Now we know why there has been no progress between the Pittsburgh Steelers and linebacker Jason Worilds on a new contract.

Worilds rejected a long-term offer from the Steelers "awhile ago," Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh shall we not name paper reported last week.

There is no word on the specifics of the offer. Per Bouchette, the offer stands and the team will go no higher.

Worilds recently expressed optimism that he will reach agreement with the Steelers.

"You put so much time and effort in with these guys," Worilds explained, per The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, "so you want to be here for the duration of your career."

The two sides have until July 15 to work out an extension.

If the Steelers stick to their hard-line stance, Worilds will have to accept their standing offer or play out the season under the $9.754 million transition tag.

In the latest edition of the "Around The League Podcast," the heroes talk "Hard" before delving into a new batch of rookie whispers

If he is seeking the market value which is roughly what his tag is which guys like Avril are making 10 mill a year, we are going to have some questions can we offer him 50 mill 10 mill SB and still have cash to offer Heyward 6 years 40-45 mill 6 mill sb and then big ben a max deal.
If we cannot come to a agreement by the 16th olb will interfere with draft plans to load up on DB's.
Zummwalt was just a run stopping olb at cal, if by chance worlids leaves and spence does well in camp @ the pre season, could Shazier kick out to lolb?

At this point I make him play out the season if he blows up franchise him if he sizzles or just does "ok" let him get overpaid elsewhere.

Worilds and his agent are overvaluing his abilities. He has only proven himself worthy of a premium contract for half a season. The front office is correct by not submitting to his demands. Let him play this year...if he can. He already pussed out of ota`s. Not the attribute of someone wanting top buck.

"You put so much time and effort in with these guys,"

So much effort for an impressive HALF a season.

Screw this guy. He and his agent think he is amazing.

I stated in another thread that, considering his injury history, Worilds ought to jump on a long-term contract.

However, even if he only puts in another half-season as a starter and can accumulate 8 sacks again, someone will pay him. That is just the way it works out.

It would be nice to know what the numbers he turned down are, though.

we made the mistake of giving Woodley market value but we had no choice at that time our 34 was rock solid, no one could predict deebo's injuries.
Hampton was still awesome, Woodley was consistent and looked like he would be a 10 sack olb each year, him smoking to much weed and developing a lazy work ethic and coming into camp over weight every year and has broken down each of the past 3 years b/c his thin calves cant hold him when he is 270, when he should be 260.
Hopefully Worlids can take a hometown discount at like 5 38-44 mil.

if that's how he wants to play it then franchise his *** next year if he excels

if that's how he wants to play it then franchise his *** next year if he excels

And he'll laugh all the way to the bank.

I guarantee the guarantees the Steelers are offering is less than $22 million in the first two seasons, yet that is exactly what he's going to get by being tough at the table. AND he gets to hit free agency at age 28 after pocketing that $22 million.

Didn't we go through all this with Max Starks? Didn't Tombert figure this out before?

yep. the smarter and safer move for him is to come down and meet the Steelers halfway between what they're offering and what he over-values himself. ****, we all know athletes over-value themselves. If he blows out an ACL at any time, his perceived pay day after this season is gone.

didn't know the tag was that big. But anything less that 9 per year he will reject, and that's just too much to commit long term

I suspect he will not be here next year. He is already injured this year. He maybe an individual that has lots of drive and is working his body up to the breaking point. Someone posted some plays about Jarvis and it really showed worilds looking good on them. It might be that worilds has just gone past his point of maintaining durability. I hope he works out this year but do not want us to overpay for him. If he wants to be paid well he may have to go to anther team.

But this would only transpire if he balls out next year, and is justifiably worth it...

The trouble that many of us have with Worilds and a long term contract is his ability to sustain his play for a full season. If he does just that next year, I wouldnt be that distraught tagging him again...

He DOESN'T have to play balls out next year. We just tagged him coming off playing only 72% of defensive snaps, getting 8 sacks and having (at least in theory) the option of keeping an overpriced Woodley instead.

If we tagged him $9.75 million based on those circumstances, how "balls out" do you really think he needs to play to get the tag again next year when we have no one else on the roster than can play LOLB?

IMO, we just rent his *** this year, and draft an OLB next year.
sign some vet to hold it down for a year or two like we normally used to do.

If they don't work out long-term deal this offseason then you can fully expect him to be franchised regardless. As Del just said, he doesn't need to have an All-Pro season. The Steelers have nothing at outside linebacker waiting in the wings unless one of the rookies shines. It was one of the reasons I was hoping for one in the second or third round, to develop for a year then allow Worilds to walk. They will be in the same situation next year, Worlds tagged at a huge cost and will be forced to draft one early.

I swear I can see Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert sitting around a room going....

"We'll show him who's boss. We won't pay him $20 million guaranteed. Let's franchise tag him two years in a row instead. That 'ill show him. Kevin, you're a genius. No Mike, I'm just glad you made me into a hard ***."

I have a feeling if 20 million would get him to sign he'd be signed. I have a feeling he wants 28-30 upfront and for a guy that had a few good games last year and is always hurt... HELL NO!

No player would sign anything right now. Nothing is going to happen until training camp at least.

I get what you are saying.

But whose to say what happens during the year? During this Free Agency period, Worilds was one of the more coveted OLB's, but what happens if some no name OLB's emerge during the 2014 season and then hit FA? What if someone on our roster shows that they can be at least competent at playing OLB (Carter, im looking at you)? What if the draft class has an abundance of high potential OLB's?

It appears that Worilds has the FO over a barrel- but a lot can happen in a year.

In looking down the list I saw our long snapper listed as a linebacker, but i did see one guy we might like if for no other reason than he would be coming from the jets and Farrior turned out pretty good. LB Tim Fugger UFA New York Jets Free Agent and we can all yell put that Fugger in!

What if he sucks and doesn't produce anywhere near what he did in half a year last year? Who looks stupid then? Him and his agent.

When you pay players based on what you have on your team or what available in the free agent market you set yourself back and hurt yourself going forward. I don't care who you have you don't pay the Jason worilds of the world big money or you become the Oakland raiders

I'm not sure if you are being facetious or if you really think this.

However, I think we can assume the franchise tag this year and next year should be close to your $22 million total prediction.

For the second franchise tag (or, maybe more, for the contract he signs), the FO ought to attach some kind of probability to it and, from there it is a simple Expected Value problem. The probablility that he earns that payday or franchise tag is 1. I don't think it is very low, though, there is some probability that he is injured and gets nothing.

The point is, for the FO, there is some risk involved and they are, surely, taking that into account. There is risk involved for Worilds, too, and he is banking on nothing bad happening.
