2015 Pirates thread

This game is why Umps should lose the privilege of calling strikes and balls... they are whiny ******* who hold grudges and are inconsistent at best

They made defensive replacements in the top of the 7th. I was hoping they would have replaced Alvarez at 1st with a bucket attached to a pole.

Good thing they have instant replay in baseball :sour:

They will pull him after his next at bat this inning...

A bucket and a pole would have not been able nail that HR but lets go ahead and get the bucket in next inning. :)

Yep. I sometimes feel sorry for the guy and hope that one day his glove starts to work. It's hard not to pull for the guy because he does have a strong bat. Plus he seems like a good guy who at least acts humble and you can't have enough of those guys in the present day of sports. He would be a great DH.

Kang!

Oh, Bastardo. Quit hanging them in the strike zone.

Bastardo blows.

Raise it. Cards down 1-0 in AZ in the 2nd

For all of Pedro's errors, I can't recall any that cost us a game. Actually I can't recall us losing many games in regard to anyone's errors.
Our losses generally come when the bats are silent.

It looks like we will be playing a one game playoff. That stinks. Why isn't at least a 3 game series? We have a better record than most first place teams, and to think our fate lies on one stinking game after a fantastic season is disturbing.

4 1/2 back of the Cards and we play them 6 times. Control our own destiny.

and the Cubs and Assbirds have a few series too...it's mathematically still wide open.

but man, it seems like St.Louis just won't lose sometimes.

They play 162 games, virtually all three-game series and then the playoffs come down to a single game? Stupid setup.

Let me explain exactly how preposterous this current scenario is for the Pirates.

The pirates are currently winning at a .611 clip.
They are third overall in the entirety of MLB, a mere half game behind the team with the second place record, the Kansas City Royals.
They are, however mired behind the Cardinals in their own division. That gets them a wild card game regardless of how well they do in comparison to the rest of the league.
If they were to finish with that .611 win %, which is a 98 or 99 win season, they would be in some fairly elite company. In the past ten seasons 2005 to 2014 only 8 teams finished at .600 or better. In 4 of those seasons, no team finished at .600 or better at all.
During that timeframe, that .611 mark would be the 5th best record overall. Only the 2005 Cardinals (.617), 08 Angels(.617), 09 Yankees (.636), and 11 Nationals (.630) would be better.
Only twice in that period were there 2 teams with a .600 record or better, and in both cases one was from the American league and the other the National league.
You actually have to go back 11 seasons to 04 in order to find a comparable season, where 3 teams had over .600 winning percentages. Two of those were from the same division as well, the Yankees and red Sox, however neither of those two teams had the best winning percentage that year. That went to the Cardinals at .648, almost the same pace they are on this season.
If the Pirates do make the wild card with a .611 winning percentage, that would tie the second best record ever for any wild card team since it’s inception in 94. Only the 2001 athletics were better.
This would be the 4th time a wild card team even had a .600 or better record, and the first time a national league club did it

So basically the Pirates are a great team stuck behind a team having the best season in just over a decade.

With a couple of series left against the cardinals I am not counting out the division. Yes, I know mathematically improbable but if we can keep pace but win both series it will come down to the very end. All that matters is if you get in but I sure would feel better about home field advantage considering our record at home and the cardinals record at home.

And not helping their case, Evil Liriano shows up tonight. Siiiiiiiiiiigh.

I don't either, he's just made it so much tougher. You have to love the power, but man, the errors.

So if, IF, the Bucs get past the WC and then some how St Louis in the first round, bet the farm people. They are 0.725 against the NL East (and swept the most likely opponent the Mets 6-0) and 0.833 against the NL West so far (6-1 against SF, and 3-0 against LA so far). They are 0.650 against the AL this season also. They did drop two in KC (the most likely opponent), but played them tough in the one loss. The hard part is getting through that first round. The real key is getting home field for the WC. Thus far this season, they are 0.420 in the Central. They are 0.560 at home, and 0.280 away. That is just an ungodly split. So get that home WC and hopefully get through it.

Now comes St Louis. Surprisingly, that's the team in the Central the Bucs have played well. They're 6-7 with St Louis, but three of those losses were WO's in St Louis. They have a fighting chance, but I see the best chance as being taking one of the first two in St Louis, then finish them off in the Burgh. If it goes back to St Louis, even Cole has a tough row to hoe in that park in game 5.

So now, IF you want Cole pitching early in St Louis, who do you start in the WC? Liriano? Burnett, if he's back and healthy? Happ, maybe? You know damn well the Cubs are starting Arrieta, I don't care how much they paid Lester. But if I'm Clint, and thinking ahead, do I gamble on this must win and start some one other than Cole, knowing I have a shutdown bullpen I can get out there if they get in trouble early, to save Cole for St Louis game 1? By doing that, he could even be there for game 5 again if needed. This is why managers get paid big money, because my brain hurts considering this.

You go Cole in the WCG. You have to win that. St Louis struggles vs lefties a bit. liriano gets 2 starts if it goes that long... cole gets one. the big ? is burnett's health

What really stinks is that if things stay the same, after the wild card game, the winner gets St. Louis. Sucks for St. Louis as well. Have the best record in baseball, and as a reward, they have to play either the second, or third best team in the league, while the 4th and 5th teams play each other.

We are going to win the division.

Noooooo doubt about it.
