LATROBE – Call it the training camp battle that wasn’t, at least according to Marcus Gilbert.

The Steelers’ right tackle saw the stories in the offseason that he and Mike Adams would compete for a starting spot in training camp this season and laughed.

“I don’t know where that was coming from,” Gilbert said. “I never considered it a competition.”

That’s not a knock on Adams. Gilbert just felt that good after playing all 16 games in 2013 after an ankle injury in 2012 limited him to just five starts.

The Steelers like what they’ve seen of the fourth-year pro as well.

At the beginning of training camp at Saint Vincent College, general manager Kevin Colbert said the Steelers were targeting Gilbert, placekicker Shaun Suisham, cornerback Cortez Allen and linebacker Jason Worilds for contract extentions.

Suisham’s deal was completed by the end of the first full week of training camp and the team is closing in on a deal with Gilbert that will keep the 26-year-old in Pittsburgh beyond the 2014 season.

“Different deals take different time,” Gilbert said. “But I want to be here.”

The Steelers have seen that throughout the offseason and training camp.

Gilbert is having, perhaps, his best training camp, holding down the right tackle spot on what could be a much-improved offensive line.

“He’s looked really good,” said guard David DeCastro. “He’s healthy. We’re all healthy. But him, especially, he’s looking good.”

A second-round draft pick in 2011, Gilbert wound up making 13 starts at right tackle that season in place of injured Willie Colon, winning the Joe Greene Great Performance Award given to the team’s top rookie.

But Gilbert injured his knee in the 2012 opener at Denver, then a right ankle injury eventually landed him on injured reserve.

He was healthier in 2013, starting all 16 games – the only Steelers lineman to do so - at right tackle.

His injury opened the door for Adams, a 2012 second-round draft pick, to start six games that season at right tackle before he went down with an ankle injury as well.

The Steelers tried Adams at left tackle in 2013 but he was pulled in favor of Kelvin Beachum four games into the season.

That’s why the news of a training camp competition at right tackle with Adams was news to him.

“Those (starting jobs) were guy’s jobs to lose,” said DeCastro. “We feel like we have a pretty good group, it was going to be set, unless somebody really made a jump.”

That hasn’t happened, and the Steelers feel comfortable with their starting five of Gilbert and Kelvin Beachum at tackle, DeCastro and Ramon Foster at guard and Maurkice Pouncey at center.

Unlike previous training camps, where there were one or more starting jobs open on the line, the Steelers hope having a settled line will allow the unit to build on what it did in the second half of 2013. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was sacked just 11 times in the final eight games.

“I helps,” DeCastro said. “It’s allowing us to gel more as a group. We know each other really well, especially Marcus and I on the right side.”

Odds and end zones
Rookie linebacker Ryan Shazier, the team’s top draft pick, returned to practice Monday on a limited basis. Shazier missed the past week and preseason opener with a knee injury but plans on playing in the team’s preseason game Saturday against Buffalo. … Tight end Matt Spaeth and safety Mike Mitchell were given the day off. … Tight end Michael Palmer (ankle) and wide receiver Justin Brown (thumb) sat out with injuries. … The Steelers on Monday waived running back Juwan Jamison but did not make a corresponding move to replace him on the roster. … The Steelers are off today.

Steelers' Martavis Bryant a work in progress

By Scott Brown | August 12, 2014 11:00:28 AM PDT
LATROBE, Pa. -- Pittsburgh Steelers' Martavis Bryant could not have played the role of talented but raw wide receiver any better than he did last Saturday night at MetLife Stadium.

AP Photo/Keith Srakocic
Despite a roller-coaster of a first preseason game, Steelers rookie receiver Martavis Bryant continues to work on his development in camp.
Bryant botched the catch on a punt return and, fortunately for the Steelers, was able to fall on the ball. He wasn't as lucky when the Steelers were mounting a late drive.

Bryant caught a 14-yard pass that put the Steelers in New York territory, but when he got up to run after initially falling down he fumbled and the Giants recovered to seal a 20-16 win.

Bryant's missteps in the preseason opener were more glaring than any other player who suited up for the first time with the Steelers at the end of last week.

What also can't be overlooked, with the Steelers in their final week of training camp, is what Bryant potentially brings to a receiving corps that is lacking in size. He is 6-4 and 210 pounds and can run, and that blend allowed Bryant to draw a pass interference penalty on a deep ball in the fourth quarter against the Giants.

"He has the speed you can't coach, the size you can't coach," Steelers wide receivers coach Richard Mann said. "I think he's got a chance to help us, I really do."

And Mann is talking about this season.

Bryant is the wild card of a unit that is defined by youth as much as it is Pro Bowler Antonio Brown's individual brilliance.

The fourth-round pick could make an impact, particularly when the Steelers are near the end zone and his height really becomes an asset. Or Bryant, who is 22 and started only one season at Clemson, could need the NFL's equivalent of a redshirt year, one in which he makes the 53-man roster but rarely dresses for games.

"I think we're going through some growing pains with him but we knew that coming in because the guy hasn't played that much," Mann said. "He (started) one year in college and that's not an alibi but the truth."

Mann's task is staying on Bryant at practice and in meetings to accelerate his development while also staying patient with the player who left Clemson after three seasons to enter the NFL draft.

"What we've got to do is get him honed in, teach him how to do things. He's doing pretty good as far as learning it and having recall. He's just not doing it quite right all of the time," Mann said. "If we just keep on coaching him and spoon feeding him until we can get him to learn it, he does have the talent to be able to help us."

Steelers' Camp Report: Day 13

By Scott Brown | August 12, 2014 7:10:24 PM PDT
LATROBE, Pa. – A daily review of the hot topics coming out of Pittsburgh Steelers training camp:

Martavis Bryant stood out during one of the final practices of training camp even if he did not appear to impress his head coach. The rookie wide receiver caught a pair of touchdown passes in the red-zone drill, and he punctuated his day -- and that of the Steelers -- by hauling in a short scoring grab on the final play of practice despite coverage by cornerback Ike Taylor and strong safety Troy Polamalu. Bryant’s day, which also included a sideline catch that required him to get both feet down quickly, came just four days after the fourth-round draft pick was erratic with ball-control issues in the Steelers’ 20-16 loss to the New York Giants. “He made a couple of plays today but we know that he’s capable of that," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "I’m looking for him to grow in all areas and have the type of detail in his work where we can rely upon him. Like a lot of young guys he’s moving toward that. Not at a quick enough pace for us, not at a quick enough pace for him so we’ll continue to work.”
The Steelers’ punting situation remains a murky one even after the team placed Adam Podlesh on the reserve/did not report list on Tuesday. Podlesh has yet to practice with the Steelers since they reported to camp July 25 due to complications from his wife’s pregnancy. There apparently is no timetable as far as Podlesh re-joining the Steelers. “His status will remain (on the reserve list) until we hear otherwise,” Tomlin said. “Right now we’re working with Brad [Wing] and like the work that he’s doing.” Wing has been the only punter with the Steelers since camp started. When asked if the Steelers will bring in another punter with Podlesh’s status uncertain, Tomlin said, “Not that I’m opposed to it, but not as we stand here right now.”
Ben Roethlisberger unwittingly, picked the right defender to target when he unleashed his worst pass of the day. Roethlisberger threw a ball right at Taylor in an 11-on-11 drill and it sailed through the veteran cornerback’s hands. Tomlin, standing a few feet away, put his hands on his head and turned around to face the crowd at Chuck Noll Field for several seconds. Taylor’s drops have been well-documented and it has to be all mental at this point. He is too good of an athlete to consistently botch the easiest of catches.
Linebacker Vince Williams left practice with a possible concussion. Williams looked a little wobbly as two trainers walked him to a cart and then drove him off the practice fields so he could be evaluated. Left guard Ramon Foster (knee swelling) also did not finish practice. Tight end Michael Palmer, who had been out with an ankle injury, returned to practice and caught a touchdown pass in traffic during a 7-on-7 drills. Rookie linebacker Ryan Shazier (knee) did not do much beyond individual work.
The Steelers’ final two practices of camp will be joint ones with the Buffalo Bills. The two teams will practice Wednesday at St. Vincent College from 2:55 to 5:30 p.m. ET.

Three questions: Bills-Steelers practices

By Mike Rodak and Scott Brown | August 13, 2014 8:00:12 AM PDT
LATROBE, Pa. -- The Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers will hold two days of joint practices this week at St. Vincent College, which hosts the Steelers' training camp.

Wednesday's session will kick off at 2:55 p.m. ET, followed by a practice Thursday (5:30 p.m. ET) and a preseason game Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET) at Heinz Field.

To preview the joint practices, ESPN.com NFL Nation reporters Mike Rodak (Bills) and Scott Brown (Steelers) answer three questions on their teams.

Grant Halverson/Getty Images
Buffalo Bills fans will take note of how EJ Manuel practices against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
What has been your biggest storyline of camp?

Rodak: Far and away it's been the development of EJ Manuel. Entering his second season, the pressure is on Manuel to take the Bills to the playoffs. He has more help this season than he did as a rookie. The Bills, as we all know by now, traded their 2015 first-round pick to move up for Sammy Watkins, who has been everything as advertised so far. Watkins has been Manuel's best friend on the practice field, snagging everything thrown his way and stretching the defense vertically. While Watkins hasn't necessarily lit it up in preseason action (three catches for 21 yards in two games), there are no worries about him. The questions remain with Manuel and his abilities as a pocket passer. He took a step forward in last Friday's preseason win in Carolina, but he's been inconsistent in camp. Manuel can find Watkins for a big gain on one play, but then drive onlookers mad by patting the ball and taking a sack on the next play.

Brown: I’d have to say it is how much younger the Steelers have gotten, particularly on defense. Eight projected starters on that side of the ball are 27 years old or younger, and rookie Ryan Shazier has already won the starting job alongside Lawrence Timmons at inside linebacker. Shazier headlines a draft class that has created quite a buzz. Second-round pick Stephon Tuitt will start sooner rather than later at left defensive end. Third-round pick Dri Archer is an electric and versatile playmaker who will line up all over the field. Fourth-round pick Martavis Bryant, Watkins’ teammate at Clemson, has a chance to develop into a big-time wide receiver, and could help right away. I have eight of the nine Steelers’ 2014 draft picks making the 53-man roster, and the rookies have indeed shown that much promise during camp.

What is one important question that your team could answer in these joint practices?

Rodak: Is the offensive line's struggles simply a matter of practicing against their own, ferocious defensive line? The Bills' front line hasn't done a great job protecting Manuel in practices this summer. Outside of center Eric Wood, a team captain, there a question marks abound. Seventh-round pick Seantrel Henderson has filled in nicely for Cordy Glenn at left tackle, but he's been prone to rookie mistakes. Left guard Chris Williams is out with a back injury, while right guard Kraig Urbik -- a former Steeler -- is being pushed for his job by rookie Cyril Richardson. Finally, right tackle Erik Pears looks to have kept his starting job, but only by default, as second-round pick Cyrus Kouandjio has been a disappointment so far. The offensive line has been dominated at times by the Bills' defensive line, which had three Pro Bowlers last season ( Mario Williams, Kyle Williams, and Marcell Dareus). If they have breakdowns against the Steelers' defensive line, which will bring a different 3-4 look, then their protection issues extend beyond the talent across the ball in Buffalo.

AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar
Center Maurkice Pouncey is one of the high draft picks the Pittsburgh Steelers have used on the offensive line in recent years.
Brown: How much improvement the Steelers have made along the offensive line. I can’t remember the last times hopes were this high for the Steelers’ offensive line, and that is due to the investment they have made in a unit that general manager Kevin Colbert used to be accused of neglecting. Since 2010 the Steelers have used two first-round draft picks and two second-rounds selections on their offensive line and three of those players will start this season. The Steelers also hired offensive line coach Mike Munchak last January, and he is expected to bring everything together up front. The first-team offensive line played well in limited snaps in the Steelers’ preseason opener last Saturday night. Now the coaches get to see how it fares against a Bills team that is stout up front and plays a different scheme than what the offense is used to practicing against. The two practices should give the Steelers a better gauge of where they are up front.

Who are a few players on your team that the opposing club might be looking down on the roster to say, "Who is that?"

Rodak: He's been a star of "Hard Knocks," but wide receiver Chris Hogan has been rising steadily since OTAs. At 6-foot-1, Hogan is a former college lacrosse player who brings some toughness to the Bills in the slot. He's not as short and shifty as a prototypical slot man like Wes Welker, but Hogan's hands are among the surest on the team. He also has some speed and can stretch the field vertically. He's been running with the first team and should continue to be in the mix this week. On defense, I'd look out for cornerback Nickell Robey. At 5-foot-8, 165 pounds, he's the smallest player on the team but plays as tough as any defensive back on the roster. Robey went undrafted last season but won the Bills' nickel cornerback job and was part of an underrated defense led by former coordinator Mike Pettine. You might see Robey disrupt the pocket as a blitzer, but he also has a knack for being around the ball, and should make for a compelling, competitive match-up with Lance Moore in the slot.

Brown: The No. 1 player would probably have to be inside linebacker Sean Spence. It was, after all, a preseason game against the Bills almost two years ago when Spence ripped up his left knee and had to be carted off the field. His career hung in the balance in the aftermath of a devastating injury and even his own position coach, Keith Butler, later said it would be a miracle if Spence over played again. But watching Spence during his first camp since that injury you would never be able to tell he had torn several ligaments, dislocated his knee cap and sustained nerve damage. Spence has emerged as one of the storylines of camp, and the 2012 third-rounder could really help the Steelers this season. Bills coaches may also be asking about Jordan Dangerfield even though the hard-hitting safety spent training camp with Buffalo last season. Dangerfield as consistently flashed in practice, and he is among the longshots who appears to be putting themselves in position to make the 53-man roster. The separation among the contenders and pretenders as far as making the team has started this week, and the two practices against the Bills will help the Steelers’ coaches in their evaluations.

Steelers' Adams battling for No. 3 job at OT

By Scott Brown | August 13, 2014 12:00:50 PM PDT
LATROBE, Pa. -- Mike Munchak gave Mike Adams solid marks for his play in the Steelers’ first preseason game but also acknowledged that the third-year offensive tackle is in a different battle than had been expected when training camp opened.

Adams
Adams has been playing left and right tackle in camp and is vying with Guy Whimper for the job of No. 3 tackle with Kelvin Beachum and Marcus Gilbert entrenched as the starters.

“They’re obviously competing for the swing spot right now right now with the two (starting tackles) playing as well as they are right now,” said Munchak, the Steelers’ first-year offensive line coach. “We’ll just kind of see what happens.”

The question moving forward is whether the two are battling for a roster spot after Adams entered camp hoping to challenge Beachum or Gilbert for a starting job.

Munchak will lobby for the Steelers to keep nine offensive linemen on their 53-man roster, but they might only go with eight as they did last season. Given some of the other positions where the Steelers are deep, such as inside linebacker, they might keep an extra player there rather than at offensive line, where the five starters are already set, barring injury.

Cody Wallace is probably a lock for one of the three guaranteed reserve spots up front as the swing interior lineman. And rookie Wesley Johnson probably makes the 53-man roster if the the fifth-round draft pick plays well in the final three preseason games because of his versatility and standing as a player the Steelers can develop.

If that leaves Adams and Whimper battling for a final spot, Adams clearly has the edge even though he has struggled in camp. The 6-7, 323-pounder simply has too much potential, and the Steelers aren’t going to give up on a second-round draft pick after just two seasons unless Whimper clearly outplays him.

That didn’t happen in the Steelers’ 20-16 loss to the New York Giants last Saturday night.

Both played extensively with Adams logging a team-high 51 snaps and Whimper playing 43 snaps. Adams received high marks from Pro Football Focus and Munchak said he did well after some early technique issues.

“The more he played the better he played,” Munchak said of Adams. “I thought it was a good, solid start for him. He’ll continue to get better at what we’re doing.”

[. The Bills, as we all know by now, traded their 2015 first-round pick to move up for Sammy Watkins, who has been everything as advertised so far. Watkins has been Manuel's best friend on the practice field, snagging everything thrown his way and stretching the defense vertically. How ironic, considering Bryants first preseason game,, and everyone feeling that he is "so Raw".

Just found out I'm going to the final practice tomorrow and bonus, the Bills will be there too. Didn't think I would make it to camp this year but surprise surprise I was asked to go.

So Sammy Watkins got all the few principles?

Wasn't Sammy Watkins the primary receiver over Bryant? I assume he got several more targets, played against opponents #1 defender, started more games, etc. If so, I would imagine quite a bit of impact on his skills over Bryant.
