twitter updates from camp

Plus the less players you can keep because someone can play more then one spot means you can keep more numbers at positions we do have more talent like LB.

Hope this is not the case...you don't want to have an issue with a long snapper.

Greg Warren could have significant leg injury.

Steelers Camp Report: Day 14

By Scott Brown | August 13, 2014 7:35:21 PM PDT
LATROBE, Pa. -- A daily review of the hot topics coming out of Pittsburgh Steelers training camp:

As Mike Tomlin walked past a cluster of reporters during the Bills-Steelers joint practice Wednesday, the eighth-year coach made a comment about the media wanting to see a fight. "You guys are worse than ambulance chasers," Tomlin said with a laugh but also a bit of an edge. It later became apparent why he made the caustic observation. Tomlin is sensitive to the negative media attention generated by the brawl that broke out Tuesday between the Oakland Raiders and Dallas Cowboys during a joint practice. That is why he was so pleased that there were only a couple of minor incidents in the first of two joint practices between the Steelers and the Bills. "I thought it was great etiquette. I appreciate the restraint and professionalism by both teams," Tomlin said. "That doesn't get reported often enough. We look to turn on the TV and see gory, unfortunate incidents happen [like] between Dallas and Oakland. We're here to prove teams are capable of doing it in a productive and professional manner."
The Steelers may have suffered their first significant loss at training camp. Veteran long snapper Greg Warren sustained a leg injury that Tomlin said may be serious. The Steelers will know more about his status Thursday, Tomlin said. Warren joins quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, tight end Heath Miller, safety Troy Polamalu and cornerback Ike Taylor as the only players on the Steelers who were on the Super Bowl-winning teams in 2005 and 2008. Bryce Davis is the only other long snapper in camp, and he also plays tight end.
Fullback Will Johnson and safety Will Allen each left practice with hamstring issues though Tomlin said neither is serious. Linebacker Vince Williams did not practice because of a concussion and left guard Ramon Foster watched drills with his left knee wrapped. Foster left practice early Tuesday with swelling in his knee. Also not practicing were outside linebacker Jarvis Jones, linebacker Jordan Zumwalt and tight end Matt Spaeth.
Wide receiver Derek Moye made one of the plays of the day when he caught a back-shoulder pass against Bills starting cornerback Stephon Gilmore. The grab came in one-on-one drills and Moye outfought Gilmore, a former No. 1 draft pick, for the ball.
Some personnel notes: Cody Wallace played left guard with the first-team offense with Foster out. Mike Adams played both right and left tackle. Chris Carter played right outside linebacker with the first-team defense with Jarvis Jones out and Markus Wheaton and Dri Archer returned punts.
The Steelers' ground game struggled as none of their backs found much running room. Archer was swallowed up by a host of Bills defenders on several outside runs. Josh Harris caught Tomlin's wrath after one run with Tomlin barking at him to hit the hole harder.
The Steelers added another running back to their roster when they signed rookie Stephen Houston. The 6-0, 225-pounder had been with the New England Patriots until getting released earlier this week. Houston rushed for 2,304 yards and 25 touchdown in three seasons at Indiana.
The Steelers finish camp Thursday with another joint practice with the Bills. It starts at 5:30 p.m. ET and it will be the last chance for fans to watch practice. The Steelers break camp Friday and play the Bills on Saturday night at Heinz Field.

No matter who we hire, who the coach is, or who the offensive line throws out there, we struggle to run block.

It's the ******* "Curse of Tomlin". Something just isn't right.

every offense is struggling right now.. I feel your frustration,, but im optimistic... it HAS to get better..

Rushing efficiency as measured by Football Outsiders and adjusted for defenses faced (since Tomlin's arrival):

2007: -4.1% (20th)
2008: +0.5% (15th)
2009: -2.9% (16th)
2010: -2.3% (14th)
2011: +6.6% (6th)
2012: -18.1% (31st)
2013: -14.9% (29th)

To say "it HAS to get better" is the understatement of all understatements. It's kind of embarrassing really. We have a franchise quarterback, weapons all around him and yet we can't line up and do a running play with any ******* consistency. We've tried two O.C.'s. On our 4th offensive line coach and yet I'm supposed to have "optimism".

I'm tired of the excuses. You have the horses to get it done so get it done. Frustrated isn't even the start of it....

The team reflects the con man head coach, fat, sloppy with no attention to detail

Man, Cowher's players sucked ***....

I thought I read the starters played the running game well against the giants?

Turn the record over, this side is broken.

Thtat's how I feel about the soft, poor;ly coached team the Steelers have become under the idiot. Every year he talks about getting better in the running game and every year we suck at running. He has no commitment to anything other than acting cool and playing the fool. We are now a mediocre team with little chance of becoming elite as Ben's career winds down, sad he wasted much of his career with an inept coach

Don't you know that you can only use the "Cowher's players" line when you are pointing out something "GOOD" that happened during Tomlin's time here? As in "We went to two Super Bowls and won one ....... with "Cowher's players."

I'm easily confused.

Quoted just because.

Of course Cowher's players were 8-8 in his last season. /devil's advocate

How ironic, considering Bryants first preseason game,, and everyone feeling that he is "so Raw".

This always baffles me as well. He spent 3 years as a WR at an ACC school. Its not like he just went from Punter to Linebacker.

Wasn't Sammy Watkins the primary receiver over Bryant? I assume he got several more targets, played against opponents #1 defender, started more games, etc. If so, I would imagine quite a bit of impact on his skills over Bryant.

Watkins WAS the clemson offense. He was a three year starter, and a big time recruit as well.
Watkins committed to Clemson in November 2010. He was also recruited by Florida State, Florida, and Miami but decided to go to a school outside Florida.

Despite not taking part in spring practice, Watkins made an immediate impact for Clemson in his freshman season in 2011. He caught 82 passes for 1219 yards and 12 touchdowns in his first collegial season, including 10 catches, 155 yards and two TDs against defending national champions Auburn. He led the nation in reception yards per game, all-purpose yards and touchdowns. He also broke 11 school freshman records seven games into the season, including total all-purpose yards previously held by C. J. Spiller. He was an AP first-team All-American, becoming only the fourth ever true freshman to do so, joining Herschel Walker, Marshall Faulk and Adrian Peterson. He was also named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America.

As a sophomore in 2012 he had 57 receptions for 708 yards and three touchdowns. As a junior he had 101 receptions for 1,464 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was the MVP of the 2014 Orange Bowl after setting an Orange Bowl record with 16 receptions for 227 yards. He also set the school record for career receptions in the game finishing with 240.

In January 2014, Watkins announced that he would forgo his senior season and enter the 2014 NFL Draft

Now compare that to Martavis Bryant:

Bryant attended Clemson University from 2011 to 2013. During his career, he had 61 receptions for 1,354 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Bryant announced on January 5, 2014 that he would forgo his senior season and enter the 2014 NFL Draft.

Bryant's career stats are not even close to Watkins freshman stats. He is incredibly raw. Playing WR in college isn't the same as playing in the NFL. In the ACC Bryant didn't face a lot of top notch talent, especially as the #2 WR, and that was only for one year. He was able to use his size and speed to beat defenders, he is now learning how hard he has to work in the NFL. As I said before, if he was a finished product, or even a MORE finished product than what he currently is, he wouldn't have been drafted in the fourth round.

Thanks insanity for shining some light on this.

Ok hes not as good as Watkins.. but what was he doing for three years down there at a major school where Watkins was polishing his skills.? Maybe he was the field stretcher for Watkins.. ? I don't know.

Besides Watkins, Clemson has had other great WRs. DeAndre Hopkins was drafted #27 overall by the Texans in 2013.

He was behind two first rounders and he also was somewhat immature. Go back and look at some of the articles written about Bryant after the draft if you want more detail.

Howard Jones from all reports is kicking butt. I hope they don't try to sneak him onto the PS. My guess he is signed by the Pats or Bungles a few hours after we cut him if they try that crap.
