump offs to the running backs. With Ben Roethlisberger directing the first team, his first play was a screen pass to Le'Veon Bell in which he dropped. Bell then bounced outside for some good yards before a dump off to LeGarrette Blount went for a minimal game. Roethlisberger tried another screen on the fourth play of the period but decided to scramble instead for no gain. The final play for the first team resulted in a first-down pass on an out pattern to Antonio Brown with Ike Taylor in coverage.

• For the first time this year, the Steelers didn't live tackle during the first team drill of the day thus allowing Troy Polamalu to participate. Polamalu has yet to take part in any live drills. The second team was instructed by Mike Tomlin to tackle.

• Chris Carter got the call at first team outside linebacker with Jarvis Jones missing practice. Arthur Moats replaced Jones during the last practice. Rookie defensive end Stephon Tuitt, linebacker Sean Spence and right tackle Mike Adams also received first-team reps. Marcus Gilbert injured his foot in individual drills that forced Adams into the top unit.

• Spence was beaten across the formation on a drag route by Heath Miller. Spence answered on the next play by stringing out Blount on an outside run and tackling him for a loss.

• Twice following a team 11 on 11 period, the Steelers ran ‘dynamite,' a play for the field goal block unit that signifies the offense is trying to kick a long field goal at the end of the half/game, and the block unit needs to get on the field immediately.

• Brown had a play that made Taylor look bad. Brown caught a short curl route, faked one way, went the other and broke loose into the open field. Taylor tried to run him down from behind, but Brown made a cut around the 10-yard line that fooled Taylor and put Brown into the end zone.

• During 11 on 11, Roethlisberger overthrew a pass intended for Brown right into Taylor's hands. Immediately after the ball thumped off Taylor's hands, he dropped and did 10 pushups on his knuckles.

• Tomlin liked the speed for mammoth nose tackle Daniel McCullers. Roethlisberger dumped a pass off to Tauren Poole over the middle. One of the first players who got to Poole was the 6-7, 352-pound McCullers prompting Tomlin to say: “Good hustle, 7-4.”

• The Steelers practiced the kickoff return with the personnel that will likely be used during Saturday's preseason game against the Giants. Shamarko Thomas and Antwon Blake were the gunners with Terence Garvin, Vince Williams, Chris Carter, Matt Spaeth, Michael Palmer, Cody Wallace, Will Johnson, Poole and Dri Archer.

• Rookie offensive lineman Wesley Johnson continued to struggle. Johnson, playing left tackle during pass blocking drills with the defense, got beat bad by Garvin twice. Garvin used a spin move then used a stutter step outside/inside to beat Johnson.

• Another practice and another impressive play by rookie Martavis Bryant. Bryant hauled in a long pass down the left sideline from Landry Jones during a no-huddle period. It was the third consecutive practice that Bryant has made a significant play during a scrimmage.

BLOG

The Steelers are preparing for Johnny Manziel to be the Browns quarterback Sept. 7 at Heinz Field. It's not because of any inside intelligence, but because defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau said they simply must do so. “He was playing against some real talented athletes in that (Southeastern) conference. They were getting up there around 45 to 50 points a game, so the quarterback must be doing something right. I'm not coaching Cleveland. I don't know what they're going to do. I'm just telling you what I'm doing.”

If Manziel starts next month, his only NFL game footage will be a few quarters' worth of preseason work. LeBeau wouldn't say how a game plan would differ if Brian Hoyer starts, but he said Manziel's ability to extend plays is worrisome – remember, the rebuilding Steelers defense gave up 11 plays of 50 yards or more last season.

THE BUZZ

HALEY OUTDUELS ROETHLISBERGER

Todd Haley never played football past high school, but the offensive coordinator showed that he has a pretty accurate arm.

Haley took part in the ‘garbage can' accuracy drill during practice where the points are given for throwing the ball in the can or hitting the 55-gallon garbage can placed 20 yards down the sidelines.

Typically, the competition is Haley, Ben Roethlisberger, Bruce Gradkowski, Landry Jones and Brendon Kay. On Wednesday, a special guest hopped in to a throw a ball or two — former quarterback Byron Leftwich.

It was Haley who came away with the victory. Typically, Roethlisberger runs away with the contest.

Leftwich, along with former defensive end Aaron Smith, was taking part in practice. Former Steelers linebacker Clark Haggans, center Justin Hartwig and offensive lineman Jeremy Parquett have also visited camp. — Mark Kaboly

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“I am not trying to prove anything to anyone. I am just trying to go out there and do my best. The only reason why I look in the past is to see where I don't want to be. That's how I am taking it this year. I always play with a chip on my shoulder. There is no grudge or anything. It just makes me motivated to be successful.”

—Nose tackle Steve McLendon

He did this last year with bell too didn't he? Remember being out of the loop as far as bells injury.

Lot of veterans coming into camp an helping out. I wonder why Hines hasn't made an appearance at camp? Use to be a great teacher and motivator.
