2016 Pirates thread

Melancon gone. Bucs throwin' in the towel? Thought they still had a chance for a Wildcard again, but apparently maybe the Bucs aren't thinkin' that way.

I don't think it's throwing in the towel since they have competent arms to get them through the rest of the season. They were able to get a couple of guys for a pitcher they were going to lose at the end of the season and are rumored to still be after a starter.

Getting pwned by the Brewers again tonight I see.

Just cant see this team making a late season run and going anywhere even if they do make the playoffs.

Sounds like a solid return for 60 days of Melancon.

Rivero had one bad inning this year but he's nearly as good as Melancon in advanced FIP type stuff. Plus he's controllable for 5 years. Hearn is a C to C+ type prospect but might break out. Could possibly be a solid reliever in a few years if he doesn't work out as a starter.

Losing Melancon is not throwing in the towel........it is good roster management.

Either way, the Pirates are still having a disappointing year.

Yep, slowly losing hope of making the wild card with each bad loss. Too bad they weren't just a little more aggressive last offseason because they could have been a strong contender once again.

another bad day in Milwaukee..

I am really starting to believe Cutch's legs are gone....permanently..

I thought he might work out of it...but he is regressing.

Has lost quickness and coverage range in the field and doesn't drive the ball any longer..

I also thought that when wasn't in the lineup yesterday...that it was a sign that a deal was eminent ,,,

Maybe not

Swept by the Brewers once again. If it were not for the Pirates, Brewers fans might not have much to look forward to every year.

Did these guys mail it in because of the trade? Yikes, let's get it together!

Pirates acquired (per team's Twitter account):
Ivan Nova from Yankees for 2 PTBNL
Antonio Bastardo from Mets for Jonathan Niese

Per Robert Murray, Jon Heyman and Buster Olney:
Drew Hutchison from Blue Jays for Francisco Liriano and Harold Ramierz (AA OF)

I hate Bastardo but other then that I like the moves. Shed 7 million for next year too .

Horrible. Complete different mind set compared to last year

Update to the Toronto deal:

Drew Hutchinson for Francisco Liriano, Harold Ramirez AND Reese McGuire

The pirates got shafted by the wild card rule the last couple years and did not do much to improve their standing in the off season. They do not have the bats to compete yet and while the pitching maybe great in a couple years it is too young right now. Couple that with terrible relief pitching and we have where this season is going. Hopefully they go on a tear, but I feel they may be going the wrong way...

Ramirez was gonna play where?

and McGuire hasn't shown much ability to hit consistently.

dumping Liriano and his paycheck was worth the price, even if it looks a bit steep on paper.

Nova has had a good month....and Bastardo did better under Uncle Ray than anywhere.

and they managed to keep Freese, Joyce, and the kids that might actually play in PNC someday.

maybe they can straighten out hutchison? He had 3.128 time entering the season, so assuming he can stay down for a bit that will leave him short of 4 years meaning we can have him for 17/18/19 as long as he's worth tendering. He'll cost something like 2.7-3.2M next year.

Basically, they dumped some expensive crappy pitchers for some cheap crappy pitchers.

I wanted to give myself a night to sleep on this. I can get making moves, but in terms of the short- and long-term vision of these trades, what exactly were the Pirates going for? There just seems to be a lack of direction in these moves and am looking to be enlightened. If it was strictly to save cash so they can actually make some moves in the offseason, okay.

You can look at these moves as the equivalent of freeing up cap space in football. We won't know the result,
until we see what free agents they sign in the offseason. At the minimum they need a quality starting pitcher
on a 3 to 4 year contract.
