Coordinators Thread

DK himself isn’t bottom a 1/3 WR, but IMO collectively the offensive skill position players are bottom 1/3.

DK isn’t a complete WR who runs a full route tree, the other receivers are absolutely putrid.

Gainwell is a good 3rd back, Warren is a below average RB1, Rodgers was at the bottom of the league in many measurable, the TE group has had a pittance of yards and catches for years now.

Maybe they are better in McCarthys scheme but how many them start on the majority of other rosters other than DK and maybe Muth?
You could practically use Gainwell as a slot receiver. His size and hands, speed and vision are what you want as a slot.

If they're really spending more on the staff, it's about time.

The Steelers were at an increasing disadvantage from a game planning and preparation standpoint every year other teams' staffs grew while theirs stayed the same.

That’s why smart teams add some young inexperienced guys willing to work those 100 hour weeks to start climbing a ladder.

Those young bucks will work for peanuts and run through a wall to get their break…at least the ones with potential do

When building a management team its always beneficial to achieve long term success to have a good mix of very experienced and lesser experienced employees..
In fact, in my experience, most management/leadership teams fail when the make-up of the group is heavy one side or the other.

Also...I been reading on this board that alot of people keep talking about young talent to fill the open positions, including the head coach.
Just remember, sometimes new shiny bright objects tend to flame out quickly if not guided properly..

I'm in favor of the current leadership team build for the Steelers, and the appropriate mix of experience, especially if they can get Tolien to jump ship from New Orleans for the OC role.

I don't really know that much about Graham. Is this a good hire.? Will he be able to utilize most of the people we have on defense now?
I don't really think we arebthat far away on defense. Just need a different scheme that opponents have notnseen 100 times over the last 30 years

We’ve lacked young innovative minds (and voices that could be heard at the table for a long time).

Spot on…You must have experience, but need youthful exuberance too…a great team is all about achieving that right mix where everyone raises each other’s abilities.

When one voice is the only voice heard their is a huge problem.

Tolzien has been the top rumored name for at least a week now and many have been saying it just needs to become official. However, this is the first actual report. DB was the first to break the news on Graham as well.

Scott is easily my favorite hire. Out of everyone…

We've finally hired a rising OC.

During his playing days, was on a roster with Alex Smith, Aaron Rodgers, and Andrew Luck. Five years under McCarthy in Dallas (two as QB coach) and one under Kellen Moore/Doug Nussmeier. McCarthy's time in Dallas showed he likes experienced DCs and hires rising OCs.

We’ve become Mike McCarthy’s alumni group. Guess what team Scott played for from 2013-2015,and who the coach was? And then guess who hired him for his first coaching gig when he was done playing with no coaching experience whatsoever?

Not only was Mike McCarthy ecstatic to become the head of the Steelers, all his buddies were quite pleased as well.

Scott has never called an offensive play in college or the NFL.

He won’t be for the Steelers either.

I think he called the plays at the seniorbowl but I might be incorrect..

I don’t see how he called the plays. Below is his only college coaching experience. And then Mike snapped him up to be with him in Dallas.

The Wisconsin Badgers hired Tolzien as an analyst to work on scouting opponents in 2019.

And he won't do it with the Steelers since M&M has already said he will be calling the plays.

Baltimore just hired Declan Doyle as OC and he's never called plays. He'll actually have to under Minter.

American Team (won 17–9)

  • Head Coach: Joel Thomas (New Orleans Saints associate head coach / running backs coach)
  • Offensive Coordinator / Play-calling: Scott Tolzien (Saints quarterbacks coach) — he was functioning as the offense lead and play-caller for the American Team.
  • Defensive Coordinator: Peter Sirmon (Saints linebackers coach) — led the defensive coaching for the American Team.
