the more things change, the more they stay the same...

• During 11 on 11, Roethlisberger overthrew a pass intended for Brown right into Taylor's hands. Immediately after the ball thumped off Taylor's hands, he dropped and did 10 pushups on his knuckles.

But that's the new rule rule this year that converts a missed interception into 6 points for the defense, right? CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

LATROBE, Pa. -- A daily review of the hot topics coming out of Pittsburgh Steelers training camp:
Martavis Bryant continues to look like another rookie who will make an immediate impact for the Steelers. Bryant added another strong practice to his body of work on Thursday, catching a pair of touchdown passes, including a 24-yarder from Brendon Kay during a two-minute drill. The rangy and speedy Bryant also caught a perfectly thrown deep ball from Bruce Gradkowski during a sequence in which he made three consecutive receptions. Gradkowski had extra time to throw because linebacker Terence Garvin, who had a bead on the veteran quarterback, pulled up because there was no hitting. Gradkowski still led Bryant perfectly and the fourth-round pick beat cornerback Antwon Blake for the score.
It has been a tough camp physically for one of the young players who has been the talk of it. A week after Justin Brown broke his nose while blocking Shamarko Thomas, the second-year wide receiver appeared to hurt his left shoulder after getting dragged down by cornerback Brice McCain following a short reception. Brown resumed practicing after getting checked out by the trainers and made a couple of catches. But his shoulder appeared to be bothering him as the Steelers were winding down their final practice of the week.
No. 3 quarterback Landry Jones flashed the talent that made him a fourth-round pick in 2013 but also the inconsistency that hasn’t quelled questions about the former Oklahoma star. Jones threw a perfect spiral on a pass that hit Derek Moye right between the numbers during an 11-on-11 drill. A couple of plays later, he held on to the ball too long before taking off, causing offensive coordinator Todd Haley to say, “Throw that, Landry.” Jones also looked terrific at the start of the two-minute drill, completing three consecutive passes and moving the offense 27 yards to midfield. But the promising drive quickly fizzled and stalled on the defense’s 47-yard line.
Defensive end Cameron Heyward did not practice for the second consecutive day. With nose tackle Steve McLendon still out because of a concussion, Hebron Fangupo played nose tackle with the first-team defense with Cam Thomas at right end and rookie Stephon Tuitt at left end. Rookie nose tackle Daniel McCullers made a nice play during 11-on-11 when he crashed through the line and batted down a Kay pass.
Strong safety Troy Polamalu and wide receiver Antonio Brown were given the day off. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin did not address reporters after practice since he held a news conference Thursday morning, so there was no injury update. Tomlin, however, has said virtually nothing about injuries except when pressed about specific players. Even then, he has taken vague to a new level. Inside linebacker Ryan Shazier, whom Tomlin has twice said has a “boo boo,” missed his third consecutive practice since limping off the practice field Sunday with a right knee injury. Sean Spence again played weakside inside linebacker with the first-team defense in place of Shazier.
The Steelers will hold a walkthrough Friday morning and leave for the New York area in the afternoon. They play the New York Giants on Saturday night in East Rutherford, N.J. Kickoff for the preseason opener for each team is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.

Oh saw it. Concussion. What was the big mystery about that? I thought he said it wasn't medical and ask Tomlin?

Baron Batch once blocked James Harrison in practice.

Steelers notebook: Special teams coach Smith toughs it out

• Sh aun Suisham can't believe special teams coach Danny Smithhasn't missed a practice despite being badly shaken up while being rammed into a bench during a night practice last Friday. “He practices what he preaches. He took a real good shot, but he loves being out here,” Suisham said. “He's just like a player.”

• Mike Tomlin on what the Steelers need from Ben Roethlisberger in his 11th season: “Much like myself, Ben is going to be what this team needs him to be. I think we both embrace that responsibility.”

• Suisham's new contract runs through 2018 and is worth $12,575,000 at full value, including a $2.85 million signing bonus. His 2014 cap number of $1,722,500 remains the same, according to figures on file with the NFLPA. His base salary would be $2,595,000 in 2015, plus a $500,000 roster bonus, and $2.4 million each of the next three seasons.

• Smith on rookie punter Brad Wing, who will make his Steelers debut against the Giants: “You've got to have hang time, distance and placement. The good ones get two out of three, the great punters get three out of three and those guys who get one of the three are watching at home on TV.”

• The 2013 draft class played unevenly, with Jarvis Jones getting only one sack, Le'Veon Bell producing after finally getting healthy and Markus Wheaton sidelined for much of the year with broken fingers. “We expect those guys to be much better. It's the second lap around the track, if you will,” Tomlin said.

• Antonio Brown's work ethic is legendary among Steelers players, and for good reason. Long after every other player left the practice field Wednesday, Brown caught passes from a mechanical throwing machine, which normally is set at 40 mph. These appeared to be slightly faster.

Brown mimicked pedaling to his left, to his right and then backpedaling, catching 10 passes in quick succession each time. He then caught 10 with only his left hand while going to his left and 10 with only his right hand going to his right. He finished up with least 20 passes straight on. He didn't drop a single pass out of the dozens fired his way, perhaps why he allowed himself a big smile. “Sometimes I have to pull him off the practice field,” quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said.

• You have to have a fresh cut before the game, right? Coincidentally, fresh cut day for the Steelers also fell on the day CBS was on campus at St. Vincent taking head shots of players to go along with their weekly telecast of games. The Steelers have an unofficial barber who comes in a couple of days before games to give out haircuts. Last year, the barber was arranged by Ryan Clark. With Clark off to Washington via free agency, the onus of providing the barber fell on William Gay. Incidentally, Gay used the same barber Clark used last year. A number of players including Gay, Ike Taylor and Lawrence Timmons opted for the fresh cut in Rooney Hall on Thursday afternoon before the final practice before Saturday's game against the Giants.

Mike Tomlin didn't give an indication of how he will use his quarterbacks during Saturday's preseason game against the Giants. However, it appears Landry Jones will be quarterback in the game if the Steelers find themselves in a two-minute drill at the end of the first half. Jones was at quarterback for the two-minute drill Thursday that had 1:42 on the clock and the ball on the 23-yard line. Jones was able to move the offense (with Justin Brown, Markus Wheaton and Derek Moye at receivers) to their own 46-yard line before the drill ended. Jones was 5 of 8 for 30 yards and two first downs with a pair of completions to Moye and one each to Eric Water, Jordan Hall and David Paulson. Rookie Brendon Kay led the second unit to a touchdown.

• Martavis Bryant continues to have a solid second week of training camp. Bryant showed he can be a red zone threat earlier in the week and now showed he can be a deep threat as well. Bruce Gradkowski threw a deep ball down the middle of the field that Bryant hauled in over Antwon Blake for a touchdown during 11 on 11. One thing — linebacker Terence Garvin shot the A-gap and pulled up to let Gradkowski throw the ball. In a game, it was a sack.

• With Steve McLendon and Cam Heyward out of practice, the defensive line got shuffled around. Cam Thomas bounced back out to right defensive end after a couple of days at nose, with Loni Fangupo at nose and Stephon Tuitt at left defensive end.

• Will Johnson has been playing tight end, but he hasn't forgotten how to block from the fullback position. During a team competition period, Johnson filled the hole on a lead block that sprung LeGarrette Blount for a sizable gain.

• Dri Archer ran a couple of plays against the first-team defense. It didn't fare too well for the diminutive rookie. Vince Williams brought Archer down behind the line of scrimmage once, and Thomas shoved Archer violently to the ground with one hand on a stretch play later in practice.

• Typically, the last practice before a preseason game is the mild variety. Thursday was the first practice all training camp that no live tackling took place.

• With Antonio Brown sitting out of practice (coach's decision), Justin Brown moved into his slot. Justin Brown has played all three receiver positions in camp so far.

• Tomlin wasn't happy when Moye dropped a pass during no-huddle 7 on 7. Even though the pass was a little behind him as he came across the field, Tomlin barked: “Come on D. Moye.”

• Todd Haley was not happy when running back Miguel Maysonet failed to pick up a blitzing Garvin. “You are going to get the quarterback killed. You can't play if you can't protect him,” Haley screamed. Incidentally, Bryant hauled in the pass by Gradkowski.

• Rookie nose tackle Daniel McCullers showed some athletic ability when he bulled through two would-be blockers and slapped Jones' pass to the ground.

• The first kickoff coverage unit for the Steelers was Justin Brown, Brice McCain, Antwon Blake, Sean Spence, Terence Garvin, Will Johnson, Vince Williams, Shamarko Thomas, Isaiah Green, Robert Golden and Shaun Suisham.

Kaboly: Does Tuitt have the ‘integrity’ to start right away?
August 7, 2014 by Mark Kaboly

Rookie defensive lineman Stephon Tuitt has impressed early in training camp.
Mike Tomlin absolutely loves Stephon Tuitt, and really, when have you heard Mike Tomlin gush over anybody?
When was the last time you heard Dick LeBeau praise a rookie, let alone a rookie two weeks into training camp?
Usually it goes something like this when you bring up rookies to LeBeau: “It’s not a defense you can come in and play right away. I will never apologize for my defense being hard to learn” or something along those lines.
Yeah, the rookie second-round pick out of Notre Dame has been that impressive two weeks into camp.
Impressive enough to shove Cam Thomas – a guy they gave $4 million over two years in the offseason to play end – to nose tackle to fill in for the concussed Steve McLendon so Tuitt can get reps with the first team.
Thursday will be the fifth consecutive practice that Tuitt lines up at left defensive end with the first team. It is almost assured that he will start Saturday’s first preseason game against the Giants.
This is about when and where we should temper the enthusiasm on Tuitt … at least for now.
Defensive ends in LeBeau’s 3-4 scheme very well could be the most difficult position to learn because of the discipline needed to be successful.
How many times have you heard “gap integrity” or “gap sound” come out of somebody’s mouth. It’s a real thing and it can be devastating, especially to a 3-4 defense.
What is gap inegrity? What that means is that for LeBeau’s defense to stop the run, everybody needs to be in a specific place. If you deviate from your gap assignment, it usually results in a pretty significant gain.
What makes it difficult for a defensive end like Tuitt – or any young defensive lineman — is to be discipline enough to be where you are supposed to be rather than where you think you should be.
How many times did you see Brett Keisel out of his gap over his career, and he’s one of the best to play for LeBeau.
Get out of your gap and the integrity of the defense is shot.
Gap integrity is not easy. Tuitt was a playmaker at Notre Dame and to shove that down the list of priorities for him won’t be a walk in the park.
Now, Tuitt was a pretty good with his gaps in Notre Dame’s 3-4, but this is a whole new level, as we all know.
So, maybe we all should be listening to defensive line coach John Mitchell right now instead of Tomlin or LeBeau. Mitchell told TribLive Radio’s Ken Laird last week: “We’ve been in camp five days and you guys want to make somebody out of something.”
Saying that, Tuitt is pretty good.
But remember, patience.
